This Week @ The Homeless Coalition

Tonight is the night for the Oakley Masquerade! Thanks to David Freeze and Jake Stone for letting us be a part of the shenanigans again this year!

Join us for Mass Action for Black Liberation's 2nd Saturday discussion and potluck as we delve into how homelessness is produced and housing is allocated for the promotion of capitalism. Why is there a lack of affordable housing? What role does racism, development, poverty, and other systemic issues play in the creation and recent growth of homelessness?

Special guests for the panel discussion will include Josh Spring, Executive Director of the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition, and residents from the 3rd Street encampment.

2018 Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month has come to an end. As we head into November, we are thankful for the opportunity to change so many students' lives. Make sure you catch our next meeting (in a new location)

Over-the-Rhine Community Housing

A longtime Over-the-Rhine nonprofit has been awarded a $200,000 to help it address the gap in affordable housing.

Over-the-Rhine Community Housing, founded more than 40 years ago, has been named the 2018 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders grant recipient in Cincinnati. This marks the first time Neighborhood Builders has named a nonprofit partner in Cincinnati.

OTRCH provides affordable housing services for low-income individuals as well as property development, property management, resident services and tenant advocacy. OTRCH was selected for its work in Greater Cincinnati to address the affordable housing gap.

As an award recipient, OTRCH will receive:

  • A $200,000 grant
  • A year of leadership training for executive director Mary Burke-Rivers and emerging leader Angela Merritt
  • A network of peer organizations across the U.S.
  • The opportunity to access capital to expand their impact.

#SNAPMatters
Day 2 of Food Security Month

SNAP Story:
“When I was unemployed and searching for work, SNAP helped me eat so I had the energy to find a job. When I was laid off and again looking for work, it was there for me again. Now I have a job, but I sure appreciate a program like SNAP that helped me survive.” Jerry

SNAP Fact:
“Low-wage workers are less likely to have access to unemployment insurance. One study found that though low-wage workers are over twice as likely as other workers to be unemployed, they are less than half as likely to be covered by unemployment insurance.” (This means they likely need SNAP to survive.)

“Workers turn to SNAP to supplement low and fluctuating pay and to help them get by during spells of unemployment.”

SNAP Action:
Take time to call 10 of your friends over the weekend to encourage them to vote. Share with them what you found out about how policymakers have voted on issues such as SNAP, health care and affordable housing programs. Encourage your friends to be educated voters. Some (many) TV campaign ads frame words in a manner to confuse voters. Investigate how politicians really voted at Project VoteSmart www.votesmart.org

Your phone calls just might be the inspiration your friends need to be voters!

Center for Independent Living Options

Did you know that curbside voting is available?
If you want to vote at your polling location but have difficulty getting out of your car, you can request that the poll workers bring your ballot to you. When you arrive at your polling place, you must let the poll workers know you are there. You can do this by sending someone inside to tell them or by calling your county board of elections to tell them you're at your polling location and need help. They will then notify the poll workers inside. Two poll workers - one Democrat and one Republican - will come out to your car to assist you. You will still need to provide the correct identification.

In Ohio if you experience a barrier to voting or discrimination today at your polling location, contact the Disability Rights Ohio Hot Line at 800-282-9181.

Congratulations to Jamie Landvatter who was just promoted to Senior Attorney and named the Project Manager of the new Kinship Care Team. This innovative initiative will take an integrated approach to address client needs that arise from kinship custody issues such as benefits, housing, guardianship or education.

Jamie joined Legal Aid in early 2015 from the Hamilton County Public Defenders Office where she was an Attorney/Guardian ad litem (GAL). Working out of our Hamilton office, Jamie’s legal practice has focused on GAL, Family and Immigration law cases.

Jamie graduated from The Ohio State University with a BSSW in social work and a BA in Spanish. She received her law degree from the University of Cincinnati, College of Law where she was the Immigration and Nationality Law Review Editor-in-Chief. While in law school, she clerked at the Children's Law Center and was a graduate fellow at Legal Aid. A Cincinnati native, she now lives in Butler County with her husband and two children.

The Homeless Coalition proudly stands by people fighting for their homes. We engage thousands each year through our education program, including our Speaker's Bureau. We publish Streetvibes bi-weekly to advocate for systems change and to be a voice and resource for so many. The money we get through the Kroger Community Rewards https://www.kroger.com/account/create/ program supports our efforts and our lobby, which provides mail service and refuge for dozens of people a day.

You can support us without spending a dime!

Note: You just need your alternative ID (phone number) and an email address to register. Once you do, search for the "Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless" and choose us.
