Utah Beer News | October 2018

New & Noteworthy.

Tim Haran | Utah Beer NewsIt looks as if two new Utah breweries will open their doors in October.

Policy Kings Brewery, in Cedar City, started selling beer on Oct. 16. And T.F. Brewing, in Salt Lake's Granary District, is scheduled to pour its first pints on Oct. 26.

Cheers and congratulations to Utah's newest breweries. I can't wait to try your beers.

In addition, an existing brewery — Shades of Pale Brewing Co. — recently underwent a rebrand. With it, the South Salt Lake brewery, founded in 2010, unveiled new labels, marketing materials and, yes, a new name.

It will be known simply as Shades Brewing, which isn't so different from how everyone refers to it anyway, chief marketing officer Dave Murray explains.

But there's more to it than that. You can read the entire article and listen to a podcast episode recorded in the Shades Brewing barrel room.

Our cups runneth over in this month's dispatch. Here are some quick links:

  • GABF 2018: Last newsletter, I mentioned I was on my way to The Great American Beer Festival. Well, it happened. Read all about it, and make special note of the two Utah breweries that brought home coveted Gold medals.
  • Craft Beer Education: We chatted with Purgatory bar manager and craft beer educator Eric Meyer for an article and podcast episode.
  • Tastings: We shared some tasting notes from recent travels to Portland and Denver.
  • And so much more!
As I write, I’m sipping a Coconut Stout from Kiitos Brewing. How about you?

Beer News & Notes

Here are a few beer-y stories I've read over the last month:
  • Utah's Lagoon amusement park announces plans to open a biergarten in 2019.
  • Climate change = beer shortage? Some researchers think so.
  • Neither the Brewers nor the Rockies advanced to the World Series. But the two teams — each hailing from notorious beer cities— did have some fun during their divisional series.

Shades Brewing: Unveils New Branding

Shades Brewing: New Name, New Branding
Shades Brewing is going all-in to better leverage what it believes to be strong name recognition and brand equity. But there's more to the move than simply lopping off half the name.

BONUS: Listen to Shades Brewing Founder Trent Fargher talk about what's in store for the award-winning Kveik golden sour ales.
