NOVEMBER 2018 NEWSLETTER

Dear Readers,

It's Halloween night and I'm writing to you in between visits with some of our favorite people who stopped by the store to celebrate an anniversary with us. Thank you for being a part of our community. Sometimes building a business feels a lot like a two steps forward, one step back thing (with an occasional one step forward and two back), and when you're in the middle of a long road, it's  important to just embrace these milestone moments for the sake of reminding ourselves that yes, we have a lot to do, but we've come along way since Day One.

This November I'd just like to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work of our team, and how grateful I am to call them my coworkers and friends. Jenny, Karen, Geneva, Sara, and Sandra, there wouldn't be a Roundabout Books without you.

Jenny, Karen, and Geneva have been a part of Roundabout since we opened. There is an endless amount of work to do behind the scenes of a bookstore, especially a brand new one, and I am so grateful for the hard work ethic, commitment to our store, and passion for books that these three women show every single day. Jenny and Karen have continued to take on more roles in buying, planning, and training as our two store managers. And though Geneva's schedule has changed, her passion about getting the right books in people's hand never dies, and I'm grateful to still have her as a part of our team.

Our two new team members, Sarah and Sandra, have both worked very hard to learn All. The. Things. Their willingness to pitch in and help out with anything is wonderful, and I'm very excited to see what they help us accomplish here.

We have a lot going on this month, so I hope you'll take a moment to read this months schedule below. The Saturday after Thanksgiving (11/24/18) is a day to celebrate all the small and locally owned businesses in Bend.  We hope you'll come see us that weekend, as well as all the other great new retailers in Northwest Crossing. And if you're looking for a way to "opt out' of Black Friday, we will have a very special local author, Shannon Ables, presenting her new book, Living the Simply Luxurious Life, at 4pm the Friday after Thanksgiving. This will be a perfect event to just relax and enjoy the holiday with your family members in town.

I wish all of you a very happy and warm Thanksgiving with friends and loved ones. We are looking forward to a joyful season and can't wait to share it with you. Cheers!

Yours in Reading,
Cassie

We are doing our best to tread lightly on the Earth, and to us this means not just recycling, but reducing. I know this can and will be inconvenient, and it feels very daunting to implement, but we're moving ahead with our plans to eliminate single use items from our cafe in 2019. We are in the middle of creating a few programs to give away some Hydroflasks and other reusable items in the first part of the year. We will also be selling reusable straws soon  to help you get ready for this change. I'm waiting for the holiday season sales to purchase some new mugs and things the store needs, but the plans are laid out to get this all done in January.  We hope you'll join our effort in 2019 to reduce, reduce, reduce!
New to Northwest Crossing? There's a meeting for that!  This group meets the first Tuesday of each month in our shop. Two veteran Northwest Crossing members will tell you everything you need to know about activities going on in the area. The meeting time has been changed for the next two months: they will meet at 3pm on Nov 6th, and 3pm on Dec 4th.
We are working on the 2019 calendar this month!  If you are a group that meets here regularly and you want to renew or change your meeting time for 2019 please let us know so that we can get you written into the calendar before we schedule new groups. Simply call the store at 541-306-6564.

Story-Telling with Jared Anderson
November 16th, 6 pm

We hope you'll join us for this very special storytelling experience with Jared Anderson, storyteller, life coach, youth mentor and group facilitator. With a careful ear for what story wants to be told and an earnest presence, Jared skillfully weaves old folk tales and Myths to drumbeats. The stories bring the wisdom of old cultures alive, with contemporary messages, and are both fun and dynamic. The theme for this night will be Initiation and Rights of Passage, and though the story is meant for adults, children 12 and up are welcome. Prepare to be moved.

This will be a FREE event for this night only in order for us to gauge the level of interest in this community. If Jared comes back for a future event at the shop, we will charge a nominal entrance fee in order to pay him for his talent and skills. We hope you'll take advantage of the free event and try something new!

“I was inspired by traditional storytellers that I was and am fortunate enough to see and hear. They create an ambiance of magic and depth while bringing up real life topics through old relatable and time tested tales. Putting the challenges and triumphs of life and death into an animated experience with others that is both personal and collective. I consider it an honor to bring story and hope that it offers some of that magic and depth to others; something that seems so necessary in today’s current cultural climate.” ~ Jared Anderson
