Yesterday's Young Neuroscience Ireland Conference was an outstanding success - thank you and many, many congratulations to the organising committee:

Amy Courtney (Co-Chair) and Conor James Mc Veigh (Co-Chair), with Sarah Abdulmalek, Audrey Bradford, Dwayne Byrne, Noelle Enright, AmirAli Farokhniaee, Phillippa Fowler, Anne Marie Howe, Sinead Lanigan, Kelvin Lau E How, George Merces, Lisa Mc Donnell, Brendan O’Donnell and Keira Turner.

The conference was simply a fantastic celebration of young Irish neuroscience - the invited speaker talks, early career award data-blitz presentations, career panelists, selected student talks and posters, and the prizewinners etc. were outstanding.

If you were unable to make it, you can get a feel for the event on Twitter by searching for #YoungNSI18. Indeed, the @NeuroscienceIRL tweets alone generated 20,000 twitter impressions during the event (!) which is phenomenal for such a small society conference.

So well done to all involved - you should be very proud!

The Prize-Winners
Massive congratulations to Sarah O'Donovan from Cora O'Neil's lab (with Aideen Sullivan) at UCC for winning the best oral presentation prize for her outstanding talk on the brain-gut axis in Parkinson's disease. Follow Sarah on Twitter here.

The poster prize was jointly won by Caoimhe Gaughan and Anurag Nasa from Erik O'Halnon's group at TCD for their poster on high resolution tractography.

Well done Sarah, Caoimhe and Anurag!
Early Career Investigator Award
It was a tough decision for the judges, but out of the nine incredible Early Career Investigator candidates, there could only be one winner. And that winner is Kathy Ruddy from Robert Whelan's lab in TCD! Follow Kathy on Twitter here.

Kathy will now deliver a Prize Lecture at the British Neuroscience Association’s “Festival of Neuroscience” (BNA2019) in the Convention Centre Dublin in April 2019, where she will be presented with her award (an engraved medal and a cheque for €500).

Congratulations Kathy from all of us at NSI and from all of the Irish neuroscience community!
Originally from Northern Ireland, Kathy completed a PhD at Queen’s University Belfast under the supervision of Prof. Richard Carson, awarded in 2014. She went on to undertake a post-doctoral research position at ETH in Zürich, Switzerland, for three years under the supervision of Prof. Nicole Wenderoth. To date she has published 8 full peer reviewed original research manuscripts and two invited review articles as lead author (one was named ‘Publication of the year 2017’ by the Swiss Society for Neuroscience), and a further 2 peer reviewed original research manuscripts as co-author, plus one book chapter. In 2017 Kathy was awarded a two-year fellowship from the Irish Research Council to conduct a project at Trinity College Dublin on how Brain-Computer Interface can be used to improve aspects of the brain’s inhibitory control systems, under the supervision of Prof. Robert Whelan.

Congratulations also to all of our shortlisted candidates (pictured here at yesterday's conference). You can read more about these candidates here.
