"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old..."

This Sunday, we mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.

We will remember with gratitude men and women who served on the front lines, and those who waited and served at home. We will mourn those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, trusting that others would carry the torch after them, and remember those who returned damaged in mind, body and spirit. We will lament that war is not something long ago and far away, but something that is ongoing, and that we continue to welcome home veterans from contemporary conflicts.

The Rev. Dr. Susanne Abbuhl, our pastoral care minister, will be leading worship this Sunday at 10:00 am, to commemorate this significant anniversary. She will be reflecting on Ezra 1:1-4 and "The Way of Peace".

Worship will also include the Act of Remembrance, including the Last Post, Two minutes of Silence, and the Reveille. The worship choir will offer special music, including a sung version of the poem, "In Flanders Fields", by John McCrae (solo by Alan Houliston).

If are you able, you are also welcome to join in worship at the Oak Bay Cenotaph in Uplands Park, for a service of commemoration of Remembrance Day. This service will include calling the Roll of Honour, reading the names of those who died in WWI from Oak Bay. Rev. Michelle will be offering leadership at this service, which begins at 10:50 am promptly.

However and wherever we remember, may we commit ourselves anew, to be followers of the Prince of Peace.

~ Rev. Michelle and Rev. Susanne

The Bells of Peace

Bells call us to wake, to pray, to work, to arms, to feast, and in times of crisis, to come together. On November 11, 1918, the ringing of church bells erupted spontaneously across Europe, as an outpouring of relief that four long and brutal years of war had come to an end.

This Sunday at sunset, the sound of church bells will ring out in communities across Canada, marking the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War, with the ringing of 100 bells.

Bells will also ring at sunset at Parliament Hill, city halls, military bases, naval vessels and ceremonies across the country.

For more information, see The Bells of Peace:

If you would like to join in ringing the 100 bells at sunset (4:39 pm), please meet Rev. MIchelle in the church sanctuary at 4:20 pm.

This Week in Our Children and Youth Ministries...

Our age-specific children and youth Sunday ministries are offered this Sunday! We gather at 10am for prayer, song, sacred story, reflection and response (for about 20 minutes), before being invited to move to separate places and ways of being together.

Preschool Church will be led by Susanne and Frances, Children's Church will be led by Pam and Reyna, and Youth will remain in worship, as Zach and most of the youth are at the Evolve Conference.

More details about our fab children and youth ministry are here. Check the church calendar for our youth events, and check out our general youth group page here.
