Congregation Rodef Sholom
Receives Each Mind Matters Impact Award
Each Mind Matters presented the REAL Mental Health Initiative at Congregation Rodef Sholom with the first annual Each Mind Matters Impact Award, for the congregation’s dedication to end stigma in its community, and for its innovative methods to encourage positive conversation around mental health.

The REAL Mental Health Initiative set out to create a culture of empathy, support and acceptance of its community members who face mental health challenges, a mission started four years ago to end the stigma of mental illness and addiction in Marin County’s Jewish community and beyond.

“Judaism has always understood that physical and mental illness are equally deserving of healing, and we are all a key to that healing,” said Rabbi Stacy Friedman. “We need to make it safer for more people to come out from behind the shadows and find the support and care they need to continue to go on with their lives, both those living with mental illness and their family and friends who care for them.”

The award was co-presented by Assemblymember Marc Levine and Dr. Jei Africa, Director of Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.

“A community is only as strong as its members and Rodef Sholom has demonstrated the role a faith organization can have to raise awareness and change the conversation about mental health,” said Assemblymember Levine, who is also a member of the congregation. “I’m proud to continue the work to advocate for mental health policies that serve all Californians and improve services for vulnerable populations.”

Rodef Sholom carries out the REAL Mental Health Initiative through services that address mental health and stigma, an annual speaker series, community meetings, peer storytelling and other opportunities to communicate support to members of the community who may be facing a mental health challenge. A Tree for Life art installation allows participants to express feelings in a safe space and connects shared messages.

As part of their REAL Mental Health Initiative, Rodef Sholom has also developed a white paper discussing the best methods to destigmatize mental health treatment in faith communities. Check it out here: A Practical Guide to Implementing Mental Health Stigma Reduction Programs for Faith Communities.
