Market Notes from Noni

We had our first Winter Market last Saturday and we couldn't be happier with the turn out. Even in the rain, you lovely people warmed our hearts with your support and your farm-fresh fervor. We still have plenty of root vegetables for your pantries to keep you stocked up for the winter along with some hardy alliums like garlic.

We only have three more markets before the season is over so stop by to keep us company. Markets start at 10 a.m. and end at by 12 p.m. so make sure to mark it in your calendars.

Feature Vegetable - Chard

Rainbow, Swiss, whatever you choose to call it, this lovely leafy green doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Remove the stalk and saute it like spinach, or chop it up raw in a salad! This is a hearty nutritious green addition to your table for these colder fall and winter months.

Winter Market Vendor Features

Our first Winter Market on Saturday was a buzz of activity! We heard rave reviews about our Winter Market vendors last week. The featured vendors this week include: A Bread Affair, Erd Soap, Nicki Muir, Oyster & King, and Seed of Life. Bread, Soup, Seafood, and Eggs, now that sounds like a tasty food line-up.

Keep up with our winter market features and read more about them here.

Market Recipe Blog: Lentil Shepherd's Pie with Roasted Garlic Mashed Cauliflower

A hearty favourite for the cool season is shepherd's pie, and this take on it gives you a chance to celebrate the flavour of in-season fall foods like carrots, onion, garlic, herbs and cauliflower. Make it for yourself and freeze servings for later or feed your friends and family with this tasty dish!

Check out the recipe on our market recipe blog.

Land and Food Systems Internship Applications Open

New postings listed this week! Deadline on Sunday, November 18th at 5:00 p.m.

The LFS 496 Internship applications for January are open and we've added a few more spots and companies to the roster. These internships prepare UBC students professionally and academically for future careers through a mentored learning experience with real organizations.

The positions available include communications and academic positions at the CSFS at UBC Farm, and positions with impact food and farming businesses like Fresh Roots, Lita’s Mexican Foods, the Small-Scale Meat Producers Association, Solecito, Bite Snacks, and Tayybeh, as well as a position supporting local food systems with Vancity. There are new opportunities working in schools through Think&EatGreen@School and research through the BC Food Web.

Apply the theory you gain from class through on-the-ground food system-related work and through reflections and course assignments that support your practical learning. These positions are unpaid, for-credit internships.

Read more about the internship program and apply here.

It's been a great season for workshops this year and we just wanted to thank all the wonderful instructors and participants for their help in making this year such a success.

There are only three workshops left for the season so make sure to check them out before winter rolls in. Get some baking done with Chef Valentine's Advanced Choux Pastry class, follow it up with some tasty Kasu Broth and Soup with Kimiko's Cooking with Sake Kasu workshop, and store all of these goodies in your very own hand-woven basket with Rebecca's Basketry with Invasive Species tutorial.
