October 2018

Dear <<First Name>>,

We are finally approaching fall’s cooler temperatures and changing leaves may be right around the corner. It’s always so much fun to hear the happy squeals of neighborhood kids as they jump in the leaf piles. What a delight to see the beautiful orange, red, and yellow colors that homeowners use to decorate their front doors this time of year.

As the holiday season approaches, most likely you will be decorating your front entry door for many different occasions. It is time to consider whether or not your door itself feels welcoming to your family and friends. Has your wood entry door become stained and faded, or your steel entry door scratched and dented? Now is the time to consider replacing that door. Below we list several current trends that can help make your front entrance outstanding!

You’re going to love our third episode about the Marietta Lake House Addition. This time we’re going inside the house and showing you photos of the upper level interior with details based on the Gustav Stickley style from the Arts & Crafts movement. Get ready to be amazed!

Enjoy the fall season!

Sincerely,

Marietta Lake House Transformed | Part 3

Redesigned Upper Level Interior

Previously, we featured the dock and boathouse and home exterior of the gorgeous lake house project that our Atlanta Design & Build team recently completed. Moving inside the home this month, you will get to experience the amazing redesign of the upper level interior. Our clients envisioned wide-open spaces using beautiful craftsmanship, natural materials and simple lines modeled after Gustav Stickley and the Arts & Crafts movement. They desired intricately designed cabinetry, furniture, and fabrics that harkened back to the day when honest, genuine craftsmanship was trendsetting.

Our clients looked to Atlanta Design & Build to come up with some ideas and solutions that would open up the interior space in their home, bringing in lots of light and breathtaking views. “The home’s existing upstairs interior desperately needed updating—it was frozen back in a 1970s-1980s style,” commented Dale Contant, ADB President “The space felt dark, closed in, and the homeowners could not take advantage of the beautiful views of the lake.”

You'll enjoy comparing the before and after photos of this portion, it's incredible! Follow the link to read more about this part of the project as well.

In our November HOMEStyles Online issue, we will venture inside the terrace level of this amazing renovation and describe the interior redesign with photos for your enjoyment and inspiration.

ADB’s Steven Roberts Achieves NARI Success

The 9th annual NARI Atlanta Golf Tournament in August was an overwhelming success. Atlanta Design & Build would like to express our pride in and appreciation to Steven Roberts, Sales and Design Consultant.  Not only was Steven part of the team that won the 2017 event, and with his new team placed third in this year’s event, he was this year’s event Chairman. This is his third year of involvement in some level of planning for the tournament, and his first year as Golf Committee chair.

The golf tournament was held at Bear’s Best in Suwanee that boasts a collection of Jack Nicklaus’ favorite golf holes from Nicklaus designed courses around the world. The planning committee consisted of four other NARI members and also received a tremendous effort from NARI Atlanta’s new Executive Director, Kathryn Stempler. Steven and the other committee members met their goal of obtaining participants in each category. The event enticed over 50 golfers, 18 hole sponsors and a handful of other trade partner sponsorships to participate.

“Steven was able to secure sponsorships for all 18 holes, lunch, and the beverage cart, again far exceeding what was accomplished last year,” Kathryn Stempler remarked. “Steven was creative and motivated in his determination to obtain more sponsorships and more golfer registrations than in 2017 and his hard work really paid off.”

“We had great participation this year,” agreed Steven. “Sponsors, volunteers and especially the players turned out in numbers we have not seen in years!”

Attractive Front Entry Doors

One of the most noticeable aspects of your home is your front entry door. Somehow it draws attention to itself and creates curb appeal, even more so than your windows, siding, or roofing that occupy way more space. It is because your front door is an expression of your entire home—it makes its mark on your home’s exterior design, surrounding landscaping, and interior styling. As your neighbors drive by your home, or guests approach your door step, does your front entry door feel engaging?

A current popular trend that makes front doors especially captivating is when they are painted with a striking accent color, one that stands out from the rest of the home’s exterior. Colors can range from bold hues like orange, red or navy blue, to pastel green, lavender or turquoise. Black doors today are considered chic and sophisticated. The paint color you choose gives you the opportunity to show off your personality.

Another notable shift in the look of entry doors today is the trend for including glass inserts. Glass has the benefit of bringing daylight into your entrance foyer, which naturally brightens the space. Glass inserts also create a more intriguing door, since the panes can be designed in every shape, size, glass type, and configuration imaginable. Straight lines fit well with Modern or Craftsman style homes, while rounded glass inserts that may include scrollwork are usually chosen for Traditional style homes.

Today’s front doors are often larger than the previous standard size—from eight to nine feet high and up to three-and-a-half feet wide. The increased width and height of your front door can make a powerful impact on the outside of your home, indicating superior durability and security. The larger opening provides more space for moving furniture in and out of your home, as well as for wheelchair access. Including accent windows, such as sidelights and transoms, is also a fashionable trend that boosts the prominence of your front entrance, while allowing even more daylight to flood your foyer.

The door hardware you select should be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing as it complements the design of your door. For an elegant look, a handset is the way to go. There are many different designs that include one piece, two piece or full plate handsets with handles, latches, and dead bolts. You may also want to consider a digital keyless lock. Currently, dark hardware finishes like iron black and aged bronze are all the rage.

Wood, fiberglass and steel are three main materials in widespread use for door construction. If you prefer natural wood because of the warmth of its appearance, keep in mind that wood requires regular maintenance to protect it from the weather. Fiberglass doors are designed to withstand the elements and provide easy-care. In addition, these doors can convincingly resemble wood grain. Steel doors are sturdy and generally less expensive than fiberglass, but in harsh, humid climates they may be susceptible to denting and rusting.

Doors are an important part of the overall insulation picture for your home. Your fiberglass or steel door should have an energy-efficient core. Consider purchasing an entry door system with all the components—such as hinges and weather stripping—designed to work together efficiently.
