Field Museum Women in Science

E-Newsletter, Fall Edition

Hello and welcome to the illustrious Field Museum Women in Science (FMWIS) newsletter!
New and Noteworthy
  • Travel Back to the World's Fair in Our Collection - This year the museum celebrates 125 years since our extensive collection began! We started our collection with objects from the World’s Fair 125 years ago, and now it’s grown to include nearly 40 million objects and specimens. Plus, our scientists are still traveling around the world, constantly learning more about life on Earth. These original collections are still important as we study and learn from them through modern research.

Inspiring Quote

"Science is not a boy's game, it's not a girl's game. It's everyone's game. It's about where we are and where we're going." - Nichelle Nichols, former NASA Ambassador and actress

Viridiana Lopez Pedraza
2015 Field Museum Women in Science Intern

Where are you now? Tell us what you've been up to since completing your Field Museum Women in Science internship.
Since the completion of my internship at the Field Museum WIS, I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science, with high honors, at Chicago State University (CSU). I am currently a dental hygiene student at Malcolm X College and will be a Registered Dental Hygienist by Summer of 2019.

Where are your plans for the future?
My future plan is to pursue a Masters in Public Health. My long-term goals are to support all programs, institutions, and non-profit organizations that seek to provide access to oral healthcare for underserved populations, and promote higher education equity at the local, national, and global level.

How did your Field Museum Women in Science Internship impact you?
The Field Museum WIS Internship had a positive impact on me. It allowed me to apply the chemistry skills I learned at CSU. In addition, it gave me the opportunity to learn the clear and staining technique used to prepare fish specimen.

What advice would you give to women interested in  pursuing an education/career in STEM fields?
My advice for women interested in an education or career in STEM fields would be to find a STEM mentor on campus, network, and definitely apply to STEM internships. Working in a lab and/or assisting a professor with his/her research allows you to apply all that is learned in the classroom.

What are you most looking forward to in the next year?
In the next year, I look forward to becoming a Registered Dental Hygienist in the state of Illinois.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
If I could be an animal, I would be a shark. I would never have to worry about losing my teeth.

As we wish our 2018 Women in Science interns best of luck on their future endeavors, here are some inspiring stories of young women in science!
