As always we look to history to tell us something about our present.
Yiddishkayt is proud to host Lithuanian author and journalist Rūta Vanagaitė to speak about her controversial best-seller Mūsiškiai (Our People: Journey with an Enemy), co-authored with world-famous Holocaust historian Dr. Efraim Zuroff.
Together Vanagaitė and Zuroff visited the sites of mass murder in Lithuania and Belarus and interviewed eyewitnesses to the Nazi genocide, revealing the complicity of Lithuanians during the Holocaust — including Vanagaitė’s own relatives — and the efforts of all Lithuanian governments since independence to suppress information about the role played by local Nazi collaborators.

Confronting the hostility her work has caused (as profiled by Masha Gessen in The New Yorker), Vanagaitė continues to campaign for truth and justice. In appearances and speeches all over the world, she shares her efforts to break the silence, the enormous controversy her work has stirred, and the search for truth that she has inspired around the world. Vanagaitė will discuss the findings of her work and explain their ramifications in the broader context of historical memory debates taking place throughout the world today.
