ECU Acting COO & longtime Pirates leader Workman announces he'll retire at the end of the calendar year. Workman has spent 34 years in Greenville, "It is time for me to turn the page to a new chapter in my professional life and look forward to seeing what doors open in the future. While I am retiring as a staff member, we will always be ECU Pirate fans." (link); With Workman off the list, 247 Sports' Igoe takes a look at who he thinks could be in the mix for the open AD chair at ECU. Igoe goes with Eastern Michigan AD Wetherbee, Charleston Southern AD Barber, UNC Wilmington's Bass, former UW-Milwaukee AD Koonce, UT Chattanooga boss Wharton, Clemson Deputy AD Neff, Appalachian State's Gillin, TCU Deputy AD for Internal Affairs Sinquefield, Georgia Deputy AD Borman, South Carolina Deputy AD Waddell, Miami (FL) Senior Assoc. AD for Business Operations Boone, Tennessee Executive Assoc. AD/COO Sigmon & West Virginia Deputy AD Zinn. (link)
The day started off with reports University System Chancellor Caret would speak to Maryland Prez Loh, AD Evans & FB HC Durkin in separate conversations during the morning hours. Turns out all of those discussions were postponed. The Regents met again via conference call late yesterday afternoon. No additional info provided. (link, link); Here's an updated version of the full report. Doesn't include redactions & there are new appendices. 369 pages. Former Terps AD Anderson's statement is included in the new report, "The way I was treated was undeserved, the process was a disgrace, my reputation has been permanently damaged and my family has suffered terribly. It is also abundantly clear that the instability and void in leadership that was created by my abrupt departure lead to a serious lack of institutional control. […] It is my sincere belief that the instability within the athletic department that began in September 2017 led to the devastating tragedy in May 2018." (link)
The Athletic's Auerbach pens on FB HC buyout trend lines, gets LSU AD Alleva on the record, "Everyone wants to win too bad and then instead of saying no, sometimes we all say yes too much. I guess that’s the simple way of saying it because you think that a coach is the magic potion that’s going to get you a bunch of wins, and they have some leverage. They think they have leverage — and they do have leverage because they had the opportunity to go somewhere else and somewhere else is willing to pay that price. [...] It's a bad circle we're in right now." Florida AD Stricklin says agents are "really smart and find a way to get leverage" [...] ...suddenly, it becomes a really uncomfortable thing because all the pressure is on you as an athletic director or as a decision-maker. All of the pressure is on you at that point because everyone says, OK, you’re the guy who let the seemingly successful guy walk out the door, you better have a good answer." Stricklin goes on to point to "self-preservation" kicking in & giving the incumbent more money. Outgoing Vanderbilt AD Williams believes "we're headed for a collision course," notes increased costs across a campus commonly trickles down to students via increased tuition. More. (link)
The first set of College Football Playoff rankings are due out this evening & there are handful of folks behind the scenes who know the selections as soon as the committee hits "go." CFP Senior Director of Operations & Logistics Brock runs the voting tabulation computer, so she's technically the very first to see results. Overall, CFP boss Hancock estimates only 20-ish total people know the standings before they hit the airwaves. COO Williams says working for the CFP was her "dream job," controls screens within the selection room to compare data points for different teams as requested by the committee. Communications lead Lehe remarks how she reads over the final selections on the Sunday after conference title games "900 times" before it goes to ESPN 45 minutes before the show. More. (link)
Add Men's & Women's Hockey to the list of sports trying to slow down the recruiting process. Minnesota Duluth Men's HC Sandelin points to his 12-year old daughter having teammates just two years older who are already making college decisions, "I think it’s crazy, but I can have my opinion. Other coaches are going to have theirs." If suggested changes occur, Men's programs wouldn't be able to officially contact prospective student-athletes until January 1 of their sophomore year, but no scholarship offers until August 1 of their junior year. For the Women, June 15 of sophomore year, no visits in any capacity until August 1. NCHC Commish Fenton was part of the proposals, believes some key loopholes will be shut & likes the narrowing of the verbal commitment window. (link)
"Content relative to cost" is a newish term pushed forward by Arkansas professor Dittmore he believes is crucial to understand as the TV rights landscape evolves. Dittmore reviews literature from the likes of notable author Ariely on supply & demand curves, as well as the impact of potential "anchor pricing" by ESPN+ of $4.99 per month. Dittmore: "American consumers have long been willing to pay for content provided there was value discerned from that content, but we can see through cord-cutting statistics that Americans have already begun making value proposition decisions about what content to put into their magazine stack. The challenge for college sports administrators will continue to be how they position their product in this hyper-competitive market." (link)
Latest SBJ: Media headliner Ourand inks on key storylines, including a slow down of cord cutting for four straight quarters now. Fox Sports EVP Mulvihill on Facebook's potential positioning as a rights holder, "Facebook is the greatest reach vehicle in the world. Yet their ability to amass an audience in real time suggests to me that they may be better positioned as a complement to the traditional distribution rather than a replacement." Mulvihill also notes that legalized sports gambling has yet to increase TV ratings, but believes it will do so as in-game wagering becomes more mainstream. (link); If there's a NFL lockout after the 2021 season when the current collective bargaining agreement is up, TV contracts will continue to pay out. Makes me wonder what would happen in the event of a student-athlete boycott of a major game? (link); As the ACC Network linear play gets closer, Raycom Sports knows its future will be different, inks a deal with Legacy Motorsports. (link); Note: Thanks to new synergy between D1.ticker, SBJ & Learfield, all three of these links are open for full viewing. No pay wall.
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Kentucky FB is making a splash in Times Square this week as the Wildcats get ready to host Georgia on Saturday in a kick that will determine the SEC East champ. Digital boards feature standout student-athletes Snell & Allen alongside a "We Are UK" tag. (link); Over in Columbus, NACDA is hosting its Fall Forum. A scroll through Twitter mentions includes UCLA AD Guerrero, Chicago State's Zorich, a session on "Managing Donor Expectations," former Maryland boss Anderson, Indiana State AD Clinkscales, former Tennessee/Kansas State AD Currie, more. (link)

Man, shots fired. SEC Network's Finebaum on UCF's current FB narrative, "The only thing UCF has going for them is a grandstanding athletic director who just can’t keep his mouth shut, but also can’t schedule a decent opponent and (UCF has) a fan base that is delusional." Finebaum anxious to see the initial CFP standings, vouches for Kentucky to be ahead of UCF. I can't wait to see how White plays this one. (link)
Ohio State FB HC Meyer says he expects to be back in Columbus next season to lead the Buckeyes. Exactly: "I plan on coaching. [...] I'm fine. I want Ohio State to be successful in the worst way. I don't want people to worry about me." (link)
Louisville AD Tyra & his team have reviewed all the new MBB-FBI transcripts - one of which mentioned current student-athlete King - does not believe it will impact any eligibility situations. (link); Tyra says a weak fan turnout for last Saturday's FB matchup against Wake Forest is impacting FB recruiting, "Fans want to send a message to the program that, 'We don't like where we are.' And it's not going to improve if you're going to help us run off recruits. We need fans there to show their loyalty, show their support and help us get these top recruits and be there." (link)
Yahoo's Forde writes on HCs whose names are starting to pop up as NFL HC options, like that of Oklahoma's Riley with the Cleveland Browns post now open. Riley indicates he has no interest in the NFL, but would never say never. Forde lists Purdue's Brohm, Stanford's Shaw, Michigan's Harbaugh, Florida's Mullen & Notre Dame's Kelly as those in the same boat. Does not think Ohio State's Meyer makes sense at the pro level. (link)
More Personnel: Long-time media exec Alessandri, who worked most recently as Univision's EVP, joins Turnkey as Managing Dir. and GM of media practice and will oversee talent recruitment/executive search for media, digital and tech companies, as well as for non-media entities such as leagues, teams, venues, events and tours. (link); USC FB HC Helton parts ways with OL Coach Callaway and will take over play-calling duties from OC Martin, who remains on staff for the Trojans. (link); Missouri places Swimming & Diving HC Rhodenbaugh on administrative leave while the school investigates allegations related to "team management issues." AHC Grevers will serve as interim HC. (link); Women's Soccer HC Cross out at UTEP. (link); Idaho State will not renew the contract of Women's Soccer HC Gibson after the Bengals went 2-14 this season. (link); Syracuse Women's Soccer HC Wheddon resigns to "pursue other opportunities." (link); Same for Seton Hall Women's Soccer boss Stainton. (link); The Seattle Mariners showed "very strong interest" in Oregon State pitching coach Yeskie for the same job at the MLB level, but Yeskie declined to interview. His salary was bumped up to more than $245K over the summer. (link); Will former Louisville MBB HC Pitino return to the NBA sidelines? He says he would "have deep interest in it," especially if the team were a young one as he believes his forte is developing young players. (link)
Teamworks unveils a new academic success management tool, branded as 'Teamworks Academics.' The product was designed in unison with a notable advisory board made up of senior academic leaders from Syracuse, Michigan State, Rutgers, Alabama, Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, Oklahoma & USC. Value proposition: Teamworks Academics will streamline the development and execution of objective-based learning plans. Looks like it will be available summer of next year. (link)
The days are counting down for Ole Miss's expected response from the NCAA on its FB penalties appeal. Rebel boss Bjork: "It’s a long, drawn-out process, and we’re anxious like everyone else to hear that final outcome. We really do expect it to happen any day now. […] If there’s not relief granted we’ll see what our options are. What those look like I really can’t say. Other people have tried in the court systems. That’s a tough road to go. You don’t typically win cases against the NCAA. We don’t want to delay anything further, especially a postseason ban. We need our team to move forward, but strategies and tactics, all those things are going to be on the table, because we need to move forward and defend our great university." (link)
The Knight Commission met yesterday in Washington D.C. with considerable conversation about how to improve the MBB recruiting landscape. The group continues to push for a set of minimal professional standards for coaches to meet on the student-athlete health & wellness fronts, as well as "their role as educators." The Commission also wants detailed reporting from HCs on outside income, likes the addition of independent directors to the NCAA's executive board, more. (linklink); New Knight Commission members: Penn State Prez Barron, Duke VP & GC Bernard, Arizona State Prez Crow, Los Angeles Rams Director of Player Engagement McClendon, as well as Pilgrim & Associates' namesake leader. (link)
Nevada inks a sponsorship deal believed to be the first of its kind for any NCAA member as Mountain Lion Aviation will contribute directly to Wolf Pack women's athletics via cash & professional development support for current & former student-athletes. AD Knuth calls it an "innovative investment." Mountain Lion Aviation will technically be a presenting sponsor of UNR's women's programs. (link)
VCU rolls-out upgrades to the Siegel Center as tip of the 2018-19 season is right around the corner. There's now a 'Platinum Dock' in the northwest corner of the venue with a full service bar. Rams AD McLaughlin on the addition of beer & alcohol, "We took input from many, many areas and spent time discussing the operational opportunities and challenges. Since we don’t have experience in the point-of-sales aspect of selling beer at men’s basketball games, we will evaluate our operations throughout the season and tweak where we see fit." (link)
Facilities, continued: Stephen F. Austin leadership voted "yes" on a new hoops practice/performance building. Price tag: $26M. Lumberjacks AD Ivey: "The basketball performance center will include a court and a half, offices, new locker rooms for both the men and women, a new training facility, and a new weight room." (link); The Oakland Press's Caputo doesn't think there's a fit between Oakland & The Palace unless Detroit Pistons owner Gores subsidizes the deal. (link); Good shot of the new video board in Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium. (link)
Also Noticed: Georgia-Florida did a 4.5 overnight rating on the SEC on CBS. Marks the third-highest CFB overnight on any network this season, topped only by Ohio State-Penn State (6.1) and Ohio State-TCU (4.9). ABC pulled a 2.4 for Texas-Oklahoma State, ESPN a 1.8 for Iowa-Penn State, 1.6 for Purdue-Michigan State and 1.3 for Texas A&M-Mississippi State. FOX saw a 1.7 for Wisconsin-Northwestern and a 1.6 for Kansas State-Oklahoma. CBS down to 1.7 for Notre Dame-Navy compared to 1.8 meeting in 2016. (link); In a new amendment, three dozen former student-athletes and another student join the federal lawsuit alleging Ohio State officials knew about and didn't stop former team physician Strauss. (link); Michigan State will issue $500M in bonds for the Nassar settlement. (link); Former Indiana FB student-athlete Ellison, who was dismissed from the team and university last week, continues to push his innocence. (link); Check out Mississippi State's FB unis for this weekend, honoring WWII hero and MSU alum Montgomery. Sweet location for a photo shoot, too. (link); UCF will wear its all black space unis for this weekend's 'Space Game.' Lots of subtle stars. (link); Here's the Oregon-Jordan cleats the Ducks will don against UCLA. (link); Sounds like Twitter may get rid of the "like" button. (link); Next year's Washington State-Houston FB matchup will now be played at NRG Stadium in Houston as the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff. (link); The NHL is going all in on sports gambling, announces a multi-year deal with MGM for data sharing & more. (link)
