World War Two Week

What an interesting week we all had at Avonmore this week. All week our focus was on World War Two and each class had a different focus from rationing to evacuation to the role women played. The children had some excellent questions and fascinating insight into the war and the way people lived during the conflict. We even had a talk from David Merron who was evacuated out of London as child during The Blitz. He shared his experiences and read from his book 'Goodbye East End'.

More learning around Avonmore this week

This week in the Nursery as it is Halloween we have getting into the 'spirit' of things and have been busy dressing up, making wands, carving pumpkins and casting spells!

Reception have had a great week back after half term and have enjoyed exploring pumpkin scooping and potion making.

What an exciting first week back we’ve had in Year 1. The children have been fascinated to learn about rationing during World War Two. They have been busy sorting food that would have been rationed and have even made their own ration books.

Year 2 have had such an interesting week learning all about World War Two. We talked about 'Make Do and Mend' and began sewing our own patchwork quilt. We also got to explore some replica artefacts and an actual ration book brought in by one of our grandparents. You've worked so hard this week Year 2, keep it up!

Year 3 explored the reasons behind evacuation during World War Two as a focus for history week.

Year 4 very much enjoyed Hallowe'en Dress Up Day!

.This week Year 5 have been focusing on the role of Women in World War Two as part of Avonmore’s history week. We have used a range of sources to collect information about different war-time jobs, which we will be using to create our own recruitment posters!

Year 6 have settled quickly into this half of term; they are enjoying being journalists in English and have loved learning about London in the war during guided reading and in the afternoon. They have produced some great drawings in charcoal art in the style of Henry Moore depicting the tube shelters in London.

A very special visitor....
Miss Driscoll came in to see us with her new baby daughter Indi, born on 8th September.  Welcome to the newest member of the Avonmore family!
Avonmore Recommends

The 'Animal Science' series, by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Neal Layton, is not new, but remains a firm favourite.  Titles include 'Survivors, the toughest creatures on earth', 'What's eating you? Parasites - the inside story' and the children's favourite 'Poo, a natural history of the unmentionable'.  Nicola Davies is a prolific author, writing much of the cross over non-fiction picture books that you may be aware of, including one of our Reading Gladiator titles last year, 'I do not like snakes'.  This series is for older readers in KS2.  The books are full of fascinating information and explanations, peppered with comic strips and humorous illustrations.  There is a good deal of text; topics are explored in great detail, building knowledge upon knowledge, separating these books from the kinds of other non-fiction titles you see for this age range, which are often a random selection of isolated facts.   Some of these titles are in the classrooms, and we have several copies in the library too.  They could be read independently or together - and serve as excellent conversation starters...

The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Science360 app for iPad provides easy access to engaging science and engineering images and video from around the globe and a news feed featuring breaking news from NSF-funded institutions
