Cold and Flu Season is Here
What you might have forgotten about
keeping your family healthy

I just heard an epidemiologist pushing the flu vaccine on Colorado Matters and that reminds me to push the basics.  Wether or not you promote the flu vaccine (I do not, I think it is guesswork and their are much better ways to stay healthy), it's once again time to talk about keeping your family healthy through cold and flu season.

While I jested today about "The Dreaded Man-Cold," on my bi-weekly KKCO 11 News Interview (www.nbc11news.com), I did discuss some important and easily forgotten tips.

First and foremost, get enough sleep, good clean water and reasonable nutrition.  Time and again, these practices have been shown in good research to give you the very best chance to stay healthy.  And while we may crave junk food when sick, this temporary set of urges will pass soon enough.

Second, remind your significant other that the chicken noodle soup is in the freezer and that they are perfectly capable of heating it themselves.  Not only are you providing them medicine in the form of a comfort food, you are also providing them with the rich medicinal tradition of a bone broth soup.

Third, don’t embellish the cold.  Offer a natural cold or flu remedy like elderberry syrup or hot ginger/lemon/honey tea and then let them take it, or not.

Fourth, just because your partner or your children are sick does not mean that you have to hang around and increase your chances of picking it up.  How about dinner out with a friend?  When we are sick, we can easily forget the basics while we are lost in fever, headache or delerium.  Related to this is to sleep separate from your partner and insist on good hygiene.  Give them a quick reminder to wash their hands, cover their mouth and sneeze tactfully into their sleeve.

Fifth, take your own herbal remedies to stay healthy, especially when the rest of the family is sick.

And lastly, none of this applies to the family dog, of course.  They are likely to be some very good medicine for you when you are in the doldrums.  Yeah pet therapy!

Basic Bone Broth Recipe
(Yes, chicken noodle soup counts)

The meat from the oxtails, chicken, or fish may be mixed into your medicinal bone broth soup for a hardy addition.

Ingredients
Chicken bone broth: chicken back bones and feet
Beef bone broth: beef oxtails and/or marrow bones
High gelatin broth: 1 pig foot and chicken feet

Add to above ingredients:
1 gallon or more water
½–1 tablespoon organic apple cider
Instructions for chicken, beef, or high gelatin bone broth:

1. Place bones of your choice in a crockpot, or use a soup pot if you’re making it on the stovetop. Fill with approximately 1 gallon of water, or enough to cover the bones. Add apple cider vinegar to help extract the minerals from the bones.

2. Set the crockpot on high for first hour, then turn to low for the remaining cook time. On the stovetop, allow broth to come to a gentle boil, then lower to a simmer for the duration of the cook time, about 12 hours. (See “Recommended Simmering Times” above.)

3. Remove bones and/or marrow to a large glass bowl to cool. (Separate the marrow from the bone to add back into the broth.) Once the bowl has cooled, store in the refrigerator overnight. The following day, scoop the broth into BPA-free containers.

4. Freeze or use a portion of the broth to make a medicinal bone broth soup right away.
