The President’s Message

November is such a monochromatic month. I have often thought of taking a plein air painting class in November using only varying shades of grey. We can observe nature’s life-lessons too in November as barren trees bend with the wind, sleet, and early snow, accepting and enduring as winter rolls in.
Many of us welcome this time of settling in as a chance to finish projects, begin new art challenges, or just slow to a less hectic pace. The holidays, though, loom large and our holiday sale will add excitement to the fall and early winter.
Thanksgiving, our November holiday, is always a time for gathering and sharing our favorite recipes. I recently tasted a “pumpkin” pie that was better than most. I will share the recipe in hopes that you will try it and love it too.

ACORN SQUASH PIE
2 cups squash                                       1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/3 cup honey or brown sugar               1/8 tsp salt
2 large eggs, separated                         1 can Eagle Brand Condensed CARMEL
1 tsp cinnamon
flavored milk (do not substitute!)
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
Unbaked pie crust of choice

Bake acorn squash at 350 until soft (cut in half, scoop out seeds, coat with olive oil, and place cut side down on a baking sheet also coated with oil. Takes about an hour.) When squash is cool scoop out two cups and beat until creamy. Add spices, salt, two egg yolks, and carmel flavored condensed milk. After beating together, taste for sweetness to decide if you want to add the honey or brown sugar or leave out. Beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form and then fold into squash mixture. Pour into pie shell. Bake 425 for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 for 30 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. I’m going to try this by baking pie pumpkins too. Happy sampling!!

See you November 1!!

You may also bring items you have purchased from another Guild member as well as your own work.  PLEASE include an inventory list of items you are bringing and/or put your name on each item to help with the returning of items. Items will be returned at the December potluck and the January meeting unless other arrangements are made.  If enough items are brought in we will try to reserve the Community Ed building showcase also.  This is a great way to entice people to our sale and “showcase” the diverse talents of our wonderful fiber artists.  Any questions, call Annette Shaffer at 517-548-2335 or email annette@annieswoolworks.com

Meeting Minutes October 4th, 2018

The meeting was called to order at 6:32PM. 44 people were present.
Kathy Stahl repeated our goal of getting to know each other better. The ice breaker consisted of counting off by 5s at each table, rearranging ourselves by # called and then drawing a question about ourselves from an envelope and finally answering  that question with our new tablemates. Holiday sale information was discussed, including signup sheets for sellers, set up schedules, prop requests, and publicity.  Nov 29 from 9AM to 4PM will be set up time. An explanation of the sales tags was explained. Small tags are for small items. Large tags for jewelry and the medium tags for anything you wear or that needs a fiber content listed. Bonnie Janssen reminded us that only people who have paid their $25 dues by Oct 31 are allowed to participate in the Holiday Sale. December 13 will be the night of the Holiday potluck at Sandy Howe’s house in Brighton. Attendees are to bring a small homemade ornament or a small holiday themed item wrapped up for an exchange. Debbie Nachtegall informed us of a November workshop (Embellishing with Sulky Threads) to be conducted in our normal meeting room on Friday, November 9 from 2-6 PM.  15 people are needed to sign up. Cost is $30.00 per person plus a $25 per person kit fee.  This program will be presented by a Sulky® national educator.  A supply list will be posted on the webpage. Kathy Amerman reviewed last year’s budget and the current year’s budget.  Last year a 15% fee of holiday sales was collected. Last spring that fee was reduced to 10%.  This year the holiday fee will be 10%. The budget was approved. Publicity reminded us to bring items for the Hartland Showcase next month.  Those items will not be available for sale in the display case or at the Holiday Sales. The following passage from last month’s published minutes was amended to read: “Discussion regarding advertising for the winter and spring sales. This discussionwas tabled until next time.  This may be a matter for the publicity team to discuss.” It formerly read: “Discussion regarding advertising for the winter and spring sales. Votewas tabled until next time. This may be a matter for the publicity team to discuss.” We are still looking for a representative to the Michigan League of Handweavers. We spent some time with our usual show and tell of member’s items. The meeting was adjourned at 8PM.  The night’s presentation followed. Cindy Maxwell presented a selection of bobbin laces and their method of construction as well as information on other types of laces. Our November meeting will be about the tools used in jewelry making and how they are used.

Treasurer Bonnie Janssen reports a current balance in the
BSWFG treasury of $6002.35!
Thank you for the donations to Women With A Mission (WWAM).  Your items will be added to our monthly WWAM Marketplace and sold to help raise funds for MAP, Michigan Abolitionist Project, preventing modern slavery though education and awareness ( www.michiganabolitionistproject.org).  We are still accepting items for the Marketplace.  If interesting in donating your handmade items please see Pam McCormick or email with questions at epifine@gmail.com.
