D1.jobs: The big chair at Murray State has been posted below. Advertise your openings in the most-read daily publication in all of college athletics. Click here to get started.
The pace has certainly quickened at ECU, where Chancellor Staton has impaneled a 13-member search committee to recommend candidates for the Pirates' next AD. The committee, which includes representatives from the board of trustees, university administration, athletics administration and past and current presidents of the ECU Educational Foundation, will be co-chaired by Staton and consultant AD Hart. Staton: "We are very pleased with the progress special advisor Dave Hart has made in reviewing and advising us on areas of improvement needed to reach all of our goals in athletics. Because of those months of work, I believe the timing is now right to bring on board an AD who will lead Pirate athletics into its next era. I remain very appreciative of the expertise and assistance that Dave has brought to our athletics department, and I look forward to his continuing support as we work to put this program on a track for long-term success." Former Murray State FB student-athlete and current MSU regent Crigler has been tapped to help in the search for the school's next AD, serving as the search committee's liaison to the MSU Board of Regents. In this capacity, Crigler this week discussed the committee's decision not to use an outside firm to assist with the search, noting that "the downside [of a search firm] is obviously money. The other thing is, what the search firm really doesn’t understand is the culture of the place they’re serving. ... The people on the committee, the people who have been involved at Murray State year after year or were student-athletes that have gone on, like myself, to have other careers, we understand kind of the culture of Murray State and what Murray State needs and the fit you can get at Murray State.” Regarding the traits the next AD should have, Crigler cited the role's financial responsibilities as well as its requirement for communicating effectively with various campus constituencies. "So they have to be creative in the revenue department, they have to be involved in fundraising and development and they have to engage the community on behalf of Murray State. It’s tough to find someone that’s good in all those areas, so really what you have to do is have a solid team. Thankfully, we have some solid folks over there." The committee is currently in the process of putting together a candidate pool. (link)
Maryland: Here's the full 200-page report into the culture of the Terrapins FB program. (link); The Athletic's Auerbach does some heavy lifting reviewing the key findings: 1) By definition the culture was not toxic. However, the parent of a current FB student-athlete remarks, "No sane human being reading that report could say there wasn’t abuse."; 2) A lack of oversight of the program, by former AD Anderson & current boss/former Executive AD Evans is a theme; 3) HC Durkin commonly used psychological strategies to motivate student-athletes, like exposure to violent videos for "entertainment" purposes; 4) Former S&C HC Court wasn't properly managed by Durkin, though Durkin says he wasn't his direct report. Lots, lots more, including reports of Evans going above Anderson to communicate FB issues to Prez Loh & the hiring of The Sports Group's Jackson for a number of student-athlete cases. (link); The University System Board of Regents will meet again today. UMD Prez Loh & AD Evans are expected to be in attendance. (link); Headlining Washington Post columnist Jenkins, "Let’s say a fraternity boy died on the University of Maryland campus after being hazed. The University of Maryland System Board of Regents wouldn’t need four months, two reports and a seven-hour secret meeting to figure out the right response. The frat would be expelled from campus, and perpetrators of abuse would face criminal charges. But because Jordan McNair died at the hands of a football program backed by high-dollar donors, everyone seems confused about what needs to happen. It’s quite simple: Coach DJ Durkin must be dismissed, and those who failed to curb his excesses while presiding over an athletic department of 'chaos and confusion' should be expelled from the College Park campus, too, namely President Wallace D. Loh and Athletic Director Damon Evans." More. (link)
MBB-FBI: What's next? Sentencing for Gassnola on February 1, Dawkins/Code/Gatto on March 5. Attorneys around the case think two to four years is the likely outcome. Former Auburn AC Person's trial starts February 4. Former ACs Richardson (Arizona), Evans (Oklahoma State) & Bland (USC) will have theirs in April. More wire tapped conversations could come out in both of the upcoming trials. The NCAA says it will continue to monitor. Gatto plans to appeal. (link); The Athletic's Moore analyzes Kansas' decision of whether or not to continue its relationship with Adidas, "By breaking its partnership with Adidas, Kansas would be attempting to send a message to the NCAA that it wants to do everything in its power to comply with the rules and work with a shoe company that will also. […] Self is the most powerful man at KU, and his word will matter. A lot. And my jump-to-conclusion mat says he and KU will ultimately decide that it is time to separate itself from the three stripes. Just do it." (link); Former Louisville MBB HC Pitino's attorney says the verdict from Lower Manhattan proves his client had no knowledge of the pay-for-play scheme. (link)
Louisville: Updated financials for the Cards include MBB ticket sales pacing $5M behind expectations (which I found elsewhere as $13.1M), net position of the department is $137.1M, endowment at $13.634M, which is down roughly $10.5M due to buyouts for former AD Jurich & new MBB HC Mack. Good quote from AD Tyra: "The only thing worse than being in the (college athletics) arms race, is not being in the arms race." (link - scroll down); UofL doesn't look to be cutting ties with Adidas anytime soon, adds context to a new ethical leadership program that will involve athletics, the biz school & Three Stripes. It's called 'The Project on Ethical Leadership Excellence.' Both Adidas & Tyra donated $100K to get it going. (link); Another note from Tyra & FB HC Petrino, neither of whom say they were aware of rape allegations against suspended FB student-athlete Averett in the days leading up to the Boston College game a few weeks ago. (link)
A piece I missed earlier in the week in the latest SportsBusiness Journal takes a look at the growth of end zone projects for a number of FBS departments around the nation. Either recently finished or in the works: Texas, Arkansas, Purdue, Indiana, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Wyoming, Iowa State. HOK Design Principal Johnson points to the major recruiting lounges that are a key part, "That is about the parents." Populous Senior Architect Privitera: "We’re not trying to put in as many seats as possible. […] You can have your feet on the grass without being a high-level donor." More. (link)
Legalized Sports Gambling: The NCAA has established a Board of Governors Ad Hoc Committee on Sports Wagering to examine the sports wagering landscape and its potential impact on current NCAA regulations, education programs, and associated risks that could arise as more states legalize sports gambling. Board of Governors Chair and Georgia Tech Prez Peterson: "The NCAA and its members continue to take a thoughtful approach to the issue of sports wagering. ... We must continue to evolve and adapt our approach as the landscape continues to change and sports wagering expands in the United States.” (link); The NCAA has submitted its "Sports Wagering Principles" statement to the Indiana General Assembly, outlining a list of legislative requests that includes an implementation of core standards and consumer protections such as codifying an age limit, providing targeted advertising and addiction resources, placing limitations on who can place wagers, codifying penalties for bad actors and developing initiatives to maintain integrity and public confidence in professional and amateur sports. Of note, the proposal does not include the so-called "integrity fee" which has been suggested by the NBA and MLB. IN addition, the NCAA has proposed prohibiting sports wagering operators from "obtaining or using the protected health information of amateur or professional athletes without the consent of the individual." (link); Bloomberg columnist Nocera talks with "Eddie," a bookie based in New York, to examine how the potential of legalized gambling is affecting the business of someone who operates on the other side of the law. In short, Eddie, who plans to retire soon, doesn't expect legalization to affect his business, positing that it's doubtful that customers who have been with him for decades would leave just because gambling is legal. Additionally, there are tax consequences to legal betting. Still, both Eddie and Nocera contend that the next generation of gamblers is likely to utilize newer wagering vehicles; namely, smart phone or tablet apps. Nocera sums it up thusly: "The illegal bookmaking profession isn't dead yet. But it will be soon enough." (link)

Irish Prime Minister Varadkar announces the return of college FB to Dublin & Aviva Stadium starting in 2020 with a Notre Dame-Navy rematch. It'll be the first of five kicks on The Emerald Isle. All participants weren't named yet & if you're interested in learning more, contact John Anthony. (link); Navy AD Gladchuk says he & ND AD Swarbrick considered other European locations - London & Paris - but decided Dublin still made the most sense. Aer Lingus will be the title sponsor for all five games, which cumulatively are expected to deliver $250M worth of economic impact. (link)

Bucknell AD Truax sits down with the Daily Item to discuss a number of topics, including his motivation for taking the job, explaining that it was a "combination of elite academics and Division I athletics." Truax also cites recent Bucknell Hall of Fame inductees, whose speeches reinforced the importance of balancing the two. "What you get out of that really positions young men and women to be great beyond the classroom, beyond campus and prepares them for life beyond sports." In discussing his long-term vision for the university, Truax says his focus will be on making Bucknell the "preeminent program in the Patriot League with a strategic focus on winning in the classroom, winning in the community and winning in our competitive arenas," adding: "The great thing is we've done that historically, so it's, for me, how do we take it to the next level?" Specifically, Truax says success will be measured by performance in the league's President's Cup with a long eye toward becoming one of the best mid-major programs in the nation. Full interview. Oakland Deputy AD McMeel is headed to Arkansas Monticello (DII) as its associate vice chancellor/AD, with help from Athletics Staffing Consultants. McMeel served as interim AD during his time with the Golden Grizzlies and also was a key to fundraising efforts for a new FB stadium and basketball arena when he was at UCF, a basketball arena at Missouri State, and starting a new FB program at Kennesaw State. Nebraska Director of Development Events & Hospitality Stone raps with 1.Question's Brown on the unique move of shifting from a role in Student-Athlete Services to the Development unit. Stone notes how both jobs entail improving the user experience, "My goal, whether it was with Student-Athletes or now with donors, is to serve them with intentional and impactful programs that enhance the success of the Student-Athlete experience. […] It's great to embrace creativity but if you're creating just for the sake of creating, there's no point. So we always think about the intent behind our creativity." More, eight-minute convo. (link)
Not including last night's results, scoring at the FBS level is up nearly a point & a half from last season & an overall increase on attempted fourth down conversions looks to be part of the uptick. Duke HC Cutcliffe: "There are a lot of companies out there, analytic companies, that have aggressively pursued clients. I think a lot of people are listening to them, looking at the math, figuring it out. So I think it is a matter of the cat’s out of the bag." Teams are going for it on fourth down 21% of the time & converting at a 54.6% clip, a number that improves to 61.4% in the red zone. Also, red zone visits this season are resulting in more TDs (63.6%) than last year (61.9%). (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner surveyed nine current and former Pac-12 FB coaches to determine the best coaching gigs in the league. The results weren't terribly surprising, with USC receiving eight of the nine first-place votes and easily ranking as the conference's best job. Washington ranked second, Stanford was third, then Oregon and UCLA, and as one coach put it, "the top five are head and shoulders above the rest." There was a clear delineation in voting results between UCLA and sixth-place Arizona State (80 points to 63), with Colorado, Utah, California, Arizona, Washington State and Oregon State rounding out the league. Some interesting comments included. (link)
More Personnel: TCU Chancellor Boschini is still reviewing the facts surrounding former FB student-athlete Turpin, but will not rule out disciplining HC Patterson. (link); UNC System Prez Spellings is reportedly leaving her position. (link); Kent State Prez Warren will step aside on July 1. (link); North Dakota Assoc. AD for Student Support Services Amanda Hajdu and her husband, UND Sr. Asst. AD for Communications Jayson Hajdu, will both exit their posts as Amanda has accepted a job in Kansas City. (link); USF will use Greenwood/Asher & Associates to help with its presidential search. Goal is to have a new hire by the spring. (link); Tennessee will begin its own presidential search in early 2019 with incoming interim System President-Elect establishing a search committee when he takes over in November. (link)
A number of interesting comments from NBA Commish Silver from yesterday's Fast Company Festival. Number 1: "There are unlimited permutations with further legalization of betting and gamification of sports...incredible engagement...and ability to replicate live, in-person experience. The challenge is How can we make that a richer experience over time?" Number 2: "We have a very young audience. With that audience it’s not just cord cutting, it’s cord never. We have to find new ways to reach those consumers...May be direct to consumer; now can buy a portion of a game broadcast." Number 3: ".@NBA games are not just a passive experience any more. People want to be engaged." (link)

UT Arlington leaders have already done a good amount of leg work on the potential reintroduction of FB to the Mavs' portfolio. All monies would have to be privately generated & the projections call for $146M over 10 years, $43M+ for coaching staff salaries. In FY17 UTA's entire operating budget was $14.1M. Women's Soccer & Beach Volleyball would also have to be added to balance for gender equity purposes & would run another $10M over 10 years. Getting a FB team on the field would take six years & there's also a critical facility need. No indication on what happens next. (link)
Tulsa AD Gragg affirmed FB HC Montgomery, saying he's "fully supportive of Coach Montgomery" despite TU's 1-6 start and 3-16 mark in the last year-plus. While Montgomery's record over his first 45 games with the Golden Hurricane (19-26) is worse than his predecessor's (23-22), the Tulsa World's Haisten surmises that Gragg's support of the FB HC that he hired and TU's budget crunch could keep the program from doling out a $4M buyout to Montgomery. Haisten says "It would be shocking if there were a move against the coach – and there should not be." (link)
Florida State FB HC Taggart announced a $1M commitment toward a football operations facility as part of FSU's recently launched "Unconquered" campaign. An anonymous Seminole fan was so moved by Taggart's donation that he matched the $1M pledge. The booster said "Anyone who has the conviction and character to lead by example like that – especially so early on in their tenure – deserves a high level of support. When I initially heard about their commitment, I was so taken back that I had to ask Seminole Boosters, Inc. representatives if it was actually real." The campaign hopes to improve athletics facilities, including a Nicklaus-designed golf course and upgrades for MBB, WBB, baseball and the Moore Athletics Center. (link)
Northern Illinois announced a "Drive for 25" campaign to increase membership in its Huskie Athletic Fund to 2,500 from its current total below 1,200. AD Frazier said the campaign "is about Huskie students-athletes and continuing to provide the resources and levels of support necessary to allow them to compete, and succeed, at the highest levels." (link)
Talk about positive perspective stories, The Athletic has provided two this week, starting with Vannini's profile of a UAB tradition whereby the Blazers wear the names of current or former patients from Children's Harbor, a family center within Birmingham's Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children that aims to provide a safe and relaxing space for families of children with serious illnesses. However, players don't just wear the names of the children; they are given the children's stories and often reach out to the children on their own. HC Clark: "The best part was our kids embrace it. We gave them a snippet on kids that had grown or passed, and they started forming relationships with the families. That week and after the game. ... It’s something we’re going to do from now on. It meant so much to our guys to play for the names on the back.” From the perspective of the children, Children's Harbor CEO Grate puts it best, saying: "To see one of these big guys in real life, it’s larger than life for someone so small and fragile. To meet them inserts a real-life hero into their lives, gives them someone to look up to, someone encouraging them, someone who is kind of a superhero to them." (link); Meanwhile, O'Neil profiles Princeton ice hockey and field hockey student-athletes Davis and Donovan, respectively, whose dreams of athletic glory were detoured -- but not derailed -- by the news they would have a child. Despite having every reason to forego their athletic careers, both, with the support of coaches and the Princeton community, pursued their goals on the ice and field. The two would marry the following year, and soon after would find out they were pregnant again. Still, instead of choosing an easier path, both buckled down and continued their careers. Davis says this was due, in part, to not wanting to have any regrets. "We felt that would build up a resentment. It was definitely harder on her. She’s the one who had to take the time off, but we wanted to make sure she got it all in." Full story, well worth the read. (link)
Also Noticed: Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim called to apologize to high-profile hoops agent Paul, who represents LeBron James and former Syracuse commit Bazley, after Boeheim and James got into a bit of a Twitter spat this week. (link); UCF fans have a "College GameDay Invasion" planned, led by attorney Barr, who was responsible for the plane banner flyover at the Alabama-Louisville game earlier this year. (link); Purdue Fort Wayne will reinstate Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field next fall. (link); Former University of Oregon First Lady Frohnmayer publicly contested University of Nike author Hunt during his reading at Powell's Books on Monday. She pointed out 20 "glaring inaccuracies" in the book. (link); Oklahoma AD Castiglione says concessionaire Levy projects a net revenue from alcohol sales between $200K-300K annually. (link); Operation Hat Trick, now 10-years in, will update its logos and brand style, specifically adding a tagline and word marks to existing graphics.
