This year we are focusing on fundamental chanted prayers. You might have learned the Latin text of the Gloria Patri (the Glory Be) when you studied the Angelus, which was September's chant. (We are learning a different setting this month.) In addition, this month includes the Kyrie, which has simple words to learn, but there are plenty of settings to choose from.  If you are very familiar with the Mass of the Angels, feel free to learn another.

Lesson Plans

Week 1

  1. Print Kyrie PDF download  found on the Institute of Christ the King

  2. Print Gloria Patri PDF found on the Institute of Christ the King

  3. Listen to the Kyrie a few times each day and follow along with the text/PDF handout.
Alternate recording that follows the musical notation.
We are learning Mass VIII De Angelis, but you can choose a different setting from the CCWatershed Kyriale.

  4. Tips:  First, speak one phrase, and have your kids repeat it back to you. This is the beginning of memorizing and getting used to the words. Go at your child's pace. Listen to the chant again. Follow along and try to sing with the video.

Week 2

  1. Finish learning the melody of the Kyrie if you need to.  Listen here. Or here.

  2. Begin copywork & illustrations to aid meditating on the text. Use this to review the Gloria Patri, too.

  3. Read a short history of the use of Greek in the Mass.

Week 3

  1. The focus is now on the Gloria Patri.  Print the Gloria Patri PDF found on the Institute of Christ the King. We are learning number VII.

  2. Use this pronunciation guide it that's helpful.

  3. Listen and follow along. The Gloria Patri starts at 0:54 in the video. (P.S. We aren’t learning the Asperges, yet, but it’s one of my favorites.)

  4. Memorize what you can; maybe the first half of the prayer.

  5. Finish copywork & verse illustrations.

Week 4

  1. Solidify memorization and keep singing

  2. Teens/Adults: Watch the 3rd episode of On a Sacred Note "The Motet" from CatholicTV.org

  3. Children: Listen again to the Litany of Saints
