Mino-niigaanendmowin | Education and Life Skills

Program Community Update

The Mino-niigaanendmowin program is designed to help adults get the basic education and life skills they need in order to begin contributing to their community. The program can be accessed from Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek, Fort William First Nation, Animbiigoo Zaagi'igan Anishinaabek (Beardmore), Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek, Pic Mobert First Nation, and Thunder Bay. Our goal is to allow citizens of our member First Nations to achieve their goals without having to relocate.

Participants in the Mino-niigaanendmowin program complete 12 weeks of education, 2 weeks of life skills, and a 15-week work placement. The education portion of the program is provided by Seven Generations Educational Institute, building on an existing partnership between Seven Generations and Fort William First Nation. This has allowed us to have full-time high school teachers working at the sites, allowing participants to work towards real high school diplomas. Anyone can enroll with these teachers, even if they do not qualify for the full Mino-niigaanendmowin program.

This program would not be possible without the support of the communities. Each site operates out of donated space, and some communities have even provided living quarters for the teacher free of charge. Classes have drawn on community resources to provide cultural experiences for the participants. We wish to acknowledge Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek; the pilot program that ran in that community a few years ago continues to be the template for what we are doing now.

We are now accepting participants at all program sites. If you are interested in the program, contact the site facilitator for your area.

Nokiiwin's Justice Team: Update from Cheryl Suggashie
Get to know the Community Legal Worker

As the Community Legal Worker for Nokiiwin's Justice Team everything is picking up, and the team is keeping busy with their various roles and responsibilities. We continue to actively engage with incoming phone calls and walk-in clients who require assistance with access to justice. Once per month I participate in the "Satellite Court Run" in Nipigon and Marathon.  This has me canvassing Nokiiwin community members to ensure that they have proper court support and that they understand their rights if, and when, they are involved in the legal system. We have also been presenting Public Legal Education seminars (PLEs) in the communities, with the topics primarily being Wills & Estates and Child Welfare.  Other topics that can be covered include Criminal Law, human rights, Gladue Rights among others, but these are only done at the request of the communities.  Topics that are aimed at youth may also be covered, and these include bullying, what to do if you're stopped by the police, etc.  It is our objective to visit at least four communities per month (PLEs, pre-court day, post-court day).

Contact Cheryl Suggashie for more information regarding Nokiiwin's role in community legal work at

Nokiiwin's Justice Team: Update from Sandy Taddeo
Learn about the Support Services Coordinator Role

The Support Services Office held its Gagwaanisagendam Bami’ Maamigin Anishinaabekaa (“Gathering in Support of our People”) on Sept 24th and 25th at the Nor’Wester Inn and Conference Centre. Community delegates were tasked with developing a plan for the provision of services to victims of crime in their communities, and by all accounts, the event was a success. Delegates listened as subject matter experts and health and wellness providers delivered vital information and knowledge, and Indigenous speakers delivered powerful, informative, and entertaining messages that were pertinent to the objectives of the conference. My next step is to visit each community to further develop, with the help of community members, their ideas for a victim services program in their communities.

Contact Sandy Taddeo at
supportservices@nokiiwin.com for more information on support services offered by Nokiiwin's justice department.
Nokiiwin's Justice Team: Get to Know Jennifer J. McKenzie
Is your community ready to start using restorative justice circles and models?

Aaniin!
Booshoo! Jennifer McKenzie nindizhinikaaz. I am a member of Muskrat Dam First Nation, and I live in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I started as Restorative Justice Coordinator at Nokiiwin on August 20, 2018.  I am thankful for the previous work experience that led me here. I began my career in the legal field at Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation, most notably as a Restorative Justice Worker and a Gladue Report Writer. These positions have allowed me to gain experience in advocacy for Indigenous people who are facing the justice system and learning relevant criminal court processes. I had the pleasure of networking with and working alongside with First Nations community members and various justice personnel in the Thunder Bay region. I am proud and honoured to be working with you and your communities in your undertakings to have a voice in the mainstream justice system and most importantly the revitalization of Indigenous legal systems. I believe in restorative justice for the restoration and healing in a holistic manner for individuals and community for those who caused harm and for those impacted by harm. We seek to achieve balance to address the needs both of persons who caused damage and of victims in our access to the justice department.
