Angry Mom Newsletter: November 2, 2018

Some news about Black Friday, Record Store Day, November 23rd. We will open at 10am. You are welcome to line up earlier outside the store but our shop opens at 10am. Releases sold by number, first come, first serve. Be there!  Here's the official list again.

Great run of staff reviews to all the new records we've received this week. Most notably, a massive and incredulous reissue project by ATO Records for the first 5 LPs by Australian psych workhorses King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. Our new staffer Nick digs in. We've also restocked their other catalog titles as well. We also take on the very necessary issue of Bob Dylan's More Blood, More Tracks which is part of Dylan's continuous Bootleg Series, this time focused on 1975's Blood On The Tracks. Also a look at an obscure free / spiritual jazz reissue by the Black Artists Group via the excellent label Aguirre and Numero Group's look into another obscure sect of music history; the PINA (Private*Issue*New*Age) scene of Eugene, Oregon called Switched On Eugene.

Plus very cool new records in from Ty Segall, The Prodigy (new LP!), Daughters, Nick Cave / Warren Ellis, a beautiful live, unreleased radio session, in box set form, from the great Charles Mingus, and speaking of box sets... the expanded edition of Metallica's 4th album And Justice For All (another Metallica contest coming next week) and finally, Lee is very, very excited about this new Kelly Moran record, review forthcoming next week but until then check this.

Jeff Tweedy, of the still strong heritage act Wilco, has announced his first ever solo album of original material (following his 2017 solo album of Wilco songs re-imagined). Pre-order that here or see below.

New Music Reviews

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard (Flightless / ATO Reissues)
12 Bar Bruise LP
Eyes Like the Sky LP
Float Along—Fill Your Lungs LP
Oddments LP
Willoughby’s Beach 12" EP LISTEN

King Gizzard has risen out of the burgeoning Australian psychedelic rock scene and has claimed their throne after an exceptional run of five albums in 2017! But what gives with 2018? Only 2 7”s?! Well consider that rectified as Flightless and ATO now put back into print their first 5 releases from 2012-2014. These early releases showcase a version of the band still finding the eclectic sounds we know today.
Willoughby’s Beach was their second ep released in 2011. It’s raw, it’s fuzzy, it’s upbeat, it’s perfect psychedelic freakout material. Favorite cut: “Lunch Meat”, a nice chug-a-lugging early morning mantra.
With 12 Bar Bruise, we see a band progressing in their songwriting and sound-crafting with tons of extra noise throughout. Definitely more refined than their previous efforts but still plenty of psychedelic-punk bedlam. Favorite cut: “12 Bar Bruise.” The vocals for this track were recorded on a iPhone. That’s cool.
Eyes Like the Sky is a late night, peyote-driven spaghetti western. Narrated by Broderick Smith, this ode to the western is probably their most overlooked album. For fans of outlaws, gun fights, and psych rock. Favorite cut: “The God Man’s Goat Lust”: a dark and eerie tale of revenge and blood.
On Float Along-Fill Your Lungs, Gizzy Wizzy seem to have mellowed out a bit. The songs are still driving and rugged but anytime an album starts out with a 16-minute rip through psychedelic wormholes, you can tell their writing has become more relaxed. (ooo sitar, an allusion to their future in Microtones?) Favorite Cut: “Head On / Pill.” It’s 16 minutes of non-stop frenzy.
Oddments was the first I heard of this band back in 2014. It’s more laid back than previous releases and showcases the bands songwriting over the driving hell-scream of previous efforts. Favorite Cut: “Stressin.” A dreamy pop song floating on clouds.
Limited edition, colored vinyl represses are now in stock! Keep your bank account secure and avoid those overpriced originals. Don’t sleep! (Nick)
Bob Dylan - More Blood, More Tracks 2LP
(Columbia / Sony Legacy)
LISTEN
DELUXE 6CD SET ALSO AVAILABLE. There are two ways to listen to Bob Dylan – there is the more passive and reasonable approach, consuming the major or definitive works, and then there is the exhaustive and all inclusive approach where every crumb swept off the table is a potential golden nugget. Unfortunately I have found myself a part of the later category in which the bootlegs far outnumber official albums. It is not an easy road but it’s a road I have committed myself to. Considering the fact that rock bootlegs pretty much started with Dylan, the last 20 years have seen a painstakingly slow yet consistent trickling of fully authorized high fidelity versions of some of the most famous unofficial releases, aka The Bootleg Series. Some of these releases are truly mind blowing and are even more essential than their “officially” released counterparts. Some are just plain bewildering as well but all of them are extensive in their detail and immaculate in their presentation. Some of us need to hear all 47 takes of “Visions of Johanna,” and its validating that the Dylan estate knows that we sick-minded individuals are out here waiting for the next installment. And that time has arrived.
Volume 14 in the series, More Blood, More Tracks, is now upon us and as far as the vault of yet to be released bootlegs is concerned, this is the holy grail. The Blood On The Tracks that has been a part of the Dylan cannon has always been known as version 2.0 to those of us who are dedicated to collecting those said crumbs. The story goes that after the original sessions were completed, and while the LP jackets were already being manufactured, Dylan caved under pressure from those who had heard the test pressings and decided to re-record half the album. This collection of songs was undoubtedly his best in years with songs that were melancholic, sparse, and not very commercial. These original takes, or the “New York Sessions” as they have been dubbed, have lived in infamy ever since. Test pressings have sold for as much as $15,000, poorly transferred bootlegs have circulated, tracks have appeared on various compilations but this period has never been given the full Bootleg Series treatment. Until now.

As with most of the previous installments, there is an over the top, all encompassing version of the set in addition to a “Best Of” 2LP sequence. The 6 cd version of More Blood has over 70 previously unreleased recordings comprising every take from both the initial NY sessions, and the secondary Minneapolis sessions. The 2 LP version collects 11 tracks, all of which have never before been released. Hearing these songs as they were initially produced is truly a revelation. The immediacy and emotion in these takes completely blows the proper release out of the water for me. Every moment that was less than great is now transformed into numerous revelations. I would be lying if I said that every single Bootleg Series is necessary for those who appreciate Bob Dylan. But this is not one of those releases. Absolutely essential! (Adam)
Black Artists Group - In Paris, Aries 1973 LP (Aguirre) LISTEN
Coalescing in St. Louis out of informal jam sessions with various avant-garde players, the Black Artists Group (aka BAG), came together around drummer Charles Bobo Shaw, trombonist Joseph Bowie (Lester’s younger brother) and saxophonist Oliver Lake. The group challenged the status quo of jazz by creating an unsettling sound while stimulating and ascending new heights in their own playing. This kind of jazz was not welcome at traditional clubs in St. Louis. They were pushed to the fringes creating rackets at coffee houses and theatres instead while collaborating with dancers and actors. Encouraged by their friends in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, BAG flew to Paris in 1973 to perform a set to an audience that would no doubt support cutting-edge music. Joined by trumpeters Baikida Carroll and Floyd LeFlore, the result is this LP, brought back to life by the excellent label Aguirre. BAG’s improvisations are given space and room to breathe with African percussion such as woodblocks, gongs, marimbas and log drums. Solos and structural compositions are not the motive here. Shape-shifting flourishes, schizophrenic and sparse rhythmic order and a feeling of oneness are what shine through on this record. It’s an exploratory and unorthodox session and the lone evidence of BAG’s innovative and experimental life. (Dom)
V/A - Switched-On Eugene 2LP
(Numero Group) LISTEN

Beautiful and much-needed exploration of the PINA records that were coming out of the Pacific NW, and in this case, Eugene, OR. The Eugene Electronic Music Collective (EEMC) sought to issue local and experimental records and cassettes by home-recording gurus and basement wizards with their head in the clouds and their spirits in the infinite cosmos. There’s so much to dig into throughout Switched-On Eugene from bizzaro synth-grooves, interstellar explorations, forward-thinking pop, lo-fi synth manipulations, ambient new age, dense improvisations and serene folk-like synth compositions. And it’s put to tape by an idyllic group of post-hippie futurists.
This is a great example of a scene being unearthed and presented in worthy fashion by the always reliable Numero. All the artists are completely obscure and to cover this on your own would be insurmountable (and quite expensive). Maybe the comp of the year! (Dom)
