SMALL GRANTS FOR GROUPS
Applications are still open for small groups to hold events that raise awareness and share their unique knowledge and skills.  Funding availability is limited, with applications to be processed as they are received until all funds are committed.

The Small Grants for Groups project, supported by Catchment Action NSW supports events such as field days, workshops, training and education.  These events should contribute to improving and protecting natural resources in the Central Tablelands Local Land Services area.  Examples include improving native vegetation, planting for habitat and connectivity, stream management and restoration of threatened species.

Funding of up to a maximum value of $500 (ex. GST) is available to incorporated groups located in the Central Tablelands LLS region.

NATIONAL LANDCARE PROGRAM FUNDING NOW EXTENDED
You may remember our exciting announcement last month that the Central Tablelands Local Land Services is one of 47 organisations across Australia selected to deliver funding through the Australian Government’s Regional Land Partnerships under the $450 million National Landcare Program (NLP).

We now know funding for our on-ground sustainable agriculture and environment projects in regional communities will continue after 2019 until 2022.  Projects will provide support to farmers in the region with farm management information and protection of natural resources.

As part of the NLP Services Agreement, a Regional Agricultural Landcare Facilitator will act as a conduit between landholders and industry to share information and opportunities. The Facilitator will develop and support key relationships and partnerships within the community to enable long term action and positive change in our local natural capital.

PLAN AHEAD AND BOOK SEED EARLY FOR 2019.
Farmers are being warned of a potential shortage of seed supplies.  Phil Cranney our Senior Land Services Officer is urging farmers to book in now so they can plant fodder crops in 2019.  Read his advice here.

WOULD YOU LIKE A HEALTH REPORT ON YOUR BREEDING STOCK?

  • Do you know the pestivirus status of your heifers? Do you need to vaccinate for pestivirus?
  • Could your stock be exposed to Leptospirosis?
  • Could Ovine Brucellosis be having an impact on your lambing rates?
  • Is it time to supplement with Selenium, treat for liver fluke or drench your stock?

Central Tablelands LLS is looking for cattle and sheep properties willing to have stock tested for a variety of diseases, mineral imbalances and internal parasites in order to optimise the health of their breeding stock and maximise production.

We will also screen herds for exposure to Q fever and other infectious diseases. A short survey about your farm management practices will help us to gather important information to help interpret the test results and gain insight into our local producer’s livestock management.

This project has animal ethics approval from the DPI Orange Animal Ethics Committee.  All information gathered will be kept confidential.  It will be used to help to raise awareness of common livestock health issues and their implications for human and animal health. This testing will generate data to inform discussions on the prevention, management and treatment of local livestock and the prevention of zoonotic disease. No recent local information is available on the distribution of these diseases.

Please call Lucienne Downs District Veterinarian with Central Tablelands Local Land Services on 0417043966 if you would like more information about participating.
There will be no cost for participation. Conditions apply.

IS CANOLA HAY SAFE TO FEED STOCK?
With plenty of canola crop hay currently on the market, Central Tablelands Local Land Services has been fielding queries about whether it’s a useful feed for livestock.

Brett Littler our Senior Land Services Officer offers his advice here.

$16.9 MILLION FOR SMART FRUIT FLY MANAGEMENT

Australian fruit and vegetable growers will be given a new edge in the fight against fruit fly, with new high-tech systems giving early warnings of fly movements.

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said a $16.9 million dollar package would assure our trading partners when produce comes from a fruit-fly free area.

BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR BARBERS POLE THIS SUMMER
It is about this time of the year that we all like to relax and enjoy the holiday break. But there is a little eager beaver doing the opposite, working harder than ever. Barbers Pole, the predominant summer parasite, can explode in numbers over a very short period of time. So pay close attention to your worm egg counts and a summer drench if needed. Remember it is necessary to get the larval differentiation test done as well as the egg count to make sure you know what worms you are dealing with. Internal parasite monitoring over the last couple of months would indicate a build-up and favourable season for Barbers Pole.

Barbers pole have a big impact on production so if you are seeing clinical signs such as pale gums and eye lids, lethargy plus a bottle jaw. Barbers Pole may be the culprit and the effects on production are already starting to occur. So make sure that those worm egg counts are done early enough that you have time to make an accurate diagnosis and undertake a strategic drench. It is cheaper to prevent an issue than suffer the cost of a production loss and deaths.

A good reference source is http://www.wormboss.com.au. Or speak to one of your Local Land Services District Veterinarians. Worm egg count test kits can be obtained from any Central Tablelands Local Land Services office.

SILVERLEAF NIGHTSHADE MANAGEMENT
DPI has released  a new Silverleaf nightshade best practice management manual

CHANGES TO PESTICIDES REGULATION
If you use pesticides as part of your work you should be aware there have been some changes to training and licensing requirements in NSW. From 1 July 2018 individuals who spray weeds for fee or reward must hold a ground applicator licence. If you engage or contract a ground applicator it is your responsibility to ensure they hold the required licence. Click here for full info.

REQUIREMENTS WHEN BUYING FODDER FROM INTERSTATE
Fodder imported from other parts of NSW and interstate can introduce new and existing pests, diseases, weeds and contaminants to your property. Both vendors and purchasers who sell, purchase and transport fodder have obligations to minimise the impact and risk of weeds and pests in NSW. Click here to see the requirements for the entry of fodder into NSW.

DROUGHT SUPPORT
Support is available under the NSW Emergency Drought Relief Package. Applications for transport subsidies for feed, water and livestock can be filled out online via the Rural Assistance Authority, or if you need help accessing the online forms, or a paper copy, please visit your closest Local Land Services office for assistance. LAND AND LIVESTOCK SESSIONS!
LEARN NEW THINGS, REFRESH YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR JUST COME AND SAY HELLO!

You're a diverse bunch on the Central Tablelands and we want to connect with all of you.

For those landholders that live or work off-farm or are new to owning land there may be an added challenge to ensuring you’re meeting the demands of managing a property. Weeds, livestock health, buying and selling livestock, pest animals and pasture management are just are handful of topics that landholders are often considering on a regular basis.

Local Land Services understands the demands of managing a property so we have designed an information session that will enable you to learn new things or refresh your knowledge. We will cover a little bit of everything including livestock management, natural resources and the principles of biosecurity. These information sessions are focused on catering for all landholders however, if you are new to owning land, or want to learn more about a range of agriculture areas then this is for you.

When: Thursday the 20th of December
Where: Bathurst Harness Racing Club.
Time: 6pm

Finger food, tea and coffee will provided as well as a plenty of Christmas spirit.

For more information go to our website or email Kate McCarthy at kate.mccarthy@lls.nsw.gov.au.

ARE YOU TIRED OF YOUR IRRIGATION GETTING CLOGGED UP?
Why not invest in a pump screen?  You'll improve downtime and help save a lot of native fish as well.  Millions of fish are lost from rivers every year. They’re sucked into pumps and diverted into channels.

Our 'Screens in Streams' project is working to raise awareness of irrigation screens which can stop both fish and debris from entering pumps and diversions.

Here are some benefits for installing screening pumps and diversions with self-cleaning screens:

  1. Make water delivery more efficient
  2. Save farmers time and money in maintenance
  3. Boost rural economies through production
  4. Reduce fish losses by 90%

These benefits have been proven in the U.S., where over 10,000 screens have been installed, and in experiments here in Australia. The screens work. The next step is to scale up in Australia – Our lowest estimate is 1.3 million native fish per year in NSW are lost through irrigation, but, it could easily be hundreds of times that.

If you're thinking of getting a screen contact Casey Proctor for more information - casey.proctor@lls.nsw.gov.au

NSW BIOSECURITY SYMPOSIUM
Last month members of Central Tablelands Local Land Services biosecurity teams, representatives from our Regional Pest Animal Committee and community based pest co-ordinators attended the 2018 NSW Vertebrate Pest Management Symposium in Coffs Harbour.

The symposium was host to 200 attendees representing both government and non-government organisations, all with an interest and stake in effective biosecurity.

This forum brought those who manage pests, researchers and policy makers together to discuss impacts, best practise methods, monitoring techniques, existing and new controls.  A great opportunity to ensure our farmers are provided with current and effective biosecurity advice and programs.

The forum represented a good opportunity for Central Tablelands Local Land Services teams to see and hear about these latest developments and ideas and be able to discuss issues with other subject matter experts.

More information about the Symposium, including a full run down of speakers and presentations can be found here.

THE 2018 REGIONAL WELLBEING SURVEY IS NOW OPEN – PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING PART!
The Regional Wellbeing Survey’s mission is to support research that improves the wellbeing and quality of life of people living in rural and regional Australia. Your participation in the survey makes a difference, as it means we can produce data communities can use to inform their planning and decision making, as well as organisations ranging from the National Farmers Federation to  local government authorities (check out the reports and data on our website). This year we have a special section asking about drought, where we ask people who are experiencing drought (or have in the past) about what types of support were most useful, and ask everyone else their views about drought support. This will be used to produce a special report on supporting rural communities through drought.

All survey participants aged 18 or over can enter the draw to win one of 16 prizes worth a total of $7,000. Winners will have their choice of a Flight Centre, Coles-Myer, WISH or Bunnings gift card, to the following value: First prize: $2,000; Second prize: $1,000; third to eighth prize: $500; 10 runner-up prizes of $100.
The survey is voluntary, confidential and anonymous, and closes on 14 December 2018, at midnight.
Do the survey online at www.regionalwellbeing.org.au
