Race 2 Summer Consistency
It was a busy 2 weeks for us. Race 2 for the summer consistency went ahead successfully despite the threat of distant rain clouds. With winds progressing to about 18-20 knots at the end of the 3rd race, many of the green fleet retired after the 1st race. Kudos to the new kids, its not easy starting out when its raining and choppy!

Discover Sailing
We had not much luck weather wise for Discovery Sailing, 21st October. Rain and wind >30knts lead to the club cancelling all on water activities. However, we set up a few boats in the Marina Hall for visitors to have a look. Thank you to the volunteers who still made it to the club to assist our Captains in promoting sailing.

A new date has been established for Discover DINGHY Sailing, and this will be on the 10th November 2018, Saturday. Invitation and promotions has gone out for an 830am start. Organisation of this event will be sent out to volunteers early next week. If you are an active member of the dinghy section, please log into your team app and RSVP the event request so the Captains are able to allocate appropriate jobs to all.

Race #3 will go ahead but with a new start time of 11am. Please refer your Team App for details of the race. All support boats will be launched on Friday to allow the ramp to be clear for launching of Pacers and Oppies for Discover Sailing Program. Some assistance will be required on Friday as well.

We are hoping for healthy numbers to come through our gates, try out our dinghies and feast on our cakes! Those who have kindly offered to bake, Thank You! The more cakes the merrier!

Coaches Corner

FITNESS  The past month has involved working on fitness levels. We have been starting to test fitness levels on a regular timing. For some of our sailors we can identify a steady improvement in fitness levels. For the rest we need to double the intensity to achieve the next level. Now that the season has started a daily fitness program is suggested.

PAUL ELDRED OPTIMIST COACHING Paul is joining us on Thursday to share his knowledge on how to sail an Optimist faster. His One Sails have won the last 2 world Championships. Training this week will be dedicated to preparation and set up. We look forward to seeing all of the Optimist family here at Training on Thursday 4.15pm. Those going to Nationals will be rigging their sails.

FREMANTLE REGATTA This was conducted last weekend on 2 courses. The biggest fleet was the Optimist silver fleet with 19 boats. HYC was represented by a keen and enthusiastic group of sailors and parents. Well done.

WHAT DID WE LEARN FROM FREMANTLE. One of the start boats was a yacht and many of our sailors sailed straight part not recognising the flag staff. Many regattas around the world use yachts. Keep a look out. WIND. Yes we need to watch where the wind is coming from. It was interesting where the pressure did come from, this is unlike the river. In the first Optimist Silver race several of the lead boats headed around mark 3 to the start line instead of the finish line. Again keep a good look out. Maxime gained 6 places for a second place.

SIMPLY GO SAILING. The more time we can sail the better. The Nationals team will be training on Fridays 4.15-6.15 to achieve this.

NEXT REGATTA RFBYC ICR November 24/25 make sure you have booked.

Happy Sailing!

Learning Nuggets

FIVE things of everything! With Discover Sailing (Dinghy) just round the corner (again), I thought I would gather 5 things of things that I find useful and interesting about 'Sailing' for kids and as an adult!

5 things why all kids need to sail:
1. Balance - I am not talking about balancing on the beam, its balancing working on computers, books, school and indoors. Sailing keeps them in touch with nature!
2. Work Ethic - Sailing is such a great way to teach work/reward lessons in an instantaneous way. There is hard physical work to be had while sailing but it is a work that is gratifying and immediately shows its purpose, which is what short-attention-span kids can use.
3. Friendships - With electronic communication dominating the worlds of young people, the possibilities of true friendships are thinning. It’s become a cliché that kids are always “in their screens,” but it is true. Sailing encourages camaraderie and a sense of belonging.
4. System - This world is full of systems and seeing one as masterfully designed as a sailboat is valuable.
5. Adventure! - Instilling a sense of adventure in a young person is an important seed to plant. Sailboats are safe, but they are also a ticket to the wild unknown. Every kid who’s ever sailed into an empty horizon has looked out and thought, “What if we kept going? Where would we end up?”

5 things I learned when I started sailing as an adult:
1. Sailing is more doable than you think! It may sound intimidating at first but a good instructor will break it down into bite size information. Don't expect to learn everything in one session, or even a season but if you enjoy it, keep at it!
2. Sailing is more inclusive than you think. I have seen many different sizes, ages and from all different backgrounds. And taking up a course with other newbies puts everyone on an even playing field. Fantastic way to reboot your social life!
3. Sail lingo and jargon is very confusing. But you will learn the lingo pretty quickly when the Skipper yells at you during a race to give him the sheet and you give him the closest piece of paper and he isn't amused! Its important to learn the lingo!
4. Using the right clothes and more! Layers are good and getting prepared for the right gear for the variable weather is important. Be as comfortable as possible and here in WA, plenty of sun protection. I also learnt that comfortable safety gear is crucial, investing in a comfortable PFD will make it more likely for you to not mind wearing it. And when you are sailing, even if you know how to swim, falling off a boat usually means its unintended and you may be injured.
5. Keep track of your water time. Take note of everything in your logbook the day of. You don’t want to forget important details later on. I use a phone app to keep track on my water time and routes. Its amazing to look back at how far you've come from the first log entry!

Happy reading and keep on sailing!
