Letter from the Outgoing President
UXPA International
Where did the year go? 2018 flew by so fast! I am excited for 2019 - UXPA International has some amazing things in store for you. But first, let me recap 2018.
My mission, as the UXPA International President, has been to bring more resources to UX practitioners. Well, I am proud to say we have done exactly that.
Our Education program continues to be a great success. In 2018, we had 10 webinars, 4 short courses, and we introduced a new initiative, the Experts Panel. Jana took our education program to a new level this year by getting all previous webinars up onto our YouTube channel.
Our Publications team excelled this year, publishing 5 issues of User Experience Magazine and 4 issues of the Journal of Usability Studies. Claudia led efforts to index the journal in the Web of Science Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCU), a major step for academic usability researchers. Journals accepted for coverage in ESCI must be peer reviewed, follow ethical publishing practices, meet technical requirements, have English language bibliographic information, and be recommended or requested by a scholarly audience of Web of Science users. This is an accomplishment that took tremendous effort, and we are proud to have our journal indexed.
And let’s not forget about our conference in Puerto Rico...

Editorial: Is the Report of the Death of the Construct of Usability an Exaggeration?
In 2018, Noam Tractinsky published a provocative paper entitled, “The usability construct: A dead end?” He argued the following:
- Usability is an umbrella concept.
- There is a mismatch between the construct of usability and its empirical measurements.
- Scientific progress requires unbundling the usability construct and replacing it with well-defined constructs.

Explore Places Made of Atoms, Design Places Made of Bits
UXPA Michigan Chapter Event
Want to run a different chapter event? Our Michigan chapter recently conducted a half-day "Architecture Walk & Experience Design Tour" in partnership with the Detroit Opera House and the Detroit Month of Design. After a sumptuous lunch at the legendary Cadillac Cafe, one group of participants went on a 2.5-hour walking tour of downtown Detroit, led by Dan Klyn, an information architect whose research focus is applying built-environment architecture theory and practice to what we do in digital. A second group toured the Detroit Opera House to learn its history and discuss how lighting, costumes, and sets are designed to create a performance experience and explore how this relates to experience design. Afterward, both groups came together for a directed discussion to apply some of the observations and conversations to their daily design work.
