The Benefits Of Enjoying Squash Soups

During the fall season, squash soups become more popular than ever. Nothing says fall quite like the flavor of a rich and creamy squash soup, and whether you choose to have yours warm or cool, it always seems to comfort you from the inside out. There are several different types of squash soups you may be familiar with, each with their own unique origins and benefits to those enjoying them. The 3 main types of squash soups are:

1. Pumpkin soup – Pumpkin soup is a type of soup that rests on Thanksgiving tables all over the United States, but not many know its history. First and foremost, a pumpkin is part of the squash family, and what we think of as pumpkin pie at the first Thanksgiving was more than likely actually pumpkin soup. Served not in a sweet crust but likely inside of a pumpkin, the savory soup was also probably not quite as sweet as we enjoy it today.

2. Squash soup – Squash soup isn’t just the traditional American Butternut Squash soup popular in the United States. Traditional squash soups actually originate from the Northern Africa regions, as well as a couple of Southern African areas like Mozambique and Namibia. Native Haitians enjoy a famous variety of squash soup that is known to be mildly spicy and combined with thin pasta, potato, beef, plantains, and vegetables called Soup Joumou. These types of squash soups are usually thinner than the butternut squash and pumpkin soups we enjoy most often in the United States.

3. Butternut Squash Soup – Butternut squash soup mixes the best of savory with the best of sweet. While it’s incredibly popular in America, butternut squash soup actually has its origins in New Zealand, where it’s better known as Butternut Pumpkin Soup. The sweet and nutty flavor of butternut squash soup is similar to the taste of pumpkin soup.

Health Benefits Of Squash Soups

Squash soups don’t just taste great, they’re actually pretty good for you, too. Squash are naturally rich in fiber, vitamin A, magnesium, vitamin C, and potassium, and when prepared into a soup these nutrients are not lost. When one enjoys a bowl of squash soup alongside a healthy protein-rich main course, they have for themselves a well-balanced meal that will leave them feeling comfortably full and satisfied. In cases of Haitian squash soup, the protein is put right in with the squash and vegetables, providing a single bowl of soup that has everything you need for a perfect meal.

The Health Benefits Of Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a type of winter squash that is well loved all throughout the autumn and winter seasons in the United States and around the world. In warm and cool soups, pumpkin is a comfort food that simply cannot be beaten. Not only does pumpkin soup feel good to eat, but it’s also good for you! A few of the amazing health benefits of pumpkin include:

  • Pumpkin is packed with crucial daily nutrients – Pumpkin gets a lot of credit for its abundance of Vitamin A and fiber, but that’s far from the most pumpkin has to offer. Also included in cooked pumpkin is 2 grams of protein, 19% of the daily recommended intake of Vitamin C, 16% of the daily recommended potassium, 11% of the daily recommended copper, 11% of the daily recommended manganese, 11% of daily Vitamin B2, 10% of the daily recommended Vitamin E, and 8% of the daily recommended intake of iron.
  • Low in calories – With protein, fiber, and plenty of nutrients, pumpkin is satisfying. However, pumpkin doesn’t leave you feeling guilty. Because pumpkin is 94% water, it’s also low in calories.
  • Fights free radicals – Free radicals can wreak havoc on the cells in your body by creating a state called oxidative stress. Pumpkin is full of antioxidants, which help to fight the free radicals known to contribute to inflammation, cell damage, and chronic illness.
  • Give your immune system a boost – With high Vitamins C and A content, pumpkin is a great friend to your immune system. Since pumpkin is most popular during the fall and winter, which also happens to coincide with cold and flu season, there is no better time to enjoy fresh warm pumpkin soups!
  • Pumpkin may aid heart health – Potassium, fiber, and vitamin C have all been linked to heart benefits, and pumpkin just so happens to be rich in all three. The antioxidants in pumpkin may also help to put a stop to LDL cholesterol oxidization, a process that is known to restrict blood vessels and increase risk of heart disease.
  • Pumpkin is easy to add to your diet – Pumpkin is something of a superfood, and it’s one that can be enjoyed in savory and sweet capacities alike. In soups alone, pumpkin can be eaten as a main course, an appetizer, or a side dish and alongside sweet, savory, salty, and spicy flavors as you see fit!
