In this issue of MediaDev Insider, we focus on the topic of women in media. Many of the highlights are from our members who are part of GFMD's Women in Media working group. Since it was established  earlier this year, the group has met five times to discuss campaigns and projects, coordinate action, and share resources and expertise. Membership in GFMD's working groups is open to any of our organisational members, and we encourage you to contact us if you are interested in joining.

Showcasing the Gender and Diversity Work of Our Members

The members of GFMD’s Women in Media working group have joined forces to organise an event on the sidelines of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) that will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in March 2019. This is just one outcome of the regular exchange of GFMD members who connect, share knowledge and experiences, and develop joint activities with the facilitation of the GFMD secretariat.

GFMD Resource Centre Features Women and Diversity Section

When we relaunched our new website in August, one of the new, key features we were (and still are) the most excited about was a dedicated Resource Centre, which unites similar resources under a theme related to our working groups and projects. The Gender and Diversity page of our Resource Centre collects research, reports, and other publications, along with fellowships, grants, and member initiatives to keep you informed. Please send us your resources and updates so we can add them to the page!

At the core of Fondation Hirondelle's work is using media to reduce obstacles that may prevent women’s voices from being heard while also empowering young female journalists. When the trolls are high-level public officials degrading certain individuals in The Telegraph, though, pushback should be expected. This is exactly what the Media Diversity Institute (MDI), the leading partner in the Get the Trolls Out project, has done to uphold media ethics in the U.K., and challenge the former foreign secretary, Boris Johnson. Read more about their advocacy here.
