Ever Had An Internship That Changed Your Life?

Ask Falmouth, Maine native Maddy Adams('21) about her internship at the Carter Lab and she'll be honest about how the experience motivated her to compete in the fight against cancer.

"I have had people close to me impacted by cancer, but my motivation behind competing in the Tri for a Cure triathlon was more based on my internship last summer. Last summer, I had the incredible opportunity of working in the Carter Lab at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine on a research project related to cancer.

The experience gave me a new perspective on just how crucial and impactful funding and donations are for any type of research - research truly can sink or soar depending on funding."

What's really outstanding about Maddy is not only her guts to compete against 1,300 other women but also her wisdom to remain focused on making an impact for others.

"Yes, the race is competitive, but at the same time nobody loses sight of the reason we’re all competing. I believe cancer touches everyone in some way and raising money for fantastic organizations such as the Maine Cancer Foundation is what continues to bring us closer to a cure."

Congrats Maddy. Keep going!

Ever Slept Through Your Alarm!?

Like that startled and bewildered feeling you try to shake off after oversleeping, the moment you realize you wasted hours attempting to study can be tough. Ask Maryland native Quentin Thomas('21) about a wake up call from his mother and he'll be honest about how it changed everything.

"My first semester, I was studying for a midterm in the Rock for countless hours. When the alarm sounded at around 2am, telling me I had to leave, I realized I had not studied a thing. It’s like I had the largest mental block at the worst time possible. This was my first truly tough moment at Brown. Thankfully, I called my mom and she actually answered despite how late it was. She gave me some advice (to go to sleep) and that it’d be fine."

The expression of "work smarter not harder" is one that most of us have heard before. Whats awesome about Quentin's experience is not merely the common reminder but the lasting impact that fuels him to look outside himself.

"It was pretty basic advice, but I took it, and I made it through. Moments like these make me want to encourage people to push through even when it seems useless. At that point in the evening, I had given up and just accepted defeat. But, thanks to my mom, I managed to get through it. And I’m still here!"

Congrats Quentin. Keep Going!
