November Program Reminder

TRACKING BIRD MIGRATION

Tuesday, November 13 -  6:45 p.m.
THE KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION CONFERENCE CENTER, 4801 Rockhill Rd. KCMO 64110, in the Brookside Room - “Technology and Tracking Bird Migration: What We Are Learning and How You Can Help" Tracking birds during migration is a burgeoning field of ornithological study due to advanced and improving technologies. Tracking devices small enough to be placed on songbirds, bats, and even large insects are transforming what we know about where animals migrate, the paths they take to get there, and how we can target areas for conservation that birds and wildlife use on their journeys. Come learn more about these exciting technologies from Sarah Kendrick, Missouri State Ornithologist, and how you can help!

Please feel welcome to join our host committee and Sarah at Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue on the Plaza before the meeting. Meet around 5:00 p.m., and ask to be seated with the Audubon party. Otherwise, join us at the Kauffman Foundation at 6:00 p.m. for socializing. Business and program begin at 6:45.

Please note: Our November meeting will be held at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center on the SECOND Tuesday of the month (Nov 13)

Free and open to the public.

THE ART OF CONSERVATION: A VISIT WITH DING DARLING

HISTORIAN AND THEATER ARTIST, TOM MILLIGAN, portrays Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling in this one actor play. A friend of Missouri, “Ding” Darling was one of the original designers of the Missouri’s Amendment 4, creating for us our non-political conservation agency. Ding also crafted the Wildlife Restoration Act, the most significant piece of conservation legislation in American history. He founded the National Wildlife Federation, led the U.S. Biological Survey, reformed the National Wildlife Refuge system, created the Federal duck stamp program, and won two Pulitzer prizes as an editorial cartoonist. Ding is considered by many to be one of the most influential members of the modern conservation movement in the first half of the 20th century. You may have even visited the National Wildlife Refuge named in his honor. The Art of Conservation: A Visit With Ding Darling on YouTube.

Go Native for the Holidays

KC WILDLANDS 18TH ANNUAL RED CEDAR CHRISTMAS TREE EVENT

Saturday, December 1 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
MILDALE FARM - 35250 W 199th St, Edgerton, KS 66021 - Kansas City WildLands, in partnership with Johnson County Park & Recreation District, is again offering the public an opportunity to remove invasive red cedars and take them home to decorate for the holidays! When you take home a native cedar tree, you’ll not only make your house smell great, you’ll be helping restore wild places to their original health.

Please bring a handsaw (no chainsaws or axes!) and rope to tie your tree to your vehicle. Sturdy boots and work gloves are recommended. Volunteers will be there to help you cut, carry and tie down your tree if needed. Kansas City WildLands suggests a minimum $15 donation for each tree, with proceeds benefiting natural community restoration throughout the Greater Kansas City region. For more information, contact Linda Lehrbaum at 816-561-1061, ext. 116 or linda@bridgingthegap.org.

BIRD BANDING
Saturday, November 10 - 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Our friends from the Missouri River Bird Observatory, Ethan and Dana, gently capture, band, and answer your questions about these wild birds. Visitors have the opportunity to photograph and release birds back into the wild! Please feel welcome to come and go at any time throughout the three-hour event. If you can't make it in January, this season's banding programs will be held on the second Saturday of the month, November through February, and the first Saturday of March.

Note: High winds, rain and extreme temperatures are hazardous to netted birds. In case of inclement weather, Ethan and Dana will present a non-banding program, including resighting previously banded birds. If the weather outlook is poor, please call 816-298-0559 to ask if bird banding is happening as scheduled.

Field Trips

TO VARIOUS LOCATIONS AROUND THE MIDWEST

Burroughs field trips are free to Audubon members and the public, and people of any age or level of experience are welcome to participate! Any trip may involve walking on a variety of terrain and surfaces, but some trips will be more strenuous than others. Trip leaders can advise you of the physical activity involved. Since we visit a number of wild areas and habitats, we respectfully ask that your pets not accompany us on the trail. If they're not given to vocal excitement, pets in vehicles are fine.

Saturday, November 17 - 7:00 a.m.
Miami and Linn Counties -
We’ll stop and scope Hillsdale Reservoir, Miola Lake, Paola Water Treatment Ponds, Unit G, and La Cygnes Lake for waterfowl, gulls, grebes and loons. We’ll also explore the areas for wintering sparrows and year-round residents.  This trip is mostly a driving trip with minimal walking.

Saturday, November 24 - 8:45 a.m.

Loess Bluffs NWR joint trip with Midland Empire Audubon Society - We’ll witness multitudes of Snow Geese and waterfowl, as well as dozens of Bald Eagles. We’ll gather at the Loess Bluffs Welcome Center around 8:45 a.m., and begin our first trip around the refuge’s 10-mile auto tour loop around 9:00. We’ll return to the visitor center around 12:30 p.m. for lunch and restrooms before making a second pass around the loop in the afternoon.

Saturday, December 1st - 8:00 a.m.
Johnson County joint trip with Topeka Audubon - Join us as we explore western Johnson County for winter migrants, waterfowl, and sparrows.
