Echo Park News & Notes

The World Series is back in our neighborhood. But tickets aren't cheap. The first of three scheduled World Series home games against the Boston Red Sox takes place on Friday Oct. 26. The cheapest ticket? $521 as of Wednesday for a top deck seat. Something a little nicer? A pair of seats on the same day in the prime Dugout Club, with a close-up view of the field between home and first base, runs about $12,500. That fee delivers "an all-inclusive experience," including access to the club's martini lounge and a high-end buffet with restaurant-style seating. For those prices you could buy a car instead.

Speaking of the World Series .... Plan ahead for thousands of fans -- and their cars -- to pour through the neighborhood for as many as three World Series games. The games on Friday and Saturday are scheduled to begin at 5:09 pm. A possible third game (if needed) will start at 5:15 pm on Sunday. Allow extra time to get around, and good luck finding a seat at a local watering hole to watch the game with neighbors. Go Dodgers!

What's going on at Echo Park Village? Curbed asks the question in light of the several spaces that remain available at the dining and retail complex on Glendale Boulevard, north of Beverly. A wine bar, a pizzeria and a yoga studio have signed up for spaces at the complex, which is still under renovation. But at least four spaces remained unleased, Curbed said.

Leanne Ford, star of HGTV’s “Restored by the Fords,” is selling a 1911 cabin in Elysian Heights once owned by Clara Kimball Young, who had her own production company, reports Curbed. Ford, in one of her signature designer touches, coated the interior in white paint, and added new plumbing, French doors, a vintage sink, a Smeg refrigerator, built-in shelving and onyx countertops. It’s up for sale for $995,000 – $195,000 over what she paid for it two years ago.

Echo Park boba spot Hey Hey is one of Los Angeles’ bestLos Angeles Magazine reports. Owner Christopher Kwok has raised the boba bar by offering hand-crafted drinks made of freshly brewed teas and homemade ingredients. No powder mixes found here. Kwok, a former corporate consultant, spent more three years preparing to open the business. Hey Hey is at 1555 W. Sunset Blvd.

Mayor Eric Garcetti nominated Cecilia Cabello of Echo Park to replace Los Feliz resident Heather Repenning on the Los Angeles Board of Public Works. Repenning is stepping down to run for the Los Angeles Unified board of education. Both previously served on Garcetti's staff. Most recently, Cabello was chief of staff for City Controller Ron Galperin. The board oversees the city's bureaus of sanitation, lighting, street services, engineering and contract administration. While the board is pretty low profile, its five-members -- each of whom makes more than $160,000 -- play a big role in making sure operations like the city's once troubled recycling program run smoothly. Cabello's appointment still needs to be confirmed by the City Council.

Wondering what 13th District Councilman Mitch O'Farrell -- who represents  Echo Park and Elysian Heights -- looked like in 1991? Here you go!

Speaking of O'Farrell, the councilman says he is spearheading a ‘‘Plastic Straws on Request” initiative, with the ultimate goal of phasing out single-use plastic straws in the city altogether by 2021. San Francisco has already signed rules banning plastic straws, and, earlier this year, Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation limiting their use at restaurants.

A tour helicopter made an emergency landing in the Dodger Stadium parking lot after a malfunction was detected, The Eastsider said. No injuries were reported. Apparently that sort of thing happens every so often.
