Take a Moment to Show Gratitude
Thanksgiving is coming and it's a great time to bring the kids together to talk about what they're thankful for. Doing it as a family craft will make it fun and can bring out some surprising responses from your students. All you need is construction paper, scissors, glue, and markers.
Cut out the pieces of construction paper and glue them together to create a turkey, similar to the ones seen below.
Once dry, give everyone a pen and start writing what you're thankful for on the turkey feathers. If you run out, add more! If your student needs help, you can prompt with questions like:
- Who are you thankful for?
- What things are you thankful for?
- What traditions are you thankful for?
Want to make the gratitude last? Have your child write a thankful note each day and put it in a jar. You can read it at Thanksgiving (or another holiday event)!

Things to Ask at Your
Parent-Teacher Conference
Once your child starts school, he/she will spend nearly as many waking hours with their teachers and peers as they will at home. Parent-teacher conferences are an opportunity to team up with teachers to help make your child's school year successful and memorable.
Here are a few things to think about before your conversation with your child's teacher.
- What should my child learn this year? Ask the teacher what skills and knowledge your child will be expected to master by the end of the school year.
- What are my child's strengths and weaknesses?
- How is my child's class behavior?
- What type of learner is my child?
- How much time should he/she spend on homework?
- How do you evaluate your students? Is work graded on completion or accuracy? Do you grade class participation?
- Is my child working up to his/her ability?
- How is my child doing socially?
- How can I help?
- May I tell you about what's going on at home? How your child feels can impact his/her performance. Have there been recent changes? Situations like illness, divorce or a new baby may affect your child's school experience, so inform your child's teacher of such circumstances.
Regardless of what was discussed during the conference, try to end on a positive note. You may not always agree with your child's teacher, but working together to solve issues should unite you both with a common interest. Remember, you both have the same goal: to make this a successful school year for your child!

Lakeshore Library Wishlist
Support Reading, Learning, Building and Creating in the Lakeshore Library!
Greetings from Ms. Lauren in the library. I wanted to let you all know about the amazing things your students are doing in the library, and some support that we need to be even more awesome!
We have created an Amazon Wish List that will help support our students:
|
|
Click above or visit http://a.co/iemkQMw to support our library.
Many of the books on the wish list are high interest books that we can't purchase from our library vendor, or books that have been requested by students or teachers that we’d love as soon as possible. The library only has a one-time order through the district that usually arrives in late January, but there are so many new books we’d love to read before that! Also, to comply with library durability standards, all books must be in hardcover or library binding format. Thanks in advance for your support!
