Hey friends! Jer here.

We spent Monday at the CityLab Detroit conference, where we had a couple of interesting conversations. One with Mayor Mike Duggan, another with urban thinker Richard Florida.

Duggan talked to Sven about bike lanes (he says Detroit residents are for them and he's building a city for residents, not suburbanites speeding through) and workforce development (he says there are only 50-60 licensed plumbers in the entire city of Detroit).

I spoke with Florida, who spends a lot of time here, about Detroit's progress and our challenges, including transit and bridging the intense city/suburb divide.

Those conversations are in this episode of the podcast.

But talking to folks at what we (jokingly) called Mayor-A-Palooza because of all the mayors and city leaders in town, Detroit's dealing with a lot of things that other cities across America are. And, Detroit has a unique opportunity to cut our own path.

I also want to talk for a minute about the smiling guy at the top of the email. That's Godwin Ihentuge. He's the founder of YumVillage, and he's opening up a brick and mortar location in New Center in the old Atomic Chicken space. We talked to him about all the details.

On that episode, we also talked to Matt Friedman. He's one of Detroit's top PR and media professionals and has thoughts around the Ilitch family's possible play to start a sports network and why the District Detroit needs to do a better job of communicating with the community.
Wednesday Weather: Periods of rain in the morning and cloudy throughout the day. High of 58, low 44.

Thing To Do Wednesday: Join Castalia Cocktails in Midtown on Halloween night for a "creepily creative boo-bonic plague experience" of cocktails. Tickets include FOUR cocktails paired with fragrances and appetizers. You're set for the night. It might be the best way to spend an adult Halloween. And yes, you can bring a costume. I can personally vouch for these guys. More here.
ESPN reports that the Detroit Lions have traded wide receiver Golden Tate to the defending Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third-round pick.

Tate was in his fifth season with the Lions and had 44 catches for 517 yards and three touchdowns. He had been the team’s most consistent receiver, with 90 receptions in each of his four full seasons with Detroit.

Tate was in the final year of a five-year contract.
Turns out that race for that congressional seat formerly held by John Conyers, Jr. isn’t settled after all.

Detroit City Council president Brenda Jones has filed paperwork to mount a write-in campaign against fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib in the 13th congressional district.

In a confusing primary election, Jones won the seat to serve out the seven weeks between November and the end of Conyers’ term, meaning she’ll head to Capitol Hill next month. Tlaib won the seat for a full two-year term starting in January.

As a write-in, Jones will run as an independent in the November 6 race, which is next week. The move is sending waves through the Democratic Party. Jones won the temporary term by less than 1 percentage point.. just 900 votes... and most within the party establishment thought this one was over, with no Republican running against Tlaib.

Although being a write-in IS a long shot, Jones is a popular figure in Detroit politics.

If Tlaib prevails, she would be the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.
Mayor Duggan says he’s a big fan of the new electric scooters that are popping up literally all over the city — especially now in the wake of the expansion into neighborhoods that we told you about last week. And more are likely on the way.

The city is working with the National Association of City Transportation Officials and Bloomberg Associates to get universal ridership data to study e-scooter usage and rider habits.

Duggan says the data could provide valuable foot-traffic data that the city could use to pitch businesses to move to Detroit.

The city last week allowed both Lime and Bird to add 100 scooters each to their fleets so long as they were deployed in neighborhoods beyond Grand Boulevard. Spin, another e-scooter company, is also interested in bringing scooters to Detroit.
