The only other new release is from a little band called The Kinks. Yes them!  It's been 50 years since one of the greatest records in recorded history was released, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, and it's high time for a box-set devoted to the record. New Music Reviews

The Kinks -  Are The Village Green Preservation Society Box Set + LP
(Sanctuary / Abkco)

An essential album through and through, Village Green Preservation Society was anything but a hit in its day. Though it was released the same day as The Beatles (White Album), it failed to give the band the chart success that they were accustomed to in the mid 60’s. Instead, it got unanimously positive reviews in the UK and US press and the seeds were planted for a cult following in 1968. The LP was driven by Ray Davies conceptual approach to songwriting with him focusing on childhood memories, nature, neighborhoods and a more simple approach to life. Davies’ songs were all instant classics and there was every reason to believe it would be a commercial success. It wasn’t, neither here or in the UK, and by 1969 the band was evolving as original bassist Pete Quaife left the group and work would begin on their next LP Arthur.
But 50 years later, TKATVGPS is a revered piece of work. And so we now have an exhaustive boxset to further solidify its genius.
Digesting this box is a pleasure, plain and simple. The photo and interview / essay book has tons of nuggets in it and the reproductions of all the sleeves must have been painstaking to say the least. The remaster sounds warm yet vibrant with plenty of new detail shining through. I’m still digging into the differences and A/B’ing the Mono and Stereo pressings but so far the new 2018 remaster has given this timeless classic new life. Plenty of amazing demos such as the acoustic “Days,” “Picture Book” and brand new track “Time Song.” This is not to be missed. (Dom)

LEE SAYS!
Hello dear readers, long time no recommendations...
Thomas Fehlmann - Los Lagos" 2LP (Kompakt) LISTEN
Inland & Julian Charriere - An Invitation To Disappear 2LP (A-TON) LISTEN

Ron Morelli - Disappearer 2LP (Hospital Productions) LISTEN
Koray Kantarcioglu - Loopworks LP (Discrepant) LISTEN

It seems like it's been getting harder & harder of late to find imaginative, interesting and invigorating techno tuneage.  Veteran musician (61 years young!) Fehlmann delivers on all counts & hits it harder than his status as regular collaborator with The Orb would lead you to believe.  Inland's debut album is a revelation!  The IDM / techno tag just doesn't do this monumental release justice.  This has my highest recommendation.  A joyous journey to various techno territories with numerous off-the-beaten-track tangents that surprise along the way. Morelli, (perhaps best known as L.I.E.S. label boss), delivers his third album, a super-solid, industrial-weight monster that touches upon everything from cold stripped back electronics, to 1990s Hague scum techno, to grim passages reminiscent of early tape minimalists.  In my opinion, by far the best thing he's done. Loopworks brings together Koray's work composed of samples taken from Turkish records released in the 60's & 70's.  It's an ambient adventure that was previously only available as a ltd ed cassette (100 copies) but caught the ear of Rashad Becker & Discrepant for this reissue on vinyl.  Several comparisons have been (justly) made to the 'haunted ballrooms' of The Caretaker but to my ears, the under-appreciated El Mahdy Jr is a more valid reference point.  Well worth investigating.

Ursula Bogner - Recordings 1969-1988 (2018 Remaster) (Faitiche) LISTEN
OK, so I'll admit that this is something of a novelty item & isn't for everyone, but I've become very enamored by this label & the amazing works of label-boss Jan Jelinek.  This recording is all bleeps & bloops inna BBC Radiophonic Workshop kinda stylee but it's the incredible & intriguing back-story that's worth repeating here.

Mary Jane Leach - (f)lute songs LP (Modern Love) LISTEN
I just recently became aware of MJL via her minimal and mesmerizing Pipe Dreams LP on Blume, which featured a side of work for four bass clarinets, and a side for church organ. Avant garde but accessible.  This time around there's four pieces for flute and voice featuring noted Roman flutist Manuel Zurria.  Pastoral.  Passionate.  Very pleasing.

Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - Red Ants Genesis 2LP (Hospital Productions) LISTEN
For reasons that I'll not go into here (& before I actually heard this LP) I was worried that my beloved RSE might be in danger of losing it.  However, any fears were dispelled within moments of being ensnared & engulfed in the primordial ooze of first track, "Red Ants (Mics Mix)". Bringing on board collaborators (Low Jack and Equiknoxx) has not diminished the "high volume microphone ambience of synthetic field ecologies and red herbs live without audience." Compelling as ever, how can you resist a record that is classified by Discogs as "Abstract, Dark Ambient, Deep Techno, Field Recording, Noise, Tribal, Dancehall".  Buy or die.

William Basinski & Lawrence English -  Selva Oscura LP (Temporary Residence Ltd) LISTEN
"Two of the world's most revered contemporary sound artists collaborate on two otherworldly new works".  I could not have put it better myself.  Absolutely essential.

Heinali - Iridescent LP (Injazero) LISTEN
Oleg Shpudeiko from Kiev is Heinali, one of the true rising stars working in the broad field known as modern classical.  Once more teaming up with the quality conscious Injazero label, the results are beguiling & beautiful.  If you wanna dip your toe into this world & see what the fuss is all about then this is the perfect place to start.

Forest Drive West - Apparitions 2LP (Livity Sound) LISTEN
The Bristol, U.K., based label run by Peverelist continues to reflect both the city's history of edgy genre mutations and it's sound system legacy.  Apparitions is the debut album from the mysterious London producer known as Forest Drive West.  Innovative and intricate fusions of techno, dub & jungle.  The mix of sparse rhythm tracks contrasts heavyweight drum programming with rich & deft sound design to grand effect.

The Fall - I Am Kurious Oranj LP (Beggars Banquet) (oranj vinyl) LISTEN
30th anniversary reissue of The Fall's 11th album.  You sinners still have time to gain musical salvation by investing NOW in what will surely be the start of a deluge of reissues from THE LAST BAND WHO MATTERED !!!

Thank you for reading and listening...
