Last Saturday was a busy day at South Napa Century Center. The market was celebrating Halloween and our new neighbor, Cream Napa was giving away ice cream sandwiches as part of their grand opening. It's tough competing with free ice cream sandwiches but we did pretty well.

The market's staff was dressed for Halloween and will be again tomorrow. Yesterday we had a farmer, a witch, a ringmaster complete with a whip and a policeman that looked like he had escaped from the Village People.

A number of vendors were in costume with my favorite being Jeff from Rollz Baking and his pirate costume complete with a parrot on his shoulder.

Some of our littlest customers took advantage of our photo area complete with bales of straw, corn shocks and, of course, pumpkins. Tomorrow we will be giving away the pumpkins so if you don't already have one stop by and you may be a lucky winner.

Last week we had Food Day at the market, this week it was Halloween at the market and next Saturday is the Give!Guide at the Napa Farmers Market. There's always something going on at the market.

Food Days: Feeding Napa
Food Day Tuesday Update
The Napa Farmers Market was bustling with extra energy on Tuesday, Oct. 23! We welcomed about 180 students with their enthusiastic questions, including:
  • 15 Snow Elementary K - 2nd Grade Special Education students
  • 25 Shearer Elementary Kindergartens
  • 80 Shearer Elementary 2nd Graders
  • 60 Harvest Middle School 6th, 7th and 8th Graders
Field trips are always a welcome addition to the Napa Farmers Market. We want students to have fun while learning about where their food comes from and share stories at home, encouraging the whole family to come back!

If you would like to schedule a school field trip, email Cara Mae at educationnfm@gmail.com. Limited bus grant scholarships are available from the Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County!
Something spooky this way comes... Halloween is almost here... it's time for our annual Haunted Market!

Recipe of the Week
Monte Cristo Sandwich with Aioli
by Chef Terry Letson of Fume Bistro

An easy Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe layered with ham, turkey, and Swiss, then battered and fried.

Dust with powdered sugar for the ultimate breakfast sandwich...
Or breakfast for dinner!!

Ingredients for Six Sandwiches

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 6 tablespoons garlic aioli (or mayonnaise of your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 12 slices sour dough or brioche bread
  • 18 thin slices Swiss cheese or Guryere cheese
  • 12 thin slices ham (todays ham- Contimo molasses brined ham)
  • 12 thin slices turkey (todays turkey-Willy Bird smoked turkey)
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Raspberry jam (or your flavor of choice)
Sandwich Directions
  1. Whisk together eggs, cream, sugar, salt, dry mustard, and cayenne in shallow dish until combined. Stir aioli and Dijon mustard together in a small bowl.
  2. Spread 1 teaspoon mayo mixture on 1 side of each slice of bread. Layer slices of cheese, ham, and turkey over aioli on 6 slices of bread.
  3. Repeat with the second layer of cheese, ham, and turkey. Add final layer of cheese and top with remaining bread, with aioli side facing cheese, lightly press down on sandwiches.
  4. Add oil into medium size sauté pan, and heat.  Meanwhile, using 2 hands, coat each sandwich with egg mixture and transfer to large plate.
  5. Sauté until golden brown on both sides, 4 to 5 minutes per side, using spatula to flip. Remove from the pan, (keep warm in the oven until all sandwiches are ready) sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve with jam.

Ingredients for Roasted Garlic Aioli

  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 T roasted garlic
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt plus more T.T.
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Aioli Directions

  1. Place garlic, salt, yolks, and balsamic in a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse on and off for 15-20 seconds.
  2. Turn on and begin adding the olive oil in a thin stream. If it becomes too thick, thin it out with some room-temperature water and continue until you have used all the oil.
  3. Taste and adjust salt and pepper
  4. Store covered in the refrigerator up to a week
CalFresh Market Match Program
The Napa Farmers Market wants our fresh, local and farm-direct produce to be affordable for all people in Napa.

To help get more into the hands of our low-income neighbors, we hae  a token-matching program for all CalFresh participants that provides them with a dollar-for-dollar match to spend with market vendors.
How does the Market Match program work?
  1. Shoppers bring their EBT card to the Information Booth
  2. Market staff swipes the EBT card to charge the dollar amount requested by the shopper
  3. Market staff gives double the dollar amount change in tokens to spend on:
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meats, fish, and poultry
  • Dairy products
  • Breads and cereals
  • Seeds and plants that produce food
  • Hot foods cannot be purchased using CalFresh benefits
For more information on the Market Match program, visit our website.
Green Market Program
  • Fill your water bottle at our Free Hydration Station Water Bar!
  • Buy reusable water and hot liquid bottles (as well as market bags!) at cost at the Information Station
  • Bring in 10 single-use plastic produce bags and we’ll give you 1 reusable mesh produce bag
  • Bring your berry baskets to our Green Market booth and we will make sure they are reused

About Napa Farmers Market
Napa Farmers Market is a California Certified Farmers Market and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community resource that draws hundreds of shoppers and visitors each market day. Vendors include many local fruit, vegetable and flower growers (some organic); fresh seafood and meat merchants; food purveyors offering coffee, baked goods, pupusas and other ready-to-eat fare; plus, artisanal pottery, jewelry and other hand-crafted wares. Educational kids’ activities, chef demos and nonprofit-organization booths add to the enriching, multicultural shopping experience at the market. The market also participates in the Market Match program, doubling the value of CalFresh benefits purchasing power for all eligible food products.
