A Divine Hand of Dignifying Grace

<<First Name>>,

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As Friends, we advocate for peace and nonviolence, expressed in everything from our attitudes toward war and global conflict to how we speak to our loved ones.

While some violence is obvious and quickly addressed, some violence is hidden and ignored. In faithfulness to our spiritual tradition, we must call such violence out of the dark and into the light—to condemn it but also to heal and protect people.

Rachel Jordan, our speaker for this coming Sunday, writes: "Throughout Scripture we see God’s freeing the oppressed from the oppressor, yet religious communities have been slow to apply this in relation to domestic violence survivors. As a community of Friends, we can choose to respond to survivors by extending a 'divine hand of dignifying grace.'"

Please join us this Sunday to hear from Rachel during worship. And, if you can, please stay for an important domestic violence training workshop after worship (details below).

Text of the Week

Luke 4:16-20 (NRSV)

16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

CFC Book Discussion Group (Fresh Bread)

Tonight, 7pm in Matt's Office

We will discuss chapters 12 & 13 & "Coda."

This concludes our discussion of Rohr's book. We'll take next week off.

Next Round of CFC Book Discussion Group begins Nov 7

We will be discussing Matt's book, The Way to Love. Click HERE to order from Amazon. You can also purchase directly from Matt (at a discounted rate).

The Way to Love offers a hopeful vision of what it might look like to more deliberately cultivate and embody the love of God in our relationships and world.

"A timely reminder of the importance of virtue, which is always the first quality jettisoned when the Church begins to flounder. Read this prophetic book. Study it in your church. Discuss it with your friends. Absorb its message of hope, love, and justice. And be made new!"

--Phil Gulley, author of If The Church Were Christian
