This Sunday, we mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.
We will remember with gratitude men and women who served on the front lines, and those who waited and served at home. We will mourn those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, trusting that others would carry the torch after them, and remember those who returned damaged in mind, body and spirit. We will lament that war is not something long ago and far away, but something that is ongoing, and that we continue to welcome home veterans from contemporary conflicts.
The Rev. Dr. Susanne Abbuhl, our pastoral care minister, will be leading worship this Sunday at 10:00 am, to commemorate this significant anniversary. She will be reflecting on Ezra 1:1-4 and "The Way of Peace".
Worship will also include the Act of Remembrance, including the Last Post, Two minutes of Silence, and the Reveille. The worship choir will offer special music, including a sung version of the poem, "In Flanders Fields", by John McCrae (solo by Alan Houliston).
If are you able, you are also welcome to join in worship at the Oak Bay Cenotaph in Uplands Park, for a service of commemoration of Remembrance Day. This service will include calling the Roll of Honour, reading the names of those who died in WWI from Oak Bay. Rev. Michelle will be offering leadership at this service, which begins at 10:50 am promptly.
However and wherever we remember, may we commit ourselves anew, to be followers of the Prince of Peace.
