Welcome to my latest update. My Big Conversation took up half of the last few weeks and, after Parliament returned on 9 October, Brexit, trains, further education, Burma, and local manufacturing are among the issues I’ve worked on.

Brexit

As the Government’s handling of negotiations with the EU stumbles from crisis to crisis, the issue has dominated my time as a Shadow Brexit Minister. Read my October update here.

Sheffield-London trains

I challenged Transport Ministers over cuts to London-Sheffield services, which have been made to enable improvements to travel across London and the South-East. Read more.

Universal Credit

I met with Sheffield welfare advisors to discuss the Universal Credit roll out starting on 7 November, and in Parliament we pressed the Government to halt their plans. Read more from Sheffield here.

Love Our Colleges

I was pleased to meet with Sheffield College Principal Angela Foulkes, and with UCU reps, and give my backing to the Love Our Colleges campaign which is seeking fair funding for further education. Read more.

Supporting Burma’s Karen people

I met with Saw Wee Eh Htoo, an environmental and human rights activist, who briefed me on the human rights situation in Karen State which I will raise with the Foreign Secretary. Read more.

Backing local manufacturers

I’ve called for co-ordinated action to tackle knife crime, but am concerned about proposals in the Offensive Weapons Bill to stop knife manufacturers from delivering knives to homes, so I've tabled an amendment to the Bill to protect local companies.

Immigration detention

I met with Stephen Shaw, who led a review of welfare of people in immigration detention, and met Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes on ending indefinite detention, on which I’m working across parties.

International students

As Co-Chair of the All-Party Group for International Students, I met the Chair of the Migration Advisory Committee to discuss their recent report, and spoke at the World Week parade celebrating the contribution of international students to Sheffield.
