Maryland: ESPN's Rittenberg indicates Prez Loh acted without consultation of the board in the move to dismiss FB HC Durkin from his post late yesterday afternoon. Loh: "This is a difficult decision, but it is the right one for our entire University. I will devote the remaining months of my presidency to advancing the needed reforms in our Athletic Department that prioritize the safety and well-being of our student-athletes." Terps AD Evans delivered the news to Durkin, who was said to be surprised. The father of late FB student-athlete McNair, "We feel gratified that some justice has been done, that Dr. Loh took it upon himself to do the right thing." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann notes Durkin was fired without cause, "It obligates Maryland to pay Durkin liquidated damages equal to 65% of the remainder of his contract. Durkin was scheduled to be paid $7.8 million from 2019 to ’21 and is also owed compensation for the last two months of ’18. Applying these data points, the university will pay Durkin about $5.1 million." There's still a possibility Durkin sues the school for defamation, false light, tortious interference, intentional infliction of emotional distress and/or lack of due process. McCann also says Durkin "could become a problematic figure for the school in its defense of McNair's death." (link); Former University System Chancellor Kirwan & former board chair Shea laud Loh for his decision, don't want Loh to retire. (link, link); UMD Student Government Prez Allen: "Tonight demonstrated the power of student advocacy. It was was an absolute honor to speak to Marty McNair tonight. We set out to get #JusticeForJordan, and to hear his support meant the world to us. There  is still work to be done." (link); Durkin's exit came after a day of scathing opinions from journalists nationwide, including Washington Post headliner Jenkins' super direct title, "Don't let your son play for Maryland," as well as significant push back from state lawmakers & opinion leaders around College Park. The current USM board did not offer a full comment last night.
Oregon MBB AC Stubblefield traded 20 calls during two hours of phone time with would-be agent Dawkins, who was found guilty last month of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud as a result of the FBI's probe into MBB. While the content of the conversations is unknown and the calls themselves are not evidence of misconduct, The Oregonian reports that the records "raise new questions about Oregon's willingness to repeatedly engage with a talent hustler and the thoroughness of the university's internal investigation of its basketball program in the year since Dawkins was first arrested by the FBI." UO Senior Assoc AD for Communications Stanton says the university is not aware of "any new credible information" that would cause it to amend its previous position on the matter, adding: "It is not surprising that during the time in which we were actively recruiting Brian Bowen, one of our coaches was in contact with the person who was on point with the family." (link); Meanwhile, Arizona MBB HC Miller's job is not in jeopardy, according to Regent Ridenour, who says a decision to hold an executive session meeting of the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) today was made so the board could get an update on the federal trial that ended in New York last week from Prez Robbins and AD Heeke. Ridenour: "This is going to be a long process. ... I expect we're going to have to wait until everything comes out [in all three trials] and the NCAA completes their investigation and then President Robbins will, I'm sure, make a decision." (link)
Even more from UCF AD White on a topic that needs no intro, "If we go undefeated two straight years and we don’t get in, I’d say it’s impossible. Not many times in the history of college football has a team gone undefeated in two consecutive seasons. So, if our team takes care of business, I think we’ll find out if it is possible. […] Right now, it is not a real playoff. It’s an invitational. You can’t call it a playoff when a team can win every game and not have a chance to play for the championship. Four is better than two but eight is better than four. It’s silly we can’t figure out how to settle this on the field." (link)
The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded $22.5M in funding to the NCAA to expand its comprehensive study into the impacts of head injuries over several years. The NCAA-DOD Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium, led by the medical schools at Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, in collaboration with the Uniformed Services University, began its study with $30M in DOD funding to focus on the acute effects of concussions through a sequence of tests on concussed participants in the hours, days and weeks after the injury. The newly funded phase involves testing of the participants after they've left college and up to four years after their athletic or service academy careers have ended. IU Department of Psychiatry Chair McAllister: "By comparing these groups across multiple years, we think we can parse out the effects of concussions, versus repetitive head impacts, versus normal life at university. This is critical for us to make informed decisions that protect our athletes, members of the military and other members of our communities.” (link)
Sun Belt Commish Benson discusses Appalachian State's addition to the league as it nears the end of its five-year evaluation period, telling the Winston-Salem Journal he had "already circled App State and Georgia Southern" in anticipation of the departures of five schools for Conference USA. "I had a conversation with [former Appalachian State AD Cobb] before I even took the Sun Belt job about App State's desire to go to FBS. And the same here for Georgia Southern. I knew that, one, the Sun Belt was going to be in need of replacement teams. And I knew that both of these programs were right for inclusion." While Benson expected the Mountaineers to transition seamlessly in FB, the move has worked out so well he says it is lifting the tide of the school's other programs, including WXC, which last week took home the conference title. "I think the football piece was expected. The other sports, they knew, we knew, it was going to take some patience and I think we’re going to see that there’s just too many assets that App State has that should allow them to win championships across the board in the Sun Belt. It’s going to happen.” As tends to follow logically, the Mountaineers' FB success is manifesting itself in new facilities, including an 80K-100K addition as part of a north end zone project scheduled to be ready for 2020. "Again, it comes with success. ...  think that’s a demonstration that the App State fan base and the App State corporate base is all in for the future of App State football.” (link)
Bryant Prez Machtley chats with 1.Question's @TaiMBrown on his view of the current state of college athletics. Machtley is on the NCAA's Board of Directors & Board of Governors, "I'm bullish on the future college athletics. I think it's extremely important for students to learn about teamwork, how to win, and frankly how to lose. […] It's important that all presidents, athletic directors, and commissioners understand that the purpose of NCAA is more than just regulations. It's really fundamentally, how do we educate our students better, how do we make sure they are safe, and what is going to help them to become very good citizens in the United States. […] The addition of five independent directors to the NCAA Board of Governors is a very important step forward to gaining the confidence of the both the public and private individuals in our country." As the debate over whether and how much to pay student-athletes continues, the AP reports that the cost of attendance stipend, which student-athletes currently receive, is "quietly helping" by allowing players to pay utility bills, take in an occasional movie or help out with their families. Louisville Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Carns says the stipends also alleviate some of the burden of having to find extra money from other sources, "Maybe they don't have to work or get that part-time job because they've got this money to use for those expenses." Virginia FB HC Mendenhall adds that it "didn't make a lot of sense" for student-athletes to worry about earning extra money in addition to their academic and athletic responsibilities, adding: "I think it's moral and I think it was necessary." Mendenhall also notes that the discrepancies in stipends based on the cost of living in various cities, has not proven to be a barrier in recruiting, allaying some of his initial hesitation. "I have never been asked the amount compared to someone else's, so what I was concerned about never came to fruition." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
In his weekly 'Byte of the Week,' LEAD1 Prez/CEO McMillen believes an NCAA loss in the Alston case could lead to another round of conference realignment. McMillen points to comments by Notre Dame Prez Jenkins on a likely push by the Fighting Irish to form a league with like-minded institutions based around the current collegiate model. McMillen: "This next wave could further exacerbate the competitive differences in college sports. [...] Some schools may withdraw from the FBS altogether." (link); With UAB FB surging & the possibility of the Blazers hosting the Conference USA title game, the SWAC has announced its own championship kick will move from Birmingham to the campus of the top ranked regular season finisher. (link)

Ohio State AD Smith provides context around Buckeyes FB HC Meyer's current health situation, "I think he’s put in place an outstanding management plan using his medical experts. We’re so fortunate to have the people we have at Ohio State and the Wexner Medical Center, so he’s getting the help he needs there and he’s got a management plan. My only focus and concern is with helping him with that management plan. He’s demonstrated thus far his ability to do that, so what we have to do is just focus on that. When there are situations around games where there is stimuli that might cause him to have headaches, we make sure to help him with that and go from there. That’s what I do. I don’t try to do anything else beyond that, because it really is about making sure he has the care he needs." Continues to say there's zero friction between the two leaders. (link)
The Murfreesboro Daily News Journal details five allegations Middle Tennessee State investigated during an internal review related to claims by a former FB student-athlete of player abuse and altered drug tests. The university found no wrongdoing by HC Stockstill and the athletic staff. Full report included, with some redactions. (link)
Towson named former Maryland Jockey Club VP of Communications Gathagan as Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications. Gathagan on the opportunity to work at his alma mater: “This is a dream come true and I can't thank [AD] Tim Leonard enough for the opportunity to help promote the teams I watched as a student in the mid-1980s and covered in the late 80's and early 90's. Talk about coming full circle. I am looking forward to using the relationships that I have built throughout the years to help grow the Towson sports brand in the Baltimore community.” (link)
ESPN has named EVP and managing director of ESPN International Wolff as GM of ESPN+. In his new role, Wolff will manage ESPN+ in conjunction with Disney's Direct-to-Consumer International (DTCI) segment and ESPN. Wolff: "ESPN+ is in the first inning of a very long game. There is a tremendous opportunity to grow the service and expand our position as the leading streaming service and provider of digital products for sports fans.” (link); ESPN+ has also announced it will expand its distribution to Xbox One and Playstation 4 consoles, where it will embed the streaming service in the flagship ESPN app, which was recently updated. The gaming consoles join Amazon Fire devices, Apple devices, Android devices and Roku devices as vehicles through which ESPN+ can be streamed. (link)
SIDEARM Sports and CUE Audio have announced a new partnership whereby colleges and universities with a SIDEARM mobile app will be able to utilize CUE's data-over-audio technology to create synchronized light shows, synchronized selfies, trivia and coupons for delivery through smartphones without the need for cellular service or connection to Wi-Fi. SIDEARM Prez and CEO Rubin: "The technology CUE brings to our collegiate athletic, mobile apps allow our clients' new opportunities to engage with their loyal fans. It also fosters an abnormally high level of reliability and widespread adoption because a Wi-Fi or cellular connection isn’t required to launch or participate in the engagements.” (link)
FB ACs move around more than just about any other group of leaders in college athletics. Auburn defensive backs coach Woodson discusses how important it is for ACs to buy into the culture of a new HC without losing his own core values. Woodson goes on, "Any time you're involved with a team or a family, you have to realize it isn't about I and me, it's about we and us. […] A personal leader wants to gets to know you as a person and leads you accordingly. While a positional leader uses their position as the root of their influence." (link); Woodson's 1.Question conversation weaves in nicely with this HBR article on how new CEOs can unite their senior leadership teams. It's a bit of a long read from a trio of consultants groups around subtopics of establishing common ground, exposing misalignments, getting psychical (moving on ideas), the path forward & the leader's "choice." In closing, "Even when teams seem to be aligned, they are often divided in underlying ways. Bringing those divisions to the surface is the first step in creating an enduring alignment and a powerful new-growth strategy." (link)
The UConn Board of Trustees approved the financial plans for a new $45M on-campus hockey arena yesterday. The funds for the facility, which is slated to be ready by the fall of 2021, are expected to include $12.5M of the university’s reserve money, $10M from the profit from recent property sales, and $22.5M from a developer with tax-exempt bonds. Although Hockey East requires each of its members to have an on-campus arena seating at least 4K, UConn received a waiver to build a smaller, 2,500-seat arena. Considering the Huskies averaged 4,291 at the XL Center last season, some have criticized the university for building the smaller facility, but school officials say the arena could expand to 3,500. AD Benedict: “How are we supposed to compete and be competitive from a recruitment standpoint with local and regional type prospective student-athletes that are being recruited by BU, and Northeastern, and Boston College and Quinnipiac and Yale, and all of those types of programs, when we don’t have close to the type of facilities that they have? So this really is the next step in the progression of building a nationally competitive program.” (link)
Evansville issued a statement yesterday, detailing the communication the university had with Missouri in regards to the transfer of MBB student-athlete Smith. The Tigers’ initial waiver for Smith’s immediate eligibility was rejected by the NCAA. The crux of the issue centered on the "run off" standard, which involves a coaching staff communicating to a student-athlete that they will not have their financial aid renewed and will not have a place on the team. Evansville statement: "UE declined to support inaccurate claims that represented the University of Evansville, its athletic department, coach (Walter) McCarty and his staff in a negative light ... the University of Evansville has not had any communication or impact on the waiver that was submitted by the University of Missouri to the NCAA." (link)
Facilities, continued: Mississippi State is ready for a revamp of Humphrey Coliseum. New court-level club with 580 overall seats, and 80 of the loge variety, an expanded concourse, new lobby, 160 added terrace seats, enhancements to bathrooms. No price tag mentioned. AECOM & Dale Partners Architects on the job. (link); We'll have to wait until later today to see interior pictures of Dayton's $72M project on UD Arena. The exterior looks nice & fresh. New wi-fi should allow fans stay connected far easier. (link, link); Here's a good set of pics from TCU AD Donati on the progress of the east side addition to Amon G. Carter Stadium. (link)
Loyola Chicago MBB is focused on its nutrition game in an effort to repeat another deep run in March. Ramblers Assoc. AD for Sports Performance Vitel notes the challenge of creating good habits for student-athletes who were used to just grabbing a hot dog between games on the AAU circuit. Pregame: lean proteins & good carbs in the form of starches. Postgame: fatty meats that taste good. (link); Boston U. has a new Terrier Fueling Station that was paid for by an NCAA grant. Grab-and-go yogurts, protein drinks, smoothies, energy bars, some made-to-order options. (link)
Outkick the Coverage's Travis believes the SEC on CBS TV package is one of the most undervalued in all of sports at math that works out to $3.7M per game annually ($55M overall per year). Tension from CBS not adding to the kitty when Texas A&M & Missouri came aboard leads Travis to conclude it's super unlikely the two parties continue beyond the current deal that runs to 2023. As to who will be airing the SEC's first-choice games in the future, Travis envisions a bidding war, making plausible cases for platforms ranging from ESPN and Turner to Netflix and Apple -- perhaps even before the contract expires. However, at the top of the heap may be New Fox given it's commitment to sports & current lineup. Travis: "Combine the SEC title game with the SEC game of the week and you’re probably talking about a TV package that would be worth $250 million standing alone on the open market right now." Travis is no expert on the media rights space, but does make some good points. (link)
Also Noticed: Wow, BYU AD Holmoe really went all out for his Halloween costume this year. Impressive. Also included are pictures of his getups for the past several years. (link); The Nike N7 basketball jersey partnership enters its eighth year, with the turquoise jersey color continuing to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. This year's participating programs include Florida State, Fort Lewis College, Gonzaga, Haskell Indian Nations University, Marquette, Mesa CC, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, San Diego State and Stanford. (link); The Ohio Supreme Court rules that the widow of former Notre Dame FB student-athlete Schmitz, who lost her husband in February 2015, can sue the school and NCAA over allegations he was disabled by concussions during his college playing days in the 1970s. (link); Drexel launches the Forever Dragons Society, a new program for planned giving. Benefits of membership include annual luncheons, invitations to special events and seminars and a subscription to the newsletter. (link); Saint Mary's will have three concession stands that serve beer and wine inside McKeon Pavilion this year for MBB home games. Similarly, beer will be available for sale at home MBB games at Loyola Marymount. Both schools work with Sodexo for concessions. (linklink); From Ring Magazine's Coppinger: "DAZN has aggressively pursued Gennady Golovkin, and the sides are in advanced talks." (link); Citadel FB will play at Georgia Southern in 2023 for a guaranteed $320K. (link); Georgia Southern will also welcome Gardner-Webb to Paulson Stadium in 2021.
