Ad claims like “helps with Cancer”, “raises IQ […] 15 to 20 points”, and “dramatic or full recovery [from Traumatic Brain Injury]” are sure to catch consumer’s attention - especially those looking for help - but what are the costs of unsubstantiated claims? BBB was founded over 100 years ago to pursue truth in advertising by combatting “snake oil” and deceptive trends in America’s advertising industry. Flash forward to 2018 and consumers are still overwhelmed by deceptive claims. Too many companies are making a habit of being the first to market with impressively flashy claims that get great SEO, but fall flat on their faces when it comes time to proving their efficacy.

Jimmy Asa heads BBB|NCTX’s Ad Review Department and examines two companies, LearningRx & RxHomeo, which were challenged by BBB for their misleading ad claims. Since taking over BBB|NCTX’s Ad Review Department in 2016, Jimmy’s team has achieved a 95% favorable case closure rate. In 2017, Jimmy and his team planned, presented, and hosted BBB|NCTX’s second Ad Review Boot Camp, which trained BBB professionals from the US and Canada on the more difficult complexities when challenging ad claims. BBB|NCTX’s Ad Review Department has been recognized internationally as the Best Ad Review Department consecutively for the past five years by receiving the Outstanding Bureau Award, the last two of which were authored by Jimmy. He regularly co-hosts and presents casework to the North Texas Consumer Fraud Task Force, which is comprised of representatives from the FTC, Texas AG’s Office, the USPIS, the Texas D, the Department of Education, and several other regulatory agencies.
