Visiting Inga's Trail

Back in mid-October, some of our Board Members had the privilege of hiking the Inga VanNynatten Memorial Trail with Inga's sisters, Erika and Jill, who were visiting from Atlanta and Denver, respectively. We were treated to wonderful stories from these two adventurous women.

Inga’s Trail starts in the District Park, at 6701 Lakewood, just past the volleyball court. Look for a kiosk with a trail map. Just beyond this starting point, you will see commemorative signage on a rock, and a bench in an area that overlooks the wagon tracks in the creek. Below this spot, for the better part of the year, water trickles continuously from limestone seeps. It’s the perfect auditory accompaniment.

If you have ever hiked the trail at Bull Creek and wondered, "Who is Inga?", as she is pictured on the trail maps with her dalmatian, Samantha, take a minute to read this remembrance written by her family that we published in 2004. http://www.bullcreek.net/inga.html

“Inga was always a fighter, and never wanted to be known as ‘the cancer patient.’ Many of her colleagues and most of her acquaintances never even knew she was sick, and she wanted to keep it that way. When she had reconstructive surgery, the scars were planned to fit underneath her bikini bathing suit. Doctor's appointments were necessary and took a lot of Inga's time and energy, but if she could rearrange them around her salsa lessons or work commitments she would.

“She always lived life to the fullest, enjoying every moment. Some of her favorite memories that she wrote in her journal include: 'Seeing my first moose along the Snake River,' 'Crying on my best friend's shoulder and then going out dancing,' 'eating sun-warmed raspberries in the fields of Montana,' 'Walking in a fresh snowfall at dawn in perfect silence.' Inga crammed a lot of living into 30 years. She will be greatly missed by the many whose hearts & minds she touched.”
