Field Hockey

Field Hockey and Hockey Victoria

Field Hockey, commonly known as Hockey in most countries is an Olympic team-based sport. Traditionally played with 11 players per team on grass, synthetic turf, or indoors on floorboards. Hockey is a welcoming, safe and inclusive sport which can be played by males and females of all ages and abilities. Competitions or programs are available for participants aged 5 through to 80.

Hockey Victoria (HV) is the governing body for the sport of field hockey in Victoria. It is responsible for the administration of the sport within Victoria including intrastate competitions, high performance pathways, community development and engagement, as well as the financial position of the sport. HV’s vision is to grow, diversify, unite and excel the sport of Hockey in Victoria.

HV recognises the importance of engaging a diverse community in growing participation, as well as valuing inclusivity and understanding the social responsibilities sport has in providing opportunities for all. HV has recently taken the step of developing new social, modified formats of the game as a way to meet the changing needs of consumers. These include the following programs.

Hockey Sixers

It's a fast, fun, free-flowing and social version of hockey played on a smaller field, with 6 players on each team.

J-Ball

J-Ball is a social version of hockey developed by Hockey Victoria in partnership with VicHealth. It has been designed in a way that it can be played by anyone. It is targeted for those over the age of 18. It is played with a plastic light weight stick and ball and aimed at those who have never played hockey before.

Current AAA Programs

AAA Hockey Sixers

Hockey Victoria is piloting their very first AAA Hockey Sixers program in Footscray which started on October 15th. But it's not too late to join if you'd like to get involved.

The program is tailored to promote a sense of belonging, fun and friendship for people with a disability, while enabling them to improve their motor and social skills in an inclusive environment.

AAA Hockey Sixers is a modified hockey program available to participants with a disability (intellectual, physical, and/or sensory disabilities). It is played with six players on each team, on a smaller, free flowing field which is surrounded by small padded boards.
