KnitCandela

A five-tonne concrete shell created using 50kg of digitally knitted formwork, and some balloons.

A highly geometric shell pavilion has been built as a collaboration between NCCR researchers, Zaha Hadid Architects Computation and Design Group (ZHCODE), and Architecture Extrapolated (R-Ex). The computationally designed shell’s formwork is a knitted textile supported by a steel cable-net, stiffened with specialised mortar, then coated with structural concrete. The structure, called KnitCandela, on exhibition in Mexico City, is an homage to Spanish-Mexican architect Felix Candela (1910–1997), and marks the first application of an innovation supported by this NCCR executed at full architectural scale.
