Echo Park News & Notes

It appears that Celaya Bakery, one of the neighborhood's last remaining panaderias, has closed for good. A banner hanging outside the shuttered storefront at 1630 Sunset says that Tamales Alberto, which has two other outlets in the neighborhood, is moving into the space.

We have not been able to find out why Celaya closed, following nearly 50 years of selling pan dulce and other Mexican baked goods. But an Instagram post said the business shut down on Oct. 28. "Today we gathered to talk about memories we have of this place, walk through the building, and say goodbye one last time. It wasn’t easy to say bye to my second home. But it made me realize the hard work and sacrifice my grandparents, aunts, and parents did to provide for our family with this special bakery that served tamales and pan dulce."

A developer has applied for nine liquor licenses for the new retail development taking shape in the old A1 Grocery on Sunset near Portia. Champion Real Estate Company bought the property for $9.5 million, and had planned to open Brick Works Echo Park by the end of the year. But that clearly is not going to happen, since work remains in the very early stages.

An arson unit was deployed to the site of a hillside brush fire that burned about an acre on the western edge of Elysian Park, The Eastsider said. Firefighters took about half an hour to knock down the blaze near Park Drive last week. There were no reports of structure damage or injuries. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, said the LAFD.

Fire damaged a vacant house in the 900 block of Everett Street on Saturday night, The Eastsider reported. The L.A. Fire Department said the one-story, boarded up house was fully involved in flames when fire crews showed up. It took about 45 minutes to put out the fire, which was reported at 11:34 pm. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze has not been determined.

A home made of logs is up for sale for $1,550,000, Redfin reports. The 3-bedroom "lodge-style" house on Vestal Avenue is "constructed of solid logs made from Idaho Lodgepole pine." Even the indoor shots show a largely wooden interior, with relatively little drywall.

Yes, that was Shia LaBeouf at Echo Park Lake. The actor and girlfriend, singer FKA Twigs, were spotted by paparazzi as the couple sat at the boathouse cafe and wandered around the lake.

Anyone remember the French Hand Laundry on Echo Park Avenue? Here's an old photo of the cleaners and its great sign (and some classic tagging) hanging from the side of the narrow Art-Deco style building at Echo Park Avenue and Fairbanks Place (Behind Echo Park Donut).
