September 2018

Freedom Gala

2018 marks our inaugural Freedom Gala at the Eastbank Venue in Cedar Rapids on Friday October 12th. This will be an enjoyable evening filled with music, a great meal, silent and live auction.  It will also be educational - a first-hand look into 2 survivor’s lives as they tell their story, and hear more about our vision for the future, including housing for survivors.

We are working hard to change the story of our city, but it takes a whole community to make that happen! Reserve your place at the gala by visiting our website at www.ChainsInterrupted.com. Tickets are $75/each.

If you have connections in our community, we'd appreciate your help in making this the best possible event. Below, you’ll find ways you could support this year’s Freedom Gala.

Silent/Live Auction Items (products, experiences, gift cards, etc. be creative!) as well as survivor support items (primarily $10-$20 gas/visa gift cards) are also being collected.  Please be sure you designate your gift cards to either auction or survivor support.

Cedar Rapids Area Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition

These quarterly meetings provide education on a topic on Human Trafficking, intentional networking, updates on local, state and national happenings, and calls to action members can do to truly make a difference. With summer being busy for all, we are not having a Coalition Meeting this summer. The date for our next Coalition Meeting is Tuesday, October 23rd, from 11:30 to 1:00 PM in Beems Auditorium at the downtown Public Library. Gretchen Brown-Waech (the new HT Coordinator with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office) will be our speaker.

School Project:

Chains Interrupted will be meeting with the District Superintendents with the Grant Wood AEA in September, offering trainings for school staff, students and parents. We are looking for volunteers to present these trainings! Training for these presentations will be on Monday, Sept. 10th at Mercy Med Center, Hall-Perrine Cancer Center from 6:30-8:00PM.

Email Linda at EmpowerTheStudents@gmail.com if you are interested in presenting in schools (please note, this requires availability in day hours).

Hotel/Motel Project:

It is safe to say that more than 70% of sex trafficking occurs in hotels and motels. We have specially trained volunteers who are making their way through the corridor in an effort to train every hotel or motel.  We have translators available for a fee.  Kristina Glackin has assumed the Hotel/Motel Coordinator position.

International Work:

Chains Interrupted is continuing to partner in Guatemala through education and work toward building a safe house in a rural area around Lake Atitlan. We are doing this through IMPACTO Ministries (www.ImpactoMinistry.com), and the Protect Me Project (www.ProtectMeProject.org). Teresa will return in October to speak at the Pastor’s Congress about Anti-Human Trafficking work through the church there.

Survivor Support Group

We have started a Support Group for female survivors of labor and/or sex trafficking! This group is survivor-led. We meet on Tuesday evenings. Please email Teresa at chainsinterrupted@gmail.com with questions or referrals.

Rescue Run 5K Benefitting Chains Interrupted

Join us in raising awareness and funds to prevent human trafficking and care for victims of human trafficking right in our community. This year, all funds raised will support Chains Interrupted, a group in Cedar Rapids committed to preventing human trafficking and caring for victims.

The race is October 6th, 9 am, at the Terry Trueblood Center in Iowa City.

MERCY MEDICAL CENTER

Mercy Medical Center has become a pioneer, by creating and hiring Teresa for an “Anti-Human Trafficking Coordinator” position. This position is the first of its kind in the state, and the fifth in the nation! This is only a 0.2 FTE (8 hours per week) for now, and Mercy is looking for funding to expand the position. Within 12 days of the press release, Mercy staff referred 3 potential victims to Teresa. Some came to Mercy in search of freedom! Since announcing the position, 17 hospitals from across the state have requested training. She is currently working (furiously) on creating both an Internal and External Response Team to assist people in need of assistance out of a trafficking situation, as well as education for outside hospitals/clinics.
