Three-way fight for Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup

The 2018 Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup goes down to the wire at South Dakota in Guyana next month (November 10/11), with three drivers still capable of capturing the inaugural regional title. Points leader Stuart Maloney and his brother and fellow SR3 Cup veteran Mark are split by teenage newcomer Isa Deen (Trinidad & Tobago), with a spread of just 27 points from first to third and 75 on offer at the final.

These three have won seven of the nine races between them, with the fourth winner, T&T’s Kristian Boodoosingh, also in with a mathematical chance of the crown, although success would require huge bad luck for the others. Extra spice will be added to the final three races of the season with the introduction of prize money for the first time, also the return to his home circuit of 2017 SR3 Cup Winter Champion Kristian Jeffrey, fresh from finishing fourth in the UK Radical Challenge Championship (pictured leading Bushy Park SR3 Cup race-winner Brian Caudwell at Rockingham).

At the final round, the regional series for Suzuki-powered Radical sports-racers will be supported by Suzuki Guyana with a US$1,000 prize fund; the weekend’s SR3 Cup Champion Driver – the racer who scores most points across the three races – will receive a cheque for US$750, while the driver who sets the fastest lap across the three races will win US$250. The local importer will also provide the organising Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) with a Suzuki Baleno as a Pace Car for all of the weekend’s race programme, while a representative will present the SR3 Cup awards at the Prizegiving.

Luke Bhola makes for three racers from T&T on the grid for the final round, with Sean Maloney joining brothers Stuart and Mark to make up a Barbados trio, while Jeffrey will be joined to represent Guyana by Mark Vieira and Calvin Ming, both of whom are also previous SR3 Cup race-winners.

Team Barbados heads for CMRC finale in Guyana

Reigning Group Champions Mark Maloney and Mark Thompson head for the final round of the 2018 Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) at South Dakota in Guyana next month (November 10/11) determined to keep Team Barbados in the fight for Country Championship points. Maloney (Mazda RX-3) will compete in Group 4, while Thompson will race in Gp2, alongside his brother Kurt in a pair of Honda Civics.

Following the Williams Digicel International Race Meet at Bushy Park, Barbados moved from fourth to second in the Country standings with 618 points; while there is no chance of catching Trinidad & Tobago – with 1,299 points, the twin island state is a shoo-in for a third consecutive title – there is a realistic chance of staying second, ahead of Jamaica (526), although Guyana will aim to build significantly on its total of 196 at home. After Barbados arrived at last year’s final in second place, the home team overhauled their total to finish second by just three points, but the margin this year is bigger.

In individual terms, Maloney is currently fourth in Gp4, 52 points behind leader Mark Vieira of Guyana (RX-8); between them are Vieira’s fellow-countryman Andrew King and Quinian Lall of Team CAMS (Mazda Miata), who has not been seen since round one in Jamaica. While Maloney faces an uphill struggle to unseat Vieira in Gp4, he should still come home with the new Gp5 title following five races run in Jamaica and T&T.

Although Mark Thompson has an outside chance of claiming the Gp2 crown, it would need enormous bad luck for T&T’s Marc Gill (Civic), the only non-Bajan to have won Gp2, in 2015, and current points leader; there is a chance for him to move from fourth, however, as the other T&T Civics of Justin Sanguinette and Luke Bhola are absent.

Mallalieu and Maloney meet on home turf

Reigning Barbados Karting Association (BKA) Junior Champion Adam Mallalieu and former BKA Champion Zane Maloney, who have been representing Barbados in international competition this season, were ‘back home’ at Bushy Park for the BKA’s seventh race meet of the season on October 6. Mallalieu, who has been competing in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy – the first driver from the Caribbean to do so – is leading the BKA’s Senior Championship this year, and added a further three race wins to his total, while Maloney was hampered by mechanical issues.

Behind Mallalieu, Benjamin Moore finished second twice and third once in the Easykart 125cc Lights, with Graham Bradshaw (third twice) and Graeme Finlayson (second once) sharing the other podium places. Colin Bradshaw headed Logan Stollmeyer home in the first two Easykart 60cc Cadet races, but Stollmeyer turned the tables on Bradshaw in the final race, also clocking the fastest Cadet lap of the day; Daniel Ullyett finished third each time, while Calem Maloney was the three-time winner in Easykart 100cc Juniors, ahead of Kayleigh Catwell.

• the BimmaCup is coming to Bushy Park next month to give a group of its regional competitors the chance to experience a ‘conventional circuit’. BPCI Operations Manager Amy Willis says: “We’re delighted to welcome the Vaucluse Raceway Motor Sports Club (VRMSC) to Bushy Park, as it means that we will now have hosted events organised by six out of the seven Member Clubs of the Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF), which is close to seeing our vision of hosting all BMF clubs come to reality.”

• as we draw closer to Christmas, you will almost certainly either be planning a party yourself, or know someone who is. So, what about Bushy Park? Apart from hosting your party in the unique surroundings of an International race track, our USPs include ample parking, the confidence of operating in a secure facility and space for parties of up to 1,500 guests. Oh, and you can include our Driving Experiences, if you like. If you want to do something special over the holiday period, call us on 537-1360 or e-mail info@bushyparkbarbados.com . . .

• you saw him here first! When he was one of the star turns at last year’s Barbados Festival of Speed at the age of 19, perhaps even the recently-crowned 2017 GP3 Series Champion, Brit George Russell, did not expect to join the Formula 1 grid as early as 2019 . . . but he’ll be doing just that, having been signed by Williams. With six wins under his belt, he leads this year’s FIA Formula 2 Championship (ahead of the final round in Abu Dhabi), a campaign he has intertwined with F1 duties for Mercedes and Force India. Depending on the fate of fellow Mercedes Junior Esteban Ocon, there could be four drivers on next year’s F1 grid who have driven at Bushy Park, as Russell joins four-time (watch this space!) World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Haas driver Romain Grosjean, who competed in the 2014 Race of Champions along with Ocon . . .

• keep an eye on our social media platforms for further news of the Massy United Insurance Driving Skills Academy, too. Great strides have been made in recent weeks, as we work to create some new tailor-made programmes to offer drivers and potential drivers of all ages. Watch this space . . .

• visitors approaching Bushy Park from the south will have noticed an improvement in the roadway to the Pit Gate, which has been graded and resurfaced in recent weeks. We hope you all approve . . .

• are you interested in advertising your brand or company at Bushy Park Barbados? We now have available high-quality 2.5ft x 13ft heavy vinyl banners, designed to withstand the elements. Enjoy fantastic exposure and advertising value for just Bds$1,000.00 & VAT for a whole year.
