Realized Recognition
We’re excited to celebrate WLA’s recognition of Bill Milton with the first annual Land and Livelihoods award!  Bill has been an essential advocate of watershed conservation in the Musselshell Watershed and an important past board chair of the Montana Watershed Coordination Council.

Congrats, Bill!

Celebrating Our Stories
It was great to see you all at our 2018 Watershed Symposium: "Advancing Conservation through Effective Communication." Over the week, we learned a ton about communicating the impacts of our community-based watershed work. We also celebrated the stories we're already sharing - namely, our Watershed Stories Campaign!

Check out our new Watershed Stories web page to learn more about the impact of our efforts on local people and communities, from ranchers to beer brewers, land managers to teachers, and everyone in between.

P.S. We're working hard to compile an archive of all the insightful workshops we participated in during the Symposium. Stay tuned to WSN for details!
Wildfire and Water
Above is a picture of Cameron Falls in Waterton Lakes National Park (Alberta) running black with ash and other debris from fires in 2017. While fire can have benefits to streams, the increased intensity and frequency of fires will cause the negative effects to outweigh benefits. This challenge is discussed in length in this article from YaleEnvironment360 with examples from around the world. "...at some point in the future, 100 percent of the communities that draw their water from forested watersheds are going to face the challenge of dealing with water that has been degraded by fire." -Fernando Rosario-Ortiz, University of Colorado
