Reports surfaced yesterday that ECU Chancellor Staton would exit his leadership post at the institution by January 1st of next year & was looking for favorable buyout terms. Later in the day Staton commented on the situation, "No, I have not accepted any kind of deal with anyone and I have certainly not resigned as ECU's chancellor. I’m on the job and that's what I plan to keep doing. We just went through a 360 review which is done on chancellors every four years. We actually did one after my second year here at ECU. I'm in my third year and that 360 review was overwhelmingly positive. This is not the time to even be thinking about or talking about a change for the ECU chancellor. That's not what we want to do. We don't want to talk about that. To me, candidly, it's a distraction. […] I will tell you, and it’s no surprise, you’ve got some people in this community — very few, I must say, that I’ve bumped into — who believe that every problem in the world began on July 1, 2016, when I showed up. In reality, a lot of the things we were dealing with were things I had nothing to do with one way or the other, including athletics. It’s very frustrating for me to be in a situation where I have to defend those kinds of things. But it goes with the territory." Later in the article, Pirates FB HC Montgomery praises the influence of Special Advisor on Athletics Hart, who he says has provided beneficial perspective on how other top departments around the nation are run. (link)
Maryland Prez Loh getting major support from key university supporters & state lawmakers as momentum surrounds keeping Loh in place after it was announced last week he would retire summer of 2019. $31M-donor Iribe, "Because of the improper handling, the credibility and reputation of the university have been jeopardized and we may have lost a great president. [...] I urge you, the Board of Regents, and the Chancellor to publicly declare support for President Loh’s continued leadership." (link)
Hoops: With the regular season tipping tonight & Kansas facing Michigan State in a high-profile matchup, Yahoo's Wetzel calls KU HC Self "the poster child of the NCAA's double standard." Of course, Wetzel is referring to student-athlete De Sousa being held out of action due to his name being involved in the recent MBB-FBI trial, yet Self still on the sidelines leading the Jayhawks. Wetzel: "If you’re a player, why bother even cooperating? Better to be like a coach and just deny, deny, deny and hide behind previous statements and sycophant administrators. After all, the season is starting on ESPN, but without the player from Angola. The Hall of Fame coach whose team never loses the conference race will be there." More. (link); Yahoo's Forde continues with, "At [insert school involved in MBB-FBI situation], they've done nothing with [insert HC or AC mentioned in MBB-FBI situation]." In addition to Kansas, the list includes Duke, LSU, La Salle, Arizona & Cal State Northridge. (link); The Women's game doesn't have any such off-court drama going, instead intrigue surrounds Notre Dame as it looks to repeat, something only Tennessee, UConn & USC have ever done in the sport. Fighting Irish HC McGraw: "Every season is different. But this one is a bigger puzzle for me because of all the people looking down the bench." (link)
The national FCS picture doesn't always get enough coverage, but FootballScoop takes a good look at where we stand with just two weeks to go before the Playoffs are announced. North Dakota State continues to be the FCS version of Alabama, the growth of the Kennesaw State program - currently 8-1 & ranked #2 - in just four seasons since its launch is a story to continue to watch, East Tennessee State's hire of former SEC/ACC AC Sanders is called the best of last year's HC moves, Colgate's defense has only given up 23 points all season (including shutouts in five of its last six games). Let that last one sink in a bit. More. (link)
Fresno State's 2018-19 budget data hits the wire, revenues expected up to $41.45M (+2.1% year-over-year), FB gate receipts to $4.125M (+6.2%), MBB gate projected to $332K (+31.7%), university support at $19.17M (+7.1%), guarantee game revenue $1.048M. Expenses total $41.52M (+2.2%), athletic aid aid at $8.13M (+5.9%), media/production services allotted $234.5K (+20.8%), FB operational costs $2.37M (+18.2%). A bit more. (link)
Learfield & its Campus+ unit strike a big deal with AT&T to help the telecom "deepen its reach within higher education institutions." More specifically from AT&T's perspective, "Through this relationship with Learfield, we'll work with administrators and other campus stakeholders to understand the unique challenges each university faces. Then, we'll help design customized solutions that will deliver new and engaging experiences to students, faculty and alumni. […] Here's what this may look like. Research and development opportunities will help further on-campus learning. And recruiting and mentoring opportunities will help students succeed beyond the classroom." (link)
Latest SBJ: College headliner Smith takes a look at the upcoming MBB campaign through the lens of off-season developments. Pac-12 Networks analyst & former Cal/Stanford HC Montgomery: "Yeah, there is a sense that nothing has really changed. It’s like pushing a boulder up a hill. It’s going to take time to see change." Big East Commish Ackerman: "Right now, it feels largely like business as usual. Nothing’s changed. But that’s not a bad thing because most of the programs, from where we sit, fall into the 'good apple' category." Ackerman is also a bear on how the introduction of G League guaranteed contracts will impact the sport, "College basketball fans still cheer for the name on the front of the jersey." More, including an interesting chart on top TV advertisers around MBB programming, topped by Geico's $15.228M. (link); Smith also Q&As with G League Prez Turner. Notable quote, "We asked a lot of constituents across the NBA family — GMs, agents — and we just settled on $125,000 as an appropriate point for the first year. We always reserve the right to adjust as this program rolls out." (link); Finally, Smith studies the increase in mobile ticketing initiatives to aid getting students into athletic venues. Experience gets the nod as an industry leader with 14 schools utilizing its products to appeal to students. At South Carolina, half of the 34K student body has downloaded the app for access to games. (link); All three links are open thanks to D1.ticker, Learfield & SBJ synergy.
On the same day Under Armour launched its campaign to promote a new outwear collection for youth, with youth athletes as the focal point of the creative, comes reports of UA's workplace culture. Some questionable policies included trips to strip clubs on the company's dime & the invitation of female staffers to company parties based on their attractiveness. UA CEO Plank: "Our teammates deserve to work in a respectful and empowering environment. We believe that there is systemic inequality in the global workplace and we will embrace this moment to accelerate the ongoing meaningful cultural transformation that is already under way at Under Armour. We can and will do better." (link - youth campaign, link - workplace report)

The Women's Soccer NCAA Tournament field is set with Stanford, Florida State, Georgetown & North Carolina as #1 seeds. #2s: West Virginia, Baylor, UCLA & Tennessee. Action begins on Friday. (link - bracket, link - show & article); CBS Sports' Rothstein: "The Champions Classic has been extended through the 2021-22 season, per release. 2019 in NYC, 2020 in Chicago, 2021 in NYC, 2022 in Indianapolis." (link); Southern Miss AD Gilbert still expects to schedule a 12th FB kick, but mentions a timeframe of a couple of more weeks before a deal will be finalized. (link)

We're entering HC change season for a number of Fall sports, including FB, soccers and, in a couple of more weeks, volleyball. Matrix Analytics Solutions' Bartoo writes for AthleticDirectorU on how analytics can be leveraged for better hiring & retention choices. Barton points to & explains some key advanced metrics, like modified win total & roster talent discrepancy. There's also two case studies to consider. Notes: "The goal of analytics in a coach’s profile is to minimize risk and maximize potential. […] When making coaching decisions, athletic directors should use big picture metrics to reduce risk and put themselves in a position of greater knowledge to negotiate better terms and reduce risk in the hire, track, fire processes." More. (link)
Conference USA's new MBB scheduling strategy profiled in the New York Times. Latest thoughts from Commish MacLeod: "The knock on our teams has been you don’t have enough top 50 wins, top 100. Well, we don’t have an opportunity to play those opponents.  How can we take our own schedule and make sure our better teams are playing our better teams? […] One of our issues is perception. If our teams had been seeded 7, or 10 even, would they have progressed farther? Maybe the first time, we don’t get another team in, but we get a much better seed. We felt it was worth the chance to try it." MacLeod also points to the new WBB model where all final weeks will be set, but against expected similar opponents, "We'll have two models to evaluate." (link)
In his weekly Media Circus entry, The Athletic's Deitsch wonders why ESPN felt compelled to apologize to SEC Commish Sankey on air last weekend after political commentator Carville riffed on conspiracy theories in favor of Alabama. Deitsch: "When commentator Stephen A. Smith, for instance, threatened NBA MVP Kevin Durant on the air, there was no network apology." (link - scroll down)
Baylor AD Rhoades turns to Kansas State Assoc. Director of Development Schilling as his new Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff in Waco. Shilling will have oversight of human resources, as well as, "direct departmental hiring and evaluation processes and provide leadership and communication relating to personnel matters." Schilling will also handle agendas for executive & senior staff meetings, plus serve as the liaison for athletics with the Board of Regents. (link)
More Personnel: The NCAA completed its latest Minority Coaches Series, with this year's class including five Volleyball ACs, eight WBB ACs, and eight Track & Field ACs. Complete list of participants included. (link); Former UC Santa Barbara Track & Field HC Dolan sues the school for wrongful termination, alleging five violations including age discrimination, retaliation and breach of contract. Dolan spent the 2018 T&F season on administrative leave after allegations surfaced of his verbal and psychological abuse toward student-athletes. He seeks compensatory damages. (link); Yahoo's Forde with his list of the worst five 'Power 5' FB HC jobs: Kansas, Kansas State, Rutgers, Oregon State and Vanderbilt (link); Oregon State Women's Soccer HC Rhode will not return for a 12th season with the Beavers. (link); Faculty Pacific passed a vote of no confidence in Prez Eibeck yesterday, which followed a resolution of no confidence by the Academic Council and student protests calling for her removal. BoR Chair Huber, who sent a letter to faculty, staff and students as recently as last Wednesday indicating the board "strongly and unequivocally" supports Eibeck and the administration, had this to say after the vote: "The regents will review and discuss the information and provide a response to the Academic Council." (link); Minnesota will select its next president from approximately 60 candidates. Comparatively, nearly 150 applied for the job in 2010 when current UM Prez Kaler was chosen. (link)
TV/OTT: The New York Post indicates New Fox is pushing for an extended "multibillion dollar deal" to keep Major League Baseball's World Series beyond its current contract date of 2021. (link); PwC with its annual projections on the greater sports industry. Expects media rights to increase by a compound growth rate of 4.5% through 2022, writes on the further integration of FAANG companies (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix & Google). The most interesting portion of the report, in my view, is discussion on new supply models, like those for augmented & virtual reality. (link - article, link - full report); Facebook Director of Global Live Sports Hutton in a conversation with SportTechie, "It isn’t really a time of clear answers. It’s clearly a period where sports consumption is changing, and we’re a big part of that consumption change. But we need to learn where we’re going to end up in this route. Sport is a natural fit with Facebook, it’s just 'How do we fit? Where do we invest? Where do we look and prioritize?' That philosophy will shape over time." How big is Facebook's budget for the sports initiative? "The best answer to that is, look at what we’ve done. Clearly, it’s not massive, but it’s sizable experiments in a few key markets." (link)
Advice from Washington AD Cohen to students at her old high school, "There’s no straight line to success. […] Take some risks. Be bold. Have big dreams and big goals for yourself. And, when an obstacle hits you, which it will, and when you fall down, which you will, just stand up and look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I’m going to embrace the suck.’ […] It’s natural tendency for us to gravitate to the people we’re most comfortable with. That look like us, that act like us, think like us and come from the same backgrounds as us. ... That’s doesn’t make us great. What makes us great is working with people that we don’t understand as well, and make us uncomfortable." Cohen went on to detail thoughts around turning off the negative noise & how talent alone is overrated. (link)
Troy boss McClain still wants his Trojans FB program to kick with Alabama or Auburn, "but they still haven't decided to play us." Points to the new $25M FB-only digs as the best in the Sun Belt & equal to any around the country. Overall: "We have a total of 16 different sports programs and 400 student athletes. We’ve (hit) new records for attendance in football, basketball and fundraising. The challenge now is how we continue that momentum." (link)
UConn beat writer Jacobs seemingly jumps the shark, asks if Huskies FB is so far gone it can't be saved. Jacobs walks it back a bit with connections between major sponsorship & media deals in Storrs & their connection to the gridiron, but also points to 2023 when Prez Herbst will be gone, potentially AD Benedict, too, and wonders if the new AAC TV pact will "provide adequate cover." Thesis: "I would urge those in charge at UConn and the state capital to start making serious study of the matter." (link)
Tickets: The SEC launches a secondary ticket exchange in agreement with Ticketmaster for the league's upcoming FB championship game between Georgia and Alabama. (link); Missouri State MBB ticket sales have gone from 1,338 last year to 1,509 this season. (link); TCU has sold out the 6,800-seat Schollmaier Arena for the season. (link)
The United States Olympic Committee is moving to revoke USA Gymnastics' standing as the official governing body for the sport. Yahoo's Wetzel explains & opines, "What exactly does that mean? It’s that the USOC no longer sees any way for USAG to competently operate in its current form so it might as well just cease to exist. This allows an entirely new organization – there needs to be a governing body after all – to be created. It should be a fresh start for a new era of gymnastics. […] Whatever form the new governing body holds going forward, and whatever commitment to transparency it embraces, it must work with the Olympic champions who carry such powerhouse voices. […] This doesn’t make up for the mistakes of the past. It does signify that the USOC has no more patience for half-attempts at reform or reconstruction. The sport of gymnastics deserves and demands a brand new, and far better, governing organization." (link)
Also Noticed: The Athletic's Landis pens on why/how, for the first time in nearly 100 years, Ohio State and Cincinnati will meet in MBB. Basically, new OSU HC Holtmann has a different scheduling & recruiting philosophy than former Bucks boss Matta. Ohio State AD Smith says he was "fine either way." (link); Fortnite and the NFL do a deal as video game players will be able to get NFL team outfits in the game's Battle Royale item shop starting Friday. Yea, this is gonna be big. (link); Former Florida student-athlete/Minnesota Viking DT Floyd intends to file a $180M lawsuit against Dr. James Andrews, the Andrews Institute for Orthopedic Surgery and others today in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for Orange County Florida. The suit alleges that Floyd was told he would undergo a minor arthroscopic knee surgery in September 2016, but instead underwent a "far more significant procedure" and suffered permanent nerve and muscle damage in his right knee as a result. (link); Now it looks like Amazon will split HQ2 between two cities, though which two remains a mystery with speculation centering on the DC & NYC areas. (link)
