November First Friday (2 Nov) - The Forgotten Flotilla
Dr Michael James Bendon has recently completed research around two British WWII wrecks of tank landing craft (TLCs) located off shore from the ancient Phalasarna site in Crete.
While participating with Dr Elpida Hadjidaki in the excavation of the Hellenistic harbour city of Phalasarna in western Crete in 2008, Michael took a lunchtime snorkelling break and became interested in what looked like a World War Two wreck. It sits in the entrance to the harbour of the ancient city in only a few metres of water. Over the years, with the help of many friends and associates in Crete and England, the story of the wrecks has become clearer and the research far wider. The wrecks turned out to be Tank Landing Craft Mk1, which were prototype vessels developed by the British and first deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean in 1941. Despite the crucial support these craft provided in the Mediterranean campaigns, nobody seemed to quite know what became of them. They were The Forgotten Flotilla.
We are lucky to have Dr Bendon talk about the discovery at the November First Friday. You can read about the Forgotten Flotilla here

Short Coastal/Estuary Cruise to Maitland Bay (3-4 Nov)
Maitland Bay is one of the forgotten destinations just across Broken Bay from Barrenjoey.
If the weather is not suitable for Maitland Bay and alternative destination will be made . The final details will be available on Wednesday 3rd Nov and will be on Facebook or contact reception or Leon on Nirvanas Kitchen. On the day monitor Channel 77.
Useless trivia, Maitland Bay was previously named Boat Harbour but was renamed Maitland Bay after the Paddle Steamer PS Maitland. On Thursday, May 5 1989, it was on its routine run from Sydney to Newcastle loaded with cargo and 34 passengers when it ran into a southerly gale stirring up mountainous seas. Captain Richard James Skinner, from London, tried to turn the vessel into Broken Bay but the Maitland drifted helplessly and was flung aground at Boat Harbour, later renamed Maitland Bay, about 5am the next morning. The vessel struck bow first, then swung around until it was split into two sections 60 metres from the headland.
