'Tis the Season: Budget-Friendly Party Ideas

The holiday season is just around the corner, and with that come parties, gifts, and planning. At almost every ECN event, we receive questions about trimming event budgets. Here are some tips to help you plan a memorable yet budget-friendly event for your department or group.

Party Themes:
  • White Elephant. This holiday activity is more for the fun that ensues during the gift swap than the actual gifts! Make it interesting by bringing theme gifts like DIY crafts, holiday ornaments, or edible gifts.
  • Cookie Decorating Bar. Provide different varieties of cookies, frosting options, and toppers for everyone to decorate and share. Also, decorating a gingerbread house together can be a team builder!
  • Holiday Photo Booth. Instead of photos with Santa, provide a photo booth or a backdrop with decorative elements that guests can use as props, like Santa hats, reindeer antlers, candy canes, or elf wear. Snap photos to take home as a memento of the event.
Catering:
  • Choose breakfast over lunch. Serving a holiday breakfast lets you fill your guests up with satisfying but inexpensive fare like muffins, egg bites, and fruit salad. As a bonus, it’s often easier to fit into your guests’ crowded December schedules.
  • Choose a non-meal time. Another alternative is to throw a mid-afternoon party with appetizers.  A midday meal is usually cheaper than a dinner, and there is no expectation for a seated meal with all the table trimmings and alcohol. Add a cranberry spritzer punch instead of sodas and your event is golden!
  • Just Have Desserts. Dessert is everyone’s favorite part of the meal, so why not skip straight to it? Add a few urns of coffee (don’t forget the decaf!) for an inexpensive yet warm beverage.
Service Projects and Giving Back:

Local service agencies can always use a hand over the holidays. You can even combine your parties and service projects by taking your team to visit the location. Check out sites like Hands On Atlanta to see where your department can make a positive impact in our community. Local schools or places of worship also have special needs at this time of year.
