We would like to assess how 2018 was for NON-migratory New York State beekeepers and their beehives. Information may help to determine trends in honeybee health and enable beekeepers to see these trends.

Please complete the survey as best as you can and write any comments you feel that can add to future surveys and improve the NY Bee Wellness program. Only some questions are required.
All info is confidential, and general results of the survey will be shared and posted on NYBeeWellness.org January 2019

For the results of previous surveys, please see the website (NYBeeWellness.org). Remember, results are broken down by regions within New York State.

Hopefully you have an idea of what the varroa mite situation is in your hive(s), but it is not too late to do the final assessment and treatment before wrapping up for the winter.
1) 3 day sticky boards (divide by 3 for an average 1 day count, ideally should be less than 24). You can use posterboard coated with petroleum jelly (use a mini paint roller) with screening for hives without a screened bottom board.
2) Use of oxalic acid as a dribble method, best results when the hive is broodless, use on a windless day.

Below are IR photos of a hive owned by a fairly new beekeeper in the Buffalo area. They are using a FLIR ONE.  It’s a tiny IR adapter that plugs into a iPhone.
As expected, the cluster is low in the hive and will move up as the winter progresses. The bees should be provided with plenty of food/stores in the upper deep or chamber. The tar paper reduces the accuracy somewhat, but is still readable.

Mandatory Hive Registration in NYS
  This is a serious issue that will affect all NYS beekeepers.
   Unfortunately few beekeepers are aware of the undertaking to reinstate mandatory registration (which was repealed in 2010), and that most beekeepers are being kept woefully uninformed and is some instances misinformed.
What many would like to see is for the State of New York to provide services for all beekeepers, with no strings attached, and release information about disease info, spraying, and other programs which may affect honey bees such as tick control measures using pesticides-- all info which Albany possesses. A hive and frame fumigation chamber centrally located in NYS would be extremely helpful in controlling pathogens.
  There is a website with an online petition , map of petition signatures, press articles, Q&A page, comments page, and contact info for your representatives.

Inquiry to obtain some worker bees for a research study for mercury levels
The objective of this study is to identify current pollution levels. They are planning to obtain honeybees from around 6-10 biggest cities of the US and rural areas near to those cities. Some worker bees (~ 50-60 bees) from any beekeeper association who maintains hives in the city limit (or outside the city limit which can be used as a rural sample) for this research study.
