HIPC Explores Informal Support Services
Do you know a community group that supports new immigrants in Hamilton, connects them to services, and helps them navigate in the community? If so, we would like to connect with them about their experience.

About:
HIPC is currently conducting research that explores informal supports and networks in Hamilton for newcomers. We know that newcomers access help and resources through networks of friends and family, religious groups, ethnocultural associations, in their neighborhoods, and through various channels across the city. These experiences are valuable to understand in order for us identify ways in which newcomer needs are being met, as well as identify areas where we can meet possible gaps in Hamilton.

Our Ask:
We are looking to conduct one-on-one interviews (30 to 45 minutes in length) between October 2018 to January 2019. If you know someone who can speak to these experiences and issues, please contact our researcher:

Film Screening: Fire at Sea
Fire at Sea, an Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary focusing on the migrant crisis in Europe, directed by Gianfranco Rosi screened at McMaster University on October 24. The screening was part of MacGlobal: a program showcasing McMaster’s global opportunities and initiatives. It was followed by a discussion with Director of the McMaster University Institute for Globalization and the Human Condition, Dr. Petra Rethmann and Senior Project Manager of HIPC, Dr. Sarah Wayland.

The New York Times wrote: "Fire at Sea isn't the documentary you're expecting to see about the migrant crisis in Europe. Instead of raising awareness, this impressionistic film cultivates alertness." The documentary is available on Netflix Canada.
Digital Messaging Survey
Refugee 613, with funding from IRCC, has launched the Digital Messaging for Settlement and Integration (DMSI) project to explore how digital tools, in particular messaging apps like WhatsApp and text messages/SMS, can close the information gap between newcomers and settlement services, and provide added value to those services. We invite you to share your experience using digital messaging to serve newcomers, and be part of building knowledge and digital capacity in the settlement sector.

The survey includes questions for front-line workers and managers/executive directors, and will be available until October 26, 2018.
