Volunteer of the Month
Casey Anderson

From PBC's volunteer coordinator, Matt Jacobs:

How did you get involved with the collective?

I was just searching for jobs and heard about it through one of my friends at church. It sounded really cool so I wanted to research it and see for myself what it was like. PBC wasn't hiring at the time but I still wanted to volunteer with them. Volunteering has really helped me feel awesome! My family is proud of me for being here.

What do you enjoy the most about the collective?

It's sharpening my skills with bikes. I enjoy working with the other volunteers and staff. I like the environment in the shop - it's peaceful. Always when I come in, it feels happy. Everybody is in a good mood. The shop staff are great teachers and are fun to work with!

Tell us more about how cycling has impacted your life.

Volunteering has made me want to fix my own bike more. It hasn't been fully functional for some time and I have been able to take my volunteer skills and use them at home. One time I got hit on my bike and didn't want to ride it for a while, but being here has made me get excited about riding again. I have two bikes, a mountain bike and a BMX bike.

What are some of your other hobbies?

Fishing on the Provo River, in Spanish Fork, and some of the cleaning up efforts at Utah Lake. I won't say the exact spots because they're secret ;) I've been married for 12 years, so my family is pretty important to me too. I just like helping people!

What would you like prospective volunteers to know about volunteering with PBC?

You guys should just give it a try. Just come and try it out - it's worth it to everyone involved! You feel good for giving back, I know the recipients feel amazing.

Bike of the Week:
Marlo Andersen's Giant Cadex CFR-3

From Marlo Andersen, a PBC Core Volunteer:

This bike is a Giant Cadex CFR-3. It has had a lot of upgrading since it was built. From my research it was originally equipped with Campagnolo hubs, brakes, shifters & derailleurs that have all been replaced. A previous owner has removed most of the paint to expose the bare aluminum tubes, and forged aluminum headstock, bottom bracket, and dropout parts, and epoxy fillets and carbon fiber main tubes. Only steel parts are axles, bearings, chain, chainrings, screws, and stem. Parts are all epoxy bonded; no welding, except maybe the steerer tube to the front fork. It was originally a deep blue, or purple which can still be seen in cracks and difficult to get to locations. It was really bare when I got it, but had been well cared for. I have added pedals, chain, saddle, computer, and taped the handlebars.

When I first saw it I said to myself, I've got to have it.

This bike was promoted by Giant as the ideal triathlon bike during it's period of manufacture (1993-1999). At 21 pounds it's a great bike that I really enjoy riding.
