Dear Friends of the MU Career Center,

Welcome to the October edition of our newsletter! October is always such a fun month filled with cooler temps, lots of events, and of course, all things pumpkin! While there are no pumpkins or anything pumpkin-flavored in this newsletter (insert sad face), there ARE lots of TREATS (and no tricks!).

Read on to learn about some of our new and updated resources as well as other campus resources related to student career and personal development, a new collaborative event we'll be hosting with the Wellness Resource Center on Lowry Mall in early November, and hear from one of our paraprofessional staff as she shares her perspective on how the MU Career Center can be helpful for students. Last but not least, don't miss our LAST LinkedIn Photo Day of the semester, and find out about upcoming Career Development Network training opportunities for faculty and staff!

As always, thanks for reading, and for all you do!

Warmly,
MU Career Center Staff

New Handout: Guide to Employer Communication
Emily Mclanahan-Hluzek, Sophomore in Journalism and Sociology

Here at the MU Career Center, we are continuously updating our materials to ensure we are always providing students with the most accurate information possible. We recently did just that with our "Cover Letter" and "Thank You Letter" handouts, combining them to create the brand new "Guide to Employer Communication" handout. This handout covers both of those topics, as well as contains material on communicating professionally through email and LinkedIn. Read more about the handout and the importance of varying types of communication in Emily’s blog post – including how great employer communication landed her an internship!
Big Interview: Updated Features!
By Amelia Gardiner, MU Career Center Marketing Team Coordinator & First-Year Master's Student in Sport Psychology

Did you know that the MU Career Center provides web-based interview practice that can be utilized by students, faculty, and staff? It’s called Big Interview, and it just got a major update!

Big Interview is a web-based software provided FREE to MU students which allows them to record and analyze themselves answering interview questions. There is also an assignment section of Big Interview in which faculty and staff can assign mock interviews to students as part of professional development. The assignment section is full of new, helpful upgrades for faculty and staff to check out now! You can now search assignments by name, see review status at a glance, search for a student within an assignment, and search for questions with the assignment editor. These updates have led to improved review flow and overall easier use of the website.

You can start using Big Interview today and learn more at missouri.biginterview.com
Resources for Well-Being
By Henry Roth, Sophomore in Business Marketing

Mizzou students have a lot going on in their respective lives 24/7, so it is important to know of the wellness resources that the university offers. Among these resources are the Counseling Center, the Student Health Center, the Wellness Resource Center, career counseling, and more.
  • The Counseling Center, located in Parker Hall, offers both individual and group therapy for students. Crisis and consultation support is available 24 hours a day by calling 573-882-6601.
  • The Student Health Center, located on Hitt Street, offers not only medical assistance, but also behavioral health counselors and psychiatrists. These professionals can help students struggling and guide them back to being healthy.
  • The Wellness Resource Center, located in the Student Center, offers a wide variety of information and opportunities for student mental health and well-being. Developing healthy wellness habits early is very important for students’ futures in the workforce.
A great hub for more information about all of the above resources is now located at wellbeing.missouri.edu!
  • Additionally, the MU Career Center also offers FREE career counseling for students. These counselors offer students personalized sessions to help provide resources and insight for their major and career-related struggles. Career counselors are available by appointment through MU Connect!
Being in a good place mentally is very important in a work environment, especially for students stepping into a new environment to which they have not previously been exposed. Some important things to remind students of are that stress is normal and can be motivating. Additionally, there are healthy ways to relieve stress, such as exercise or meditation. However, at times, stress can get beyond a point of management. In this case, student should seek help through one of the many resources that the university offers.
