Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes

"Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings."
- William Arthur Ward
We are grateful for our dedicated volunteers, like Lorenzo and Mario, who graciously assist us with our work - including washing over one hundred place settings daily.

Volunteers Makeover PVLF with Murals and Facility Upgrades

Local artists (left to right) Priscilla Martinez, Jaime Sanchez, and Venessa Ledesma with their murals.

This summer, the dining and storage areas of Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes received a beautiful makeover, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

Volunteers painted our food storage building, installed new canopies and mesh fencing in our overflow dining area, installed signage, and completed a facility clean up and yard work. They also worked with local artists Priscilla Martinez, Jaime Sanchez, and Venessa Ledesma (pictured above) to "paint by numbers" the mural panels they had designed for installation in the dining shelter. Each panel depicts a real-life member of the PVLF community - including program participants, volunteers, and staff (see larger images below).

The donor also generously funded additional facility upgrades, including the installation of pavers on the back part of our lot, as part of the project. We are truly grateful to the donor, artists, and volunteers for beautifying and enhancing our facility. Our staff, volunteers, and program participants all take pride in the facility improvements. We offer special thanks to our Board member Casey Wu for coordinating this project.

Annual Fundraiser Fills
Empty Bowls in Our Community

Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes hosted our 15th Annual Empty Bowls Dinner and Auction at the Lagoon House at Pajaro Dunes Shorebirds on Saturday, September 15th. The event raised over $82,000 to sustain our food pantry and kitchen programs throughout the year, including funds to continue our successful pilot of specialized pantry bags for recipients who lack access to cooking facilities. Attendees viewed an emotionally moving slideshow featuring Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes program participants prepared by local photographer and volunteer Roger Vail, with words by former Executive Director, now Board member Brooke Sampson (the presentation, "Our Beloved Community," is available on our website).

Guests enjoyed appetizers catered by Monterey Bay Caterers, a selection of Hermitage Brewing Company beers, and local wines as they selected a hand-crafted ceramic bowl, browsed the raffle and silent auction tables, and listened to acoustic music by local duo, the Brothers Worden. Our Kitchen Manager Maria Gonzalez and her team of volunteers prepared a trio of homemade soups - including Maria's popular pozole - for dinner, which was accompanied by salad prepared with locally-grown lettuces donated by Dobler & Sons LLC. Attendees enjoyed fellowship with friends at colorful tables, decorated with orchids. A simple dessert of Driscoll's berries and an assortment of Monterey Bay Caterers' cookies concluded the meal.

Longtime volunteer Bob Montague was the guest of honor. Brooke Sampson spoke about Bob's contributions to the organization over the years - including transporting and stocking more than 4.5 million pounds of food - totaling over 35,000 hours of service. We recognized Steven Henderson (see Volunteer Spotlight article below) as the recipient of our annual Bob Montague Volunteer Award.

Board member Arnulfo Figueroa served as master of ceremonies and conducted a live auction to conclude the evening's program. We are grateful to our guests for giving so generously and making the event such a success.

Volunteer Spotlight
Annual Bob Montague Volunteer Award Recipient

Steven Henderson

Steven Henderson, CPA, of Henderson & Co. of Watsonville.

Steven Henderson is the recipient of this year's annual Bob Montague Volunteer Award, which recognizes dedication and significant contributions to our mission and the community we serve. A long-time local resident and business owner, Steven has supported Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes since its beginning as an outreach program of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Initially, he was a monthly donor, contributing funds to support our feeding programs.

In 2006, when former Executive Director Brooke Sampson joined PVLF, she and then-bookkeeper and Board officer Bob Montague met to discuss a pressing issue. PVLF's tax preparer had failed to file the organization's federal tax return on time and was being unresponsive to the organization. Quick action was needed. Brooke reached out to Steven, a CPA and Principal of Henderson & Co., to ask for his assistance. He agreed, advised her to draft a letter to the IRS, and met with Bob to put the tax return together promptly. The IRS accepted the letter and tax return filing without levying a penalty.

Steven has continued to prepare our annual tax return pro bono every year since, generously giving many hours of his time. The filing assures our compliance with the federal government and serves as a crucial document for grant seeking and fundraising purposes. It not only enumerates our finances and assets, it also accounts for all of the in-kind food donations we receive and outlines our mission and programmatic activities. It is a public record available to anyone interested in our organization's work, and is routinely submitted to foundations and governmental funders considering a grant to the organization.

About his service to PVLF, Steven simply says, "I like to help people in need when I can. If there's something I can do, I like to do it." A local Rotarian, Steven serves the community in many other ways as well by participating in his club's activities. We appreciate Steven sharing his professional expertise and time with us over the years. His counsel and contributions have strengthened our accounting practices and fundraising capabilities, sustaining our organization so we can continue in our mission.

Volunteer Appreciation

Our work feeding local residents in need would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers that generously give their time throughout the year. In August, our Board of Directors hosted an ice cream social to thank our volunteers for their service. Board members served ice cream scoops and novelties, cookies, Driscoll's berries, and beverages to the volunteers in our festively decorated dining shelter. Volunteers also participated in a raffle and won prizes. Thanks to all the volunteers who joined us for this fun afternoon.
