Impact in Practice Award Honors NCIPH Staff Member

NCIPH Senior Data and GIS Analyst Matt Simon, MA, GISP, received the 2018 Impact in Practice Award from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health on Oct. 26 as part of the 2018 Gillings School Practicum Day celebration. The award honors faculty and staff who make a substantive impact in areas such as the delivery of services or community health, as demonstrated by strong community ties, impact of the work and contributing to improved understanding of and use of policies to improve health.

Simon was recognized for being the “go-to guy” for numerous N.C. counties for collecting high-quality survey data for community health assessments and other projects that require input from the community. In 2018 alone, he and other NCIPH staff collaborated with community partners on eight surveys, totaling more than 1,500 household interviews.

NCIPH provides a full suite of community health assessment services, including primary data collection, secondary data collection and analysis, committee facilitation, action planning and development of reports. Learn more about our services

In the Spotlight

Check out this great piece on the Carolina Community Clinic, the UNC School of Nursing's first-ever faculty practice in the state! We're very proud that NCIPH Nursing Continuing Education Specialist Jean Davidson, DNP, RN, FNP-C, is part of this project to improve access to care and mitigate health disparities between urban and rural areas. NCIPH Community Engagement Coordinator Elizabeth Thomas, MPH, led a community forum in Granville County on Oct. 25 as part of the Granville Vance Public Health 2018 community health assessment (CHA). Learn more about our CHA services.

Participants at the North Carolina Local Health Department Accreditation team-based training held in Caldwell County on Oct.18. Through AHEC support the training is offered on-site for health departments. Learn more about accreditation training.

Krystle Vinson, a scholar in the N.C. Public Health Leadership Institute (NCPHLI) program, gave a PechaKucha presentation (20 slides for 20 seconds each) about a leadership challenge at the cohort's touch point meeting on Oct. 29. Learn more about NCPHLI.

PAA/STD Training (starts Dec. 18): Apply by Nov. 9 to earn a dual certification from the NC Division of Public Health as a PAA Enhanced Role RN and an STD Enhanced Role RN to perform routine annual screening physical exams and provide STD services. See details and apply.

Accreditation 101: New AAC Training (Dec. 11): This training provides a basic overview of the accreditation process and the role of the AAC for new AACs, co-AACs and back-up AACs. See details and register.
Breastfeeding Supplies Competency Training (starts Jan. 7): Strengthen knowledge of the use and care of breastfeeding supplies and other important topics to teach WIC Program participants.

Child Health Training Program (starts Jan. 10): The course focus is on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Bright Futures evidence-based recommendations as the clinical framework. The course addresses all required components of the Health Check screening visit, focusing on the comprehensive pediatric history and the complete physical assessment. There is a strong emphasis on identification of problems, assuring appropriate consultation, referral and/or treatment of identified problems, along with documentation to support quality of care and billing requirements. Pediatric Nutrition Course, Module 1: Nutrition Assessment (starts Jan. 28): Improve skills in the area of nutrition assessment and build competence in evaluating indicators of nutritional status within the pediatric population.See details and apply.

Principles and Practices of Public Health Nursing (starts March 25): This course is for RNs working in public health departments to address core public health nursing function. The spring course will run from March 25-May 1, 2019 with the in-person session April 15-17 in Chapel Hill. Registration opens January 2019. See details.
